Back in 1977 I had just gotten out of the Marines and I was working at the 7-11 store in Daytona Beach Shores Florida down the road from Gregg Allman's Mom. The guys from Marshall Tucker used to hang out around there with Gregg Allman. The Marshall Tucker Band was a bunch of really nice guys. They'd come into the store and stay and talk to me for awhile. One of them even came in once to apologize for Gregg Allman's drunken rage in the store the night before.

My dad died in July so it's been a rough six months. I randomly listened to this song then sent it to my mom and three brothers the other night and said "this reminds me of Dad." Turns out my mom was in a bar and this song was playing at the same time. And before hearing about it, my aunt woke in the middle of the night and randomly listened to it. Just when you believe life is nothing other than existence.

Saw them with Atlanta Rhythm Section at a rodeo in Ventura CA , haybales as seats in the dirt under a moonlit night suckin up on a bottle of JD chased down with Buds enjoying sounds with my shipmates in ' 79 . Listening to this tugs at my heart strings , could always see this in my mind playing out for real in the west somewhere. So glad I grew up in an era that was so much better . God bless y'all .

Man.. everytime I hear this song.. I’m from South Carolina and I can’t seem to think I would have done the same thing over 150 years ago. Move out west for hopes of making generational wealth. It’s hard now for the 80 hr a week common working man here in today’s time.. I couldn’t imagine what it was like back then

Took my fam'ly away from our Carolina home
Had dreams about the west and started to roam
Six long months on a dust covered trail
They say heaven's at the end
But so far it's been hell
And there's fire on the mountain
    Lightening in the air
Gold in them hills and it's waiting for me there
We were digging and shifting from five to five
Selling ev'rything we found just to stay alive
Gold flowed free like the whiskey in the bars
Sinning was the big thin Lord
    And satan was the star
And there's fire on the mountain
    Lightening in the air
Gold in them hills and it's waiting for me there
Dance hall girls were the evening treat
Empty cartridges and blood lined the gutters of the street
Men were shot down for the sake of fun
Or just to hear the noise of their 44 guns
And there's fire on the mountain
    Lightening in the air
Gold in them hills and it's waiting for me there
Now my widow, she weeps by my grave
Tears flow free for her man she couldn't save
Shot down in cold blood by a gun that carried fame
All for a useless and no good worthless claim
And there's fire on the mountain
    Lightening in the air
Gold in them hills and it's waiting for me there
