    ‘Village Ghetto Land’ with obie strings is simply gorgeous. OB8 strings are heart-meltingly beautiful! Thank you Ujiie and musictrackjp for all the great videos and great translations.

    This sounds so good. It has the sound I hear in my head when I think of a polyphonic synthesizer.

    This synth is one the must-have ingredients of 'Minneapolis sound'. If you want to mimic Jam/Lewis, the Time, or even the Purple One, you gots to get one of these...

      Infidel14? Very true. But who has a couple grand to drop on one of these? :/ Even reproductions of old Oberheim synths cost a lot.

    When I hear or see an OB-8 I think of Prince and his early 80's records. He loved this synth!

    You can always tell the ultimate tonal quality of an analog synth by the tone of it's raw, unfiltered oscillators and it's filter. Every synth can sound alike, but not the same. For example, listen to the raw oscillators of an old ARP Odyssey; they're clear and aggressive in a very musical way. No matter how you filter, modulate or otherwise modify the sound, you can always tell it's an ARP. The Minimoog is different in the it's raw waveforms sound much more weighty in the low end, due largely to them being overdriven by 15db (design error - happy accident) so if you want more clarity, you have to turn them down a bit in the mixer so they're not being driven as hard.
    NOW!
    When you talk about polyphonic synthesizers, it's more difficult to identify in a mix because... well.... chords! Still, I find that the Oberheim OB-X oscillators are some of the sharpest around! Unlike the ARP, where the VCO's sound aggressive, the Oberheim is just REALLY clear on the top end! The OB-X was probably the best sounding in my opinion, but the Xa had a more aggressive sound; almost like there was a tad of distortion on them... the OB-8 is the cleanest and most reliable, and contrary to popular belief, I think it sounds just as good as it's predecessors, just more polished and more features!
    The filter is also legendary, especially on the OB-X. It's a 2-pole discrete design and has a very "choir" -like resonance.... it literally sings in the high levels........
    Oh wait, I'm rambling now.....

    • @catboyzee
      @catboyzee 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed. One thing I've noticed about polyphonic analog synths by Obie, ARP, Sequential, etc., is that the oscillators almost seem to 'move' on their own. The sound is almost chorus-like, not in an out-of-phase way, but in a fat sounding way. I have yet to hear a digital modeling analog synth or even a plug-in that comes close.

    • @AdamBorseti
      @AdamBorseti 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      catboyzee That's because the oscillators are free-running and don't restart with each key press. This, and each oscillator is drifting in and out of tune independently. It's a beautiful thing, and some soft-synths actually do emulate this. SonicProject's OP-X Pro II does this to great effect, of course one issue with this plug in is that VCO 2 doesn't drift independently from VCO 1

    • @catboyzee
      @catboyzee 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, so that's how it works. Hope folks in the soft synth/digital keyboard market are able to 'crack the code' in our lifetime. Thanks for the insight BTW.

    • @catboyzee
      @catboyzee 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And for the record, I like the sound of the OB-8 more than other polysynths of the era; close second would probably be the Prophet-5.

    • @tritonrecordings
      @tritonrecordings 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. Oberheim makes the absolute best sounding polysynths to my ear. There's a sharpness to them, yet so delicate. Next synth on my list is a Matrix 6 (since I can't afford an OB8 or Xa) but when I first played an OBZa, I almost choked up...saw sawtooth pad with the filter...ugh!!!

    You know what's funny? I've probably watched over a hundred of these videos...and they all sound spectacular! I've come to the conclusion that the only reason they all sound so good is the person playing them. I can guarantee you that if I were to have the same instrument in front of me, chopsticks would sound like a cow hiccuping!

    • @AdamBorseti

      That there is your typical OB pad sound, using the 4-pole filter and smeared with a very lush sounding chorus effect.

    What is that piece of (19" rack mount) outboard gear sitting on top of the OB-8? I don't speak a word of this gentleman's language but I think I heard him say the smaller one OFF the synth was a TC chorus. I'd like to know what the OTHER box is.

    IMO the added chorus is a shame. Sure, it sounds great and builds on the famous OB sound. Yet, it kinda limits or even ruins the ability to demonstrate other types of sounds that these synths can also do to great effect.

      What's the problem? The effects were just for a richer experience of the sound that's produced by the synthesizer.
      And don't comment on the japanese people's way of saying the l's, that was just cynical of your part.
