‘We lived happily…now they call and cry’: In Manipur’s ‘ghost village’ | Ground Report

- With over 400 houses set ablaze, the Serou village in Sugnoo block of Manipur’s Kakching district now looks like a ghost town.
But until the arson, which took place on May 28, normalcy had prevailed in Sugnoo even though violence had begun to grip other areas. A peace committee, comprising members of all communities, had been formed in the area immediately - with help from the police and Congress MLA K Ranjit Singh - after initial reports of clashes in other parts of the state.
But it all changed on May 28. As a group of nearly 60 armed miscreants from the Kuki community allegedly targeted Meitei properties in Serou, the violence spilled over to other areas. A group of over 2,000 Meiteis subsequently mobilised in Sugnoo from Bishnupur, Kakching and Imphal, to allegedly lead an attack in Kuki-dominated areas such as Zouveng and Singtam. More than 150 houses were set ablaze, with 10 casualties.
In Serou, meanwhile, a villager told Newslaundry, “All of them ran away and never returned. They are in a relief camp. Sometimes they call and cry. Earlier, we all used to stay together happily but now our village has become a jungle.”
Why did the peace committee fail to ensure normalcy in the area? What triggered the violence? And what has been the impact on Serou, which also houses Nepalis and Bengalis?

I am a residence of serou . We have witnessed what happen on 28th of may in serou . We will expressed what we see and what we face without any fear. We are very less in population but we wont lie , we will not be under pressure of anybody . We are gorkha . We known for bravery , honesty and loyalty . Lastly ,I want to add that to the group who think they have won serou and want to occupy serou . We gorkhas will not make this happen . Serou belongs to Meiteis ,Nepali and Bengali community.

There was nighttime movements of vehicles into Sugnu & Serou from Thoubal for days before that. Zou-Thadou homes in and around Sugnu were systematically looted & burned for days followingthat fatefulday. Serou was very well reinforced & intact for days. THE RETALIATORY ATTACK ON SEROU WAS CARRIED OUT ABOUT A WEEK OR SO LATER. Look at the shifty eyes & rehearsed lines as they narrate their stories. Aren't you supposed to be trained professionals. The thing is there are no Kukis left to interview in the area. All I am saying is as you make you way to Serou- You could see Langching just on the immediate right of the main road, then further in Zo houses on the left side within Sugnu, then at the peripheral end of Sugnu right till Serou on the left side are entirely occupied by Kukis which all got burnt to the ground.
Kukis are totally chases away because- Sugnu PS is purely Meiteis and the local MLA Ranjit has entire forces (Police+Commando+Arambai Tenggols+Meetei Lipuns+Meitei 'civillians') backing him.
Kukis managed to burn some houses of Serou only while Meiteis were engaged in attacking Kangvai and Kangpokpi-Motbung.
So theres noone to interview from Kuki side. All i was asking was to at least show the burnt Kuki settlements and acknowledge at least the sufferings and plight of Kukis as well.

Langching a kuki village was burned down first by the meetei mobs. This incident dented the peace call by the local mla, to which both the communities have restrained themselves from indulging in violence. Why and how the peace deal was breached by the meetei mobs is what many from different parts of the state ponders, though the reason is well known to everyone.
