    Man, your explanations are gold. So many artists sell their tutorials and they only teach you to copy their technique, but you are teaching to understand and pay attention to things. Drawing, and painting is not only a matter of technique but understanding the nature that surrounds us. I'll become you Patreon as soon as I can.

    • @Swatches
      @Swatches  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's it in a nutshell Bob, understanding over technique. If you understand something you can channel that through many techniques but if you only know the technique you are locked into one way of doing things.

    This is really useful and well explained. What I usually do when building my library is: I'll copy by looking at the reference and right after I've finished my study I'll try to redraw it from mind (no ref.). Later I'll break it down into simple forms and try visualize it from different angles. Repeat that multiple times (important) and it will sooner or later stay in my mind. It's also more fun for me to do it that way since I can see almost immediate results of what information is retained and what parts need to be worked on.

    I'm a comic book artist and all my "art life" has revolved around black and white.
    I'm slowly learning my way around color theory and I just wanted to say that among a lot of youtube artists and tutorials, yours have amazing depth since you don't speak only in terms of process and "how to" but rather try to simplify concepts that can be hard to grasp. Being also a teacher in what I do that is a huge part of my method and I connect and respect that.
    Thanks for all the great tips and for taking the time to share.

    • @Swatches
      @Swatches  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment! If you teach someone how to draw one thing then it does them no good when they try to draw something else but as you know, if you can teach the concept then they can apply that to any situation they want.

    This is what I've learned from this video and I want to write it down so other people can see it and benefit from it at least I hope so😅
    1:45
    Issue 1: BAD VISUAL MEMORY
    _dont have a need for that information therefore don't remember that information
    _Use references to provide information to solve your problem
    5:43
    Issue 2: UNDERSTANDING THE SUBJECT
    _” I can write a sentence in Japanese if I'm looking at a page that has Japanese writing on it but I can't write an original sentence in Japanese”
    _stop mindlessly copying but rather understand the 3D structure of your subject
    _dont draw people as you see them draw the form and the frame underneath that person ( the Xray vision or the construction of the human body )
    11:50
    Issue 3: BENEFIT FROM COPYING
    There is a benefit in copying what you see 100%
    _that will force you to really look at the reference (observe the reference)
    _When drawing pay attention how curtain thing works
    For instance how lighting works in that image
    + how many light source
    + is there bounce light
    + what kind of shadow is that where is the occlusion shadow does that shadow have soft or hard edge
    Etc
    _Being able to understand your subject and have a solid foundation and knowledge can help you observe your reference better
    _learning the fundamental of art as learning a recipe in cooking so later on you can recall those memories and use them in another drawing that you make
    _Again having a need for knowledge makes you retain that knowledge longer when you study it ---> the less you will actually need a reference to draw that subject
    18:08
    Issue 4: MEMORIZE THREE IDENTIFIER
    _ picking a subject that you want to remember better
    For example 18:23 - 20:25
    21:40
    Final issue: INGRAINING BAD HABITS
    _Not using references when you don't know the subject you are drawing will create a habit of drawing thing WRONG
    _If someone tells you to draw a car engine how can you draw it without a reference to look at
    Conclusion: if you don't really know how to draw something accurately without that reference GET THE REFERENCE or else in the long run that habit will be detrimental to your art

    Thank you soo much!! I really appreciated this video!! You don't know how much I've struggled with the guilt and not having confidence in the authenticity of my work. It really helped me understand what an artist truly is and it helped me consolidate that my work IS every bit as original as the sources I reference from! Again Thank you soo much and God bless!

    • @Swatches
      @Swatches  8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      I'm glad you found the video helpful! The idea that "real artists don't use reference and just draw from their imagination" is hogwash. Every artist draws from reference, some are physical before us and the others are simply references we memorized that we ref from our head.

  • @elsevillaart
    @elsevillaart 10 ปีที่แล้ว +35

    Great videos, humble and masterful, keep coming the great art. Sometimes its better to do the sketch out of nothing, so you dont copy or be influenced by the photo, then you search for references in a similar pose, like doing a collage to match the image, some people have their anatomy references in grayscale, so they dont get influenced by colors, usually when you start doing a drawing of a photo, you tend to copy it all, color, light , pose.

    • @Swatches
      @Swatches  10 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      You're right, it's likely better if your initial rough sketches thumbnails are reference free to free you from too much influence but once your direction is set that's the time to start rounding up some reference to help sell the realism.

    • @elsevillaart
      @elsevillaart 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Swatches Yeahwhen i start with a photo, you copy light source and most of the times colors, thats why some artists recomend using references in grayscale.

    You're so right, i been working for many years without references, and this way of drawing and design in general increases your imagination, but by the other hand it makes so difficult to achieve forms right from reality like horses like you said. When you think talent itself is gonna make you a better artist, you're choosing the wrong path, it has to be a balance between memory resources and references from the real world.

    I swear we think so much alike.
    When you mentioned the idea of “copying 2D representations of the image” vs “understanding the 3D construction of the image”, I felt really satisfied, haha.
    A really interesting idea for drawing would be “Draw this reference rotated 45/60/90 degrees clockwise/counterclockwise”.

    I think it's always good to have reference. Maybe a texture reference or color reference or mood reference in the case of the dragon for a concept artist. Or the exact photo you want to copy for an illustrator. But especially when using reference for studies I always challenge myself to push the photo to make it something my own. The reference is just a tool, and can only help push your art to something further.

    Thank you for all this stuff I've found on Swatches channel. It is very inspiring and useful even when you already now something and spent a lot of time in art. For me there where as much new stuff and tips as already known and I was able to refresh it in my memory. Thanks a lot!
    May I ask for a little help\advice? I spent about 10 years in traditional art and I am still far away to call myself pro in this (there are so many things left to learn ofc) but when I'm trying to draw something on usual paper or canvas with oil paints from my imagination - it's not a problem. Poses, faces, landscapes, etc. But a few days ago my first tablet was delivered and I am trying to get used to it. Drawing over some photos and screenshots is not a problem as I see for myself (just before I'll reach coloring step), but to start draw anything without references on blank page feels like a dead end. I got ideas and sometimes even whole picture in my head and I know how to do this on paper... but tablet is like something very unusual.
    So the question is - is it all about long way practicing with references and going back to very beginning (sketches and linearts, some anatomy basics)? I am just a little bit confused to go so far backward when I already passed all of this and spent so much time on that in past. Maybe just need someone experienced enough to say to me: "yes, deal with it" :)
    And thanks again for all helpfull and informative videos!

    I think it's also important to note that invention comes from necessity. If you're just sitting around drawing pictures of ladies posing, there is no need to invent and thusly there is no need for you to fill a scenario with your own ideas and problem solving. if you set a project for yourself of illustrating a concept or an idea, especially one that doesn't exist, you are FORCED to create problem solutions and to invent.
    For instance, illustrate Little Red Riding Hood On Mars. Now you A) Have to use reference photos because you have no idea what mars looks like and B) Can't possibly find a reference photo that exactly depicts what you are looking for. So, invention becomes necessary.

    • @_____._..--_
      @_____._..--_ 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      JazGalaxy You get the anatomy and posture lodged inside your noggin also, you need to draw a bunch of random pics of mars landscapes before you actually draw it from imagination, before imagination theres real life

    I get what you're saying now about drawing the 3D shapes and forms you see in a figure, not their clothing, but how do you go about doing this for things like environments to put your characters in? How do you use references in a way that influence your 3D forms you put down and you're not just copying what you see like a copy machine? I'm just starting to learn about how to construct the human figure but have no idea on how to construct your own scenes to put your figures in.

    if you go to any kind of art school or class, it's all drawing from life. Some people probably can memorize poses after doing lots of figure or anatomy drawing.But i've never seen anyone i know emphasize that. idk maybe people who do comics and all that are different.

    I recently found out doing some research that visualizing images in your head isn't that easy for most people. I even have visual representations for abstract things like months days etc not because I sat to think about it but is just the way my brain works , it associates words with images automatically, I thought everyone did this but apparently it's not that common.

    I'm a 15 year old high school student who's slowly transitioning from traditional art to digital, and I was wondering if it was odd that to draw my images, I combine several images to create what I have in mind, for example one image used as a base for the pose, another for hair, another for eyes, the list goes on.

      Not odd at all, in fact that's common. Unless you have the opportunity to set up your own photoshoot and control all the parameters it's unlikely any one reference will have all the information you need.

    Thank you so very much, Clint! I'd share these ideas with my fellow artists and I would apparently include them into our courses in Scream School, Moscow - referring to you and your most useful channel. Thanks again and - please do tell if you have some way to accept any recompense? I strongly believe such an effective work deserves it.
