    I had him back when I was in 7th grade (I'm a sophomore in college now) and he is truly a funny and cool guy. I remember watching this video and all the funny jokes he said in it. We even had a "Shane day" where we all got to come to school dressed as cowboys/cowgirls. I can't believe it only been six years it seemed so much longer than that! Be safe Mr. K :)

  • @hickok45
    @hickok45  12 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    @robbanzana, With a bolt gun you can fire a very hot pointed bullet (no danger of magazine detonation with bullets end to end), and the lever itself creates some problems with shooting prone.

  • @hickok45
    @hickok45  14 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    @farmerboy245 , You can't beat the Marlin 1894 - great gun. The Cowboy models are more expensive, so you have to decide whether you want the octagonal barrel and such. I guess they make the .45 Colt in the non-cowboy models, not sure.
    Lots of choices for the revolvers - depends on whether you wnat a Colt or Colt clone or something a little less authentic but built stronger, such as the Ruger. All are fun to shoot.

  • @hickok45
    @hickok45  12 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I did notice, though, that Kevin Costner did manage to get about 9 shots out of his Colt SAA when he was fanning it. He must have been using a model I'm just not familiar with! I'll have to dig through my Colt history books and find out more about that high-capacity model. :-)

    Wild Bill Hickok used a pair of cap n ball revolvers. In fact, up to the late 1800's cap n ball were very common and it was not till around 1880 before the classic Colt everyone sees in the movies became popular. The Remington 1858 type were popular because you could get spare cylinders and easily swap out a spent one with a freshly loaded one. You see this at the end of a Clint Eastwood movie (Pale Rider) where he removes a spent cylinder, and installs a freshly loaded one into his revolver and then shoots that guy at the end of the movie. I have SA's in .45 Colt, but I still love my 1858's and shoot them a lot.

    Winchester 30-30 was the first rifle I ever shot and hunted with after passing my hunters safety course (outside of a few shots on a 22lr). It is the rifle I got my first deer with, the first ever gun I bought with my own money, and now I still have a Marlin 30-30 lever-action and it is my hunting rifle. I coulda went 308, but i just go way back with the 30-30 lever. Also Hornady makes that ammo I'm not going to try and spell where they make the Spitzer type bullets with the polymer tip which is nice. Where I live in the mountains of PA, no realistic shot that I'm likely ever going to take deer hunting is going to be more than 200 yards tops, which those Hornady rounds are perfectly capable of. I threw a little 4-12 scope on it and a nice sling, and it maneuvers nice, lightweight, and effective (plus lever-action is fun and something you can get fast with after enough practice). To touch on something you mentioned in the video, I've always loaded rounds thru the loading gate by leaving the round 1/3 of the way out and use the next round to keep pushing them in, especially when the gun is new and might have a stiff loading gate. I'm good on playing finger-pinch peekaboo with every round I load haha. Good stuff though.

    Excellent as always. Djquack12, when loading your 3030. There is a bullet catch just past the loading gate. If you bullet is is being pushed back behind the gate, the catch is broken or you not pushing it far enough past the loading gate.

    Love your videos, live in Tx this is taught to us all in the 7th Grade. God bless Texas!! They did make a conversion for the old Confederate and Us Navy cap and ball pistols also for the folks that couldnt afford a new Colt or Remington. Cowboy wages in the 1870's were about 30 bucks a month, if you worked for a big outfit. I think the cost of a new Colt was about $35. That being said you had to really save to get one. Most folks, cowboys included carried hand me downs, if they had one at all. Most of those had to save up for holsters, while most carried them on their saddles or in their belts. Most cowboys were lucky to have a rifle. Hell some were lucky to have shoes. lol The movies make it look a lot cooler than it was! Again i do love your videos.

    Hickok45, I've watched, learned and enjoyed so many of your videos and it would be hard to say which would be my favorite but this one on Guns of the West surely makes the short list. Cowboy guns are just so cool. I got a real good chuckle when you were explaining your outfit and then proceeded to pull out your cell phone and media player. Oh life is good!

    Mister Hickok. You are by far the best person on firearms on this TH-cam channel I have seen. You know how to explain your stuff you know how to handle your stuff and you are very very accurate on your shots. by the way do you know where I can find a 10 gauge shotgun or 10 gauge coach gun in Texas or Colorado. From Bryan Smith a huge western eastern fan

    There will be problems with human / gun freedoms with ANY administration if gun owners don't start putting their money where their mouths are. Anybody who is not a member of a gun rights organization is just "riding in the wheelbarrow," while the rest of us push it.

    Another western where a shotgun was fired with a ton black powder smoke was towards the end of one of my favorites, The Sacketts, when Ben Johnson shoots Paul Koslo with a coach gun, using both barrels, and there was a ton of smoke from the gun

    Indeed ! he's an outstanding shooter and he has such a great sense of humor! His videos are so fun to watch, and as a shooter i was able to learn a lot from watching him. Not to mention his awesome history lessons about the guns he's shooting. I kinda look up to him and respect him as a fatherly figure.

    Clint's gun in that movie is actually an 1851 Navy, but it was also a cap and ball revolver. For the movies they use a replica cylinder designed to look like the original but which can take blank cartridges.
