Luwak coffee's origin story is actually kinda tragedy, it starts at the Dutch colonization era where people are forced to do coffee farm labour for free and prohibited to enjoy the coffee. To outsmart the colonizers, people starts to take the coffee beans eaten by the civet.
if I were there probably I would've said the same thing as Kiki just as a sign/form of respect to others, I mean I won't be talking about colonizers and colonization stuffs right in front of the descendants of colonizers itself, Kiki is so smart to choose "I'm not prepared for this story", it shows our Indonesian manner in front of people in real-life event/talkshow.
But yea, the colonization story behind Luwak white coffee is so pathetic and tragic, if only our ancestors knew that these coffee would later highly valued in the future, they'll probably gonna be proud of their invention, rest in peace for all of our tortured ancestors.

FYI, I heard the one who branded the coffee to be so expensive is the dutch, though. So after knowing rumor about the taste of civet coffee, the Dutch took advantages of it, sell it, and labeled it as the mosr expensive coffee we know today.

a little bit correction, for Padang's restaurant that served the food directly to the table, it's not the customer who keep track of what they ate, the server know exactly which food you ate, so basically when the server served the food to the table, they know all the portions for each food they've served, for example, among all of the foods they've served, there are a plate of rendang with 4 pieces of meats in it and a plate of fried chicken with 2 pieces of chicken in it, you ate 2 pieces of rendang and all of the chicken, and when it's time to pay, the server look at all of the food and find which food that have been missing, since they know the exact portions for each food, they know that 2 pieces of rendang are gone and all of the chicken are gone, so you can't lie, because they know
no need for correction tho. some of padang's restaurant also ask the customer what they eat. so its not entirely wrong.

Luwak coffee supposed to be good because the chivets live freely, eat according their natural diet requirement and only take the best coffee beans, when they feel like taking the beans. We're supposed to just collect their droppings instead of forcing them on coffee-bean-only intake. Thus, the quality of both Kopi Luwak and the chivets dropped.
Let's stop glorifying Kopi Luwak for its best taste or highest price. There are many coffee origins in Indonesia alone and even more worldwide that surpass the taste of Kopi Luwak.
the really expensive one is actually the one they found in the wild like how searching for truffle almost, the one they cage usually didn't ferment for long and smells bad almost like instant coffee instead of artisan coffee. I think what we can hope to happen is a balance where the civets can lives in a big field/forrest while eating freely and the farmer occasionally take the bean instead because luwak similar to cat can be "trained" to poop in specific places.
@@yuugael4010 I can confidently say the statement about the expensive ones found in the wild is not generally valid. Most of those farmers already have buyers with predetermined price.
In addition, the taste of coffee does not solely depend on the origin. The washing, fermentation, roasting, mixing, grinding and making process determine the final taste too.
Hear, hear! Keep the chivets roaming free in their habitats. I've tasted Luwak Coffee before and meh...there are still plenty of coffee variants from Indonesia that I found the taste & price are more sensible. 😬
True, just tried the coffee yesterday, and I'd say while the taste is great, but I think it's not worth the abuse these civets are getting into. Let them be free and also if the coffee is getting expensive because of the rarity, then we can just buy any other options.

The huge flower mentioned here should've been Rafflesia Arnoldi not Amorphophallus Titanum (or corpse flower) one. Raflessia Arnoldi can grow to be 3 feet across and weigh up to 15 pounds.
And for alcohol, actually some province in Indonesia produce their own alcohol such as Tuak from North Sumatera, Arak Bali from Bali, etc. Some of Indonesians also drink alcohol but not openly like other countries. They used to drink in their home or on private parties or clubs.

also you can't compare rendang served on another countries with the one served in indonesia. even rendang that isn't cooked by Padang's people will taste kinda different. the original one is sooo tasty
Sorry, but personally I think it's rude to make fun or undermine someone else's local food like "it's probably not that tasty" or "the news must be biased" and so on when you haven't even try it. I don't mind the guy who state their honest opinion that they don't like it after they tried the food. It just mean that it just doesn't suit his pallatte. It's not the indonesian's fault their cuisine get selected as number 1 instead of yours. I get that it's a joke and I probably overreact but I just wanna say that. Thank you for reading my opinion. As an Indonesian, I was wondering about which or what specific Nasi Goreng type they were using as a measure? Because since its a common national dish, it varies a lot from one another. To speak/express with a brutal honesty; Its like there's a chance that a Nasi Goreng made by a random guy at home, would maybe be of better taste from the one made by a professional chef in a modern fancy hotel/restaurant.
Lol yeah I can certify that the street food nasi goreng tend to taste much better than the upscale restaurants that claim to have nasi goreng signature dishes

Oya, cerita sedikit tentang kopi luwak, silahkan dikoreksi kalau salah, pernah lihat dokumenter nya, jadi asal mula nya kopi luwak, itu ketika para pekerja Indonesia, yang bekerja di perkebunan kopi milik orang asing, tidak boleh meminum atau mengambil buah yang layak jual atau ekspor, akhirnya para pekerja atau warga itu, memunguti biji-biji (buah) kopi yang jatuh disekitar perkebunan, nah, ketika memunguti itu, mereka juga mendapat biji kopi yang berasal dari kotoran luwak, eh ternyata, rasanya bagi beberapa orang lebih enak dari biji kopi yang di prores biasanya. Selain karena terfermentSi /teroleh melewati proses pencernaan si luwak, buah kopi yang dimakan sama si luwak juga buah kopi pilihan, karena luwak tidak sembarang makan buah kopi. Biasanya kalau berkesempatan melihat langsung ke proses pembuatan /kandang luwak , luwak disajikan lumayan banyak buah kopi dan itu ga semua dia makan . Waullahu'alam
(Luwak) dead in the cage is just trade competition (100% hoax), it's a photo of illegal (luwak) hunters from the wild or the wrong way to produce (luwak) coffee. breeders/farmers (luwak) the system is already integrated with coffee plantations, not locked up like that. because (luwak) with their sense of smell, they can choose the best quality directly from the coffee tree.

Drinking culture in Indonesia is not a thing but there are many local alcoholic drinks.
For beer as an example there is Bintang, Angker and Bali Hai.
For local alcoholic drinks we have our own wine and each region has some form of alcohol from coconuts, sugarcane or rice. Example Bali has Arak is made from either with coconuts or rice.

Rendang is definitely freaking delicious ok and I didn't know it was an Indonesian food . I'm used to Japanese food which is sweet and Korean food which has a little kick of spice and sweet at the same time. But Indian curry and Thai food are my favorites, they touch so much nerves in my brain I didn't know existed 😆 They have really wide range of flavors. And Rendang , yes it's not an Indian or a Thai cuisine but it definitely has resemblance to those kinds of flavor. Rendang has this savory and spicy taste you couldn't forget , strong but addictive . They make your taste buds dance.

There's Indonesian beer called Bintang and it's really good. That's not true that we doesn't have drink culture. Maybe mr. Kiki say it because most people know including himself that majority of Indonesia is muslim. But not all of us are. So we actually have that drink culture. It's proof by the traditional liquor which still produce and consume in several region like North Sumatera, Bali,Manado, east side of Indonesia even in Java too. But as I said it just several region and depends on the person itself.

Fun fact, Indonesia have very good beer, Bintang beer. Every time Koreans or foreigners come to Indonesia for vacation (especially in Bali), they will always order Bintang beer because it's very famous and very tasty (although i don't drink at all but i heard many stories and many other people's videos)

It's because it's a greetings directed towards children. Children generally doesn't care about bath time so that's why your relatives will greet you like that. It'll be weird if they still greet you that way when you're an adult.

Indonesia has less drinker because the majority are Muslim. Muslim has a very strict rule about alcohol and some type of meat especially pig and dog meat. So to build trust with the majority of customer most restaurant won't serve it. Some even won't eat at a restaurant without halal label from the government. It's not about biased but we just afraid with the unknown ingredients
Rendang and fried rice are included in the list of the world's best foods because of the voting conducted by CNN. Because many Indonesians are voting, these two foods can be in the top position. The Civet can identify which coffee beans are of good quality. Therefore, Civet is fed coffee beans so that farmers can get the best coffee beans.
Indonesia doesn't have a beer drinking culture but they do have their own traditional "liquor" such as TUAK (palm wine) made from palm sap

People who are sceptical about rendang and nasi goreng as top dishes definitely haven't tried them at all or didn't try the authentic ones made by skillful indonesian cooks.
If you want to rate a dish you have to go right to the source with the use of original local spices and ingredients. If you're not in indonesia. Don't rate it in some random restaurant especially if it's cooked by non-Indonesians cooking them by just following a recipe. You'll miss its art and soul, probably won't have the right taste too.

Actually Indonesians also have drinking culture. There are lots kind of liquor from Indonesia. Some Indonesian liquors are fermented 'nira', fruits, rice or sticky rice. Two well-known Indonesian liquors are 'arak Bali' and 'Tjap Tikus'. But it's true that there's stick rule in Indonesia regarding with drinking culture as the majority of Indonesians are moslem who are for drinking liquors and to prohibit chaos that may occur when 'drunken masters' are getting mad. If you drink liquor with Indonesians so you must keep drinking until all bottles served empty.

About Luwak Coffee.. Actually farmers know this because the natural behavior of Luwak that eat the best coffee been in their farm. Years ago they just pick the Luwak coffee bean from the ground. They found that this coffee been still in the best shape and start to process it. turned out that coffee been has more flavor and soft at the same time. Key words : naturally, Luwak only eat the best coffee bean from the tree.
indeed, from what i heard (CMIIW) back during the colonial era, farmers were forced to plant coffee. back then, civets were considered pest because they ate coffee beans but then the farmers realized that civets only ate the best quality coffee beans which was the reason why they harvested the droppings. also, it was because back in those days, the farmers who worked on the coffee plantation could only drink coffee taken from civet droppings (as the one they picked from the tree were sold to Europe by the colonial government)

A bit of addition, there are some history of local alcohol, but somewhere among the time it considered excessive and morally bad, or too Western. Arak Bali, Ciu, and some Tuaks are the local examples (can't say what do they taste like because I don't trust myself with alcohols 😅). Thankfully now with local produce pride movements, some of them seem to try to be marketable for those who want to drink, even the infamous Cap Tikus (which at one point what people call cheap booze made from strong alcohols that should have killed you).
