All the really dangerous stuff is finished and all the hull painting, as well. But they still have to redo the deck, paint everything above the deck, and install all the air defense guns they removed for restoration. That is an Amish nail puller. I hunted for years to find one. Now I have to hunt to find it around my shop. I use a hand pin pointer metal detector to check my second chance lumber for hidden nails and screws.
The first tool is actually called a Cat Paw, and the second one is called a Sliding Nail Puller. Now Mike, I always looked up to you as a very capable person, but... a torx bit screw has got to be the easiest screw to drive!
The "crash" hurt millions of us builders, literally losing everything. It is good to see a success story like this. Alas, not so much for me. I'm off the streets at least making my pens. Great story Mike.

There are a lot out there that need this change, but not enough programs to rehab them. And to reintegrate attics and homeless back into working class citizens. I absolutely love it and we need more of it.
This guy is a hero. Thank you for sharing these untold stories. With that in mind ... Mike, you should look into Rob Cosman's Purple Heart Project (PHP). Rob is a master furniture maker, tool maker and educator. Several years ago he started the PHP - a charity for combat wounded vets (physical or mental), where an all expense paid trip is provided to selected vets to come to his workshop and learn hand tool woodworking. It's been found that this type of work is extremely therapeutic for the people who have suffered trauma from serving their countries (U.S. or otherwise). After a week long course, they're sent back home with $4k worth of tools so they can continue building and healing.
My cat claw is my most used tool...we were poor growing up and wanted to build a tree house...so, we went to neighbors to get used lumber...so in turn we had to straighten the nails and reuse them too...to make a long story short...we had several forts and treehouses joined together by catwalks too...I am 60 and a few of those treehouses are still there even though my childhood home has gone through several owners...my mom taught us very well! Here's a tip...used a small piece of 2x4 to increase your leverage, that nail comes out easier and straighter! Tada!

He was a Master Trim & Finish Carpenter and Housebuilder after the Marine Corps. My Dad taught me everything I know about new construction, remodeling and furniture refinishing I know. I'm so grateful he raised me to be the son that I am even though I was his only daughter. ❤ What amazing company giving those a second chance others would not. Not only are they helping people in dire situations... They're also saving our forests and trees by recycling and using materials that usually get scrapped or burned! Sounds like a NOBLE company! A LOT of older wood can be used to bring nostalgia and history and it's kinda like, I don't know... Just beautiful!
Quite truthfully, there is no greater satisfaction for a man as when you build something. For me, it's building cabinets or tables and even building a computer.

My dad was a upholsterer, when I would go work with him and help. I had to pull on fabric or help install, my hands would cramp up fast. He would just say to my "You’re hand aren’t weak, you just have computer hands. Just like I wanted."
This reminds me of my dad. My dad and my uncle started up a cabinet shop, and in the 80's a lot of people came over from Vietnam after the war, they made Sask. their home and not only found a home bu they made the company grow. I grew up in that place and I am thankful to have experienced that in my life. Community and the human spirit can go much further than people realize.

I have an old version of that mystery slide hammer tool. The old timers say originally it was for pulling fencing staples out of wooden fenceposts, but it works pretty well on larger nails too.

My angel is my boss. I have known her for 17 years now and she only hires and helps people getting sober. I worked for her since I was 15 after getting in trouble with the law and she till this day helps me be a better man. Thank god for her.
We live within spit'n distance of Lamon's shop. So, as my wife love Old Town VR, I'd showed her this episode, hoping she'd love me even more, if that's possible. Nope. She smacked me on my bald head and exclaimed, MIKE ROWE, was within spit'n distance of our house, and, YOU said nothing! Like I schedule Mike's content.
The tool at the beginning is called a slide nail puller, pretty sure the one he was using is made by Crescent and they still sell them. He was using it correctly just need a bit more finesse. The slide is used the same a slide hammer to hammer the claw head into the wood, but can also be extended to give more leverage. I have used dozens of tools to clean wood, but pretty much rely on a claw hammer, dikes and channel lock pliers.

Awesome video. These guys turned their life around because they wanted too. They wanted too very baddly. I have seen people go thru rehab and clean their life up. But, saddly too say a very high percentage will go back too the addiction they fight so hard after awhile maybe many years down the road. But, we do need more companys like this that put these types too work when they want too work.

Mike I'm telling ya an episode on commercial printing ink. I used to run a 3 roll mill but the compents and machines, raw ingredients, vanishes, pigment, lab QC etc yall would have a hay day!
Loved this for bringing back memories of visiting my Uncle Emory who had a big workshop for building anything wood and Aunt Evelyn who made sure everyone was well fed and watered. Uncle Em was my dad's favorite brother and supplier of occasional cigars for them both. Was a great time to be a kid.
It's called a nail puller and I grew up using one many times. We have one as well we got from an estate sale. Works great. Growing up we had to save and reuse the nails we pulled out. On the farm you reuse everything you can.
During the entire time Mike was trying to remove those nails, I kept screaming at my screen: "Its a lever!" The first tool can extend to allow better leverage (collapsed for portability/storage), but should be pulled in the direction of the foot after being placed over the nail. The second tool that looked like a pair of pliars with a long flatish curve on one side, is also made to allow the use of the long side as the fulcrum of lever, for greater pulling power. It hurt me to see Mike use them like a pair of pliars, just pulling and wriggling them, the business owner just stood there and watched him struggle. I would have expected someone to at least show him the right way to use the tools!
Some of the best people I have met in my life time were criminals. Loyal found God realize their mistakes and trying to make up for it. I love what he doing here..
My family owned a hardware store and I worked in retail hardware stores after we closed. That black tool is called a nail puller. They can be a pain to use and the key I found was to spread the jaws as wide as possible and slam the rest down as hard as possible. Then you rock it towards the paw side.
