Honestly, shoddy writing aside, I think The Painter gets way too much negativity thrown its way for a series that's not even that bad. There's still a lot of good aspects that this series can stand on, yet most people would overlook. Besides, I know plenty of analog horror series that are much worse than The Painter, yet no one says anything about them.
I think its kinda like slasher movies, there is no really need to have a mystery or a complex lore, I just wanna see the spooks. I don't think its bad, the paintings were cool and it had its moments, it is quite mid.
I really like the unique vibe of it, and for a while everyone kind of either enjoyed it or just ignored it, then he got into the twitter drama and he just became the punching bag of the community, I guarantee half the people shitting on it haven't even watched it
I mean, visually it is pretty amazing I don't really get where the controversy and hate comes from Yes, there are no substantial "story", but not every piece of media needs a story
I agree on the fact that you don't need a story to have some spooks, but just so you understand, that's not the only criticism the urban gets, the main reason people hate it because of the quite a bit of SA and random cases of zoophilia included in the series.
The controversy came from a bunch of terminally online Twatter and Plebbit creaturas getting butthurt that Urbanspook went the whole 9 yards trying to make his series as fucked up as the stuff actual serial killers do, because his series is about serial killers. It started from some cunty Plebbitor named Minaxa who made a hit piece disguised as criticism, which then caused his audience of brainfucked dicksucking drones to try and cancel him with bunk ass and retarded accusations of Urbanslug being a pedo. It didn't work because the accusations were retarded. A little bit later, Pastra does the exact same thing with his fanbase of cripplingly autistic FNAF shitkids, Urbanslug gets sick of their shit and snaps back, and the entire self righteous Twatter and Plebbitoid community and creators jumps down his throat. After this happened, I lost all respect for them I had. No wonder analog horror is a fucking joke now.
@@SomeWeirdTH-camr No that's not the case. The main reason people hate it, is because (in other peoples words) "feels pointless and nothing but shock value, I get nothing out of it" The Child sa shown was considered "disrespectful and wasn't handled properly" The girl bleeding from the horse ramming into her was a considered a "gross unnecessary scene of zoophilia." The man that got his wounds penetrated sexually was considered "gross for no reason and hint at the killers being nercophilla" And people believe these "kills are just over the top without any reasons, no motivation on why the killers kill, just painting, kill, painting, kill" (These aren't my opinions, I'm just explaining why he's getting hate from others opinions.)
14:00 Five Nights at Freddy's, Silent Hill, the Exorcist, and many others having been doing this for years: th-cam.com/video/t76jz7iFiAY/w-d-xo.html This is just me, but I feel like people are taking the whole analog horror thing too seriously, and anything that's not slightly more real than an incorporeal monster with the grin filter on it is too much. Is The Painter the best thing in storytelling, no, I've honestly yet to see any AH series that reaches that anyways. But acting as if it's some sacrilegious beast when all it is is just something akin to Friday the 13th or Halloween is pretty ridiculous. If you want to pretend to care about these issues, at least remember the difference between fiction and reality, and that reality is still pretty grizzly.
I personally think its overhated, there are way way wayyy worse analog horror stuff, i think its pretty fun, great concept, great art, great audio, not much but still great voice acting. I just wish there was more videos like the later ones Urbanspook made like the police call one with the women who was being attacked with a chainsaw and the latest video called "hell" which was also pretty good. I dont care about the videos being controversial as long as it isnt real or whatever, horrific stuff happens in movies like terrifier which is pure shock value and sad to say- the boys which loves to use shock value which adds nothing at this point because we've seen it so much. But people still love those movies and the boys but people will still hate on Urbanspook for being "shock value" when not even showing any of it. Personally not showing any form of gore thats not a painting makes it even better because it lets you imagine just how horrific their deaths were if it was in real life, which is made even better with the voice acting- and even the music since it sets the vibe and kinda puts you on edge. Just my opinion, not peak analog horror but not complete trash. Its goofy shock horror fun, like if art the clown wasnt funny at all and a good painter
I think urbanspooks work is their work. I’m an artist and I get it, they have their style and subjects, which is more or less end of discussion for me (for ME). I just think the audience response is what really killed it. Clearly urbanspook has a vision, and executed well or not, it’s still clear what they like to do and how they like to showcase it. However edgy or pointless it seems to outside observers . Good on them for doing what they like but Yknow. Make work people think is contrived, don’t be surprised by the backpash
Ngl it seems repetitive and seems to have it's only feature as mediocre lore and shock value from how the deaths happened and the paintings. Doesn't seem very interesting, so yes, it is
Truth is, I don't find urbanspook's art interesting or talented at all, just, generic crass art that tries too hard to be creepy. I feel gaslit everytime I hear of his artistic prowess, but maybe it's something people say just to not sound too negative when criticizing the guy?
Woah woah woah woah woah, you can't just objectively review the series! You have you to harass and falsely accuse Urbanslug and his fanbase of being pedophiles because his series makes Twatter and Plebbit uncomfy!

This is a result of creator being an insensitive jerk. Also I'd argue "shoddy writing" would still be a major part in the story, no?
It's edge and gore for the sake of edge and gore, but sometimes it's nice to have a schlocky splatterfest.
Ngl the painter parody part had me crying from laughing so hard

U agree I was quite unsettled by the restored vhs
Yeah it kinda reminds of campy horror movies like house of 1000 corpse and motel hell
