spooky how an the intro to an REM song written nearly 19 years ago can mesh so well with this song. Joey is a powerful and thought provoking song by itself but by adding just a touch of Mike Mills' (Bassist for REM) genius it can have such deeper impact.
i know some of y'all won't agree but oh well.....This song is amazing! It sounds so much better with the Nightswimming intro. It gives kind of a back story to the song. I personally think they should have recorded the original 'Joey' like this. It's SO much better. Also, Sugarland doesn't suck at writing, I know some of their songs are weird, but they also have some REALLY good songs. So y'all can shut up about that.
"What if I'd gone out that night?" "What if I spoke up?" "What if I took the keys?" "What if you'd turned left?" I gather that Joey was driving drunk, and got in a fatal accident. The singer wishes she could have been there to stop him somehow. People have said they wish that the lyrics stated exactly how he died , but I prefer a song that actually makes me think about its meaning instead of says "Joey, I'm so sorry you got in a right turn accident driving drunk." Maybe that's just me.

Does it actually say he died? because i thought that he could have been in a coma or something. saying Can You hear me, people always say that people in a coma can hear you. jsut wondering.

I've listened to this album at least 100 times and this still gives me chills!
