She said "hold my tea." She's English. 😉 Maxwell did a great vocal imitation of Kate's performance, but this is her song. She puts her whole heart into every word. Kate's song was written for a movie, and it's about a man waiting in a hospital for his wife to give birth--and the birth is high risk and both the baby's and his wife's life could be lost. Kate is a woman singing from the vantage point of a man, and she's empathizing with the man who has been rendered powerless. He must stand outside and wait, incapable of doing anything, as his wife now holds the responsibility of saving her life, their child's life, and the man's life by not devastating him. All the man can do is feel agony and worry, realizing that he could lose his wife and expected child and also realizing how much pressure his wife has to do her job, which is to preserve life. Kate's writing is both empathetic and demonstrates that she understands what a man would feel in that situation and also illuminating, helping men to understand the tremendous risks and responsibilities that only women bear. And her musical arrangement and vocal performance convey all these thoughts. Nothing against Maxwell, but this woman Kate's work is a much greater accomplishment.
Beautifully said. Besides the raw emotion that comes across in the original, there's something that just doesn't feel quite as powerful about a man lamenting how hard it is for him, even while acknowledging the woman having to do the brunt of the work, as opposed to a woman, bearing that burden, and yet still having the love, compassion, and empathy to acknowledge how difficult it is for the man to feel so helpless to bear any part of it for or along with the woman he loves, and the range of emotions involved in those moments.

I also want to say that Kate’s enunciation comes through more clearly in her version than the Maxwell‘s enunciation does for me. I spent most of his version trying to understand what he was saying, until he started using his deep chest voice toward the end, and then came back to his falsetto and I did understand him there in his falsetto as well. But for the most part the emotions don’t really come through for me. The melodic choices, which I understand were very characteristic of R&B back in the late 90s/2000s, they affected the impact that the song and it’s the lyrics and melody were supposed to have. Love Maxwell’s cover, but Kate’s my winner too, she writes, performs and produces her music. I don't think there should be a comparison. They both sang with heart and soul. I love Maxwell and he acknowledges Kate Bush in his concert version saying how amazing she is. And being inspired by her. Kate Bush in her artistry to it because she sang, wrote, and produced it in her time and space. It wasn't for people to do comparisons. Her work on it was for that time. Only because the nuances gives me that feeling of loss and love in its deepest form. Thank you for this video.
So nice to see someone appreciate a person's take on a song instead of trashing it. I love both versions. It's kinda funny. A friend of mine played Maxwell's version for me in 9th or 10th grade back when his album came out. I didn't enjoy it at all. It was too slow for me and the instrumentation was too sparse. I found it boring. Fast forward to a few years ago when I heard the original and it actually allowed me to appreciate the cover! Lol. I guess my ears matured. I mean, that had already for years by that point, but for some reason I didn't get back around to that song for a while.
So true. I was at the first night of Bat for Lashes tour in Birmingham a few years ago when she bottled it first time around. She played it as an encore, and you could sense the whole audience willing her on, which really fit the mood of the piece.
You can’t beat perfection and that is what Kate is, utter perfection. Listened to her music almost daily since 1978. No other artist has held my attention to music like Kate. She is priceless.
Kate Bush version no doubt. She not only sang it first, she wrote it. And I have to say that the emotions portrayed feels more genuine in her performance although Maxwell version is good.
It goes to show you how much influence Kate Bush had on music. Maxwell sounds somewhat like Prince - especially when his voice goes down. Kate Bush recorded a song with Prince - called "Why Should I Love You". Check it out. It also has the voices of a Bulgarian woman's singing group called Trio Bulgarka. Very unique blend of styles.
Kate Bush is a legend, she writes her songs, choreographed them, performed them, played Piano on all her songs and by 19 she had over 250 songs to her name. Her first recorded song at 15 she authored at only 13 years old. This was The Man in the Childs Eye.
I think both sing it beautifully but Kate Bush has to get more props for the track even if you prefer Maxwell's version. She wrote it and as an overall artist she was on another level. She wrote and produced all of her own music. Some of her music is weird by mainstream standards so she wasn't as famous as she could've been but even if her style is not for you, no denying she's one of the most unique and talented artists ever.
Maxwells version changes the vocal melody and in a number of places uses cliched gospel steps to reach the next note. Maxwell took two existing forms and combined them - diluting them both.
Not a contest. An original masterpiece written by Kate and reproduced for a broader audience with Maxwell. I always get the frissons when I listen to Kate’s version and though Maxwell can hit the notes, I do not get the frissons, it sounds disconnected from the meaning. Kate knows what the message of the song intimately and uses her talent to tell her story; it’s all heart ❤️
I’m listening to Maxwells right now as I’m reading this, and I feel like he does tap on the emotions at moments, but then slides in and out of it because he still trying to add his gospel/R&B stylings to keep it different from the original. So the impact isn’t quite as intense as what I feel from Kates version. So he has a nice version which he sings with some emotion, but she has an epic version that she sings with powerful emotions.
Kate Bush is one of the most iconic songwriters and artists of the 80's. She's Having a Baby (1988), starring Kevin Bacon. It's amazing how people are ignorant even about the songs they like. And WTF is Maxwell?
Kate Wore this Woman's Work for a movie soundtrack "She's Having a Baby" the song us about A man waiting for a woman to give birth. Kate directed the video with a vague hospitalization and left her death or survival open ended. The song was not heard much until she prerelease it a few years later . sorry Maxwell
There is nothing to compare. Kate Bush sings her own song, with her full emotions. Kate sang it perfect without coolness, just with voice and the piano. Maxwell sings it great with swag, fitting for this time. Kates Version is an old version, but still unreached.
1988 "This Woman's Work" written and performed by Kate Bush was featured in film "She's Having a Baby" & also released on "The Sensual World" 1989 & peaked at 25 on UK Singles Charts & a 1997 Gerald Maxwell Rivera cover 9 years later required permission & or payment to Kate Bush
You know what? If you actually just listened to the whole song and watched the video, without stopping and starting and trying to interpret it, you would get closer to it. She is a wonderful storyteller. The second version comes nowhere near the original
This is from the man's perspective, of the helplessness and fear he's feeling that his woman won't survive a difficult child birth. P.S. It has a happy ending, by the smile on the nurses face as she taps him on the shoulder.
Fantastic review - really enjoyed it. Maxwell is super talented, but it’s Kate for me. There is such a gorgeous tone and depth to her voice, and her opening calls sound to me like she’s weeping. This Woman’s Work is a masterpiece.
There is no contest I'm afraid. Maxwell doesn't come close to expressing the emotions of the original song. Neither should we expect him to do so. Kate Bush is a force of nature.
Covering kate bush is like covering Prince, no matter how fresh, new an dope they do it ,it will never have the originals feel, the fact kate bush like Prince wrote all of her own music.. maxwell did an amazing job with this song.
The fact that she's a woman singing her perspective gives the song a special meaning... Not to mention the deep video. But personally, Maxwell's version is simply beautiful. And his voice shows his level of talent, very artistic. So it really depends on the perspective.
Kate has made it known to all that she sings this song from a man's perspective. Therefore, Maxwell could have sung it using his natural voice, instead of trying to sound like a castrated schoolboy.
I don't think there is a loser here. Kate version is beautiful especially with the emotional tug of the video. I actually think you should of used Maxwell's Unplugged version. Maxwell's range is so wide that he can definitely tug at your heart strings. I love both versions.
The actor in the video is Tim Mcinnery who is best known as the weasely captain darling in the bbc sitcom blackadder goes fourth. Look. There are pretty good cover versions of quite a few Kate Bush songs and she has always been very generous in her praise of them. But nobody will ever match her. And how could they? She writes, arranges, produces virtually all of her material. All that is done with her unique voice in mind. She puts her heart and soul into everything. This Maxwell did a good job. But going up against Kate is like bringing a knife to a gunfight. It's not going to end well. Nevertheless. Good reaction video pal.
Maxwell's clearly a very talented singer, but there's really no comparison. His version is polished and note perfect, Kate's is vulnerable and shaking. His take is somebody that misses somebody in his life that's gone, Kate's take is caring about what somebody else is going through, even though she is the one she should be worrying about. Maxwell sung the way he sings every song, Kate tailored this performance to the nuances of this specific song. There's no question who the winner is.
Kate's hits hard, Maxwell's interpretation gives respects to it. Both sang it from inside, but they hit so different even though the emotion is the same. Maxwell's version is from his perspective and like you said it's almost like he's begging to bring her back. With Kate, it's her perspective, concerned about what he's going through while she's doing This Woman's Work to fight for her own life as if she's more worried about him than what she is going through herself. She wins because the music structure is left open, unresolved and ambiguous leaving this sense of constant tension that just escalates until it ends. Musically, Maxwell's version does have it's resolve and literally ends on a sad note.
Good choice as the winner because I feel that Kate Bush's voice has more sense of vulnerability and emotions! Kate Bush's character survives at the end of the music video.
This isn't even a question. Kate is a vocal goddess. You want visuals then watch "She's Having a Baby". The song is actually played during a difficult birth. Tears are practically a guarantee.
Not always, some artists even admit they like a cover better, oasis (noel) liked Ryan's wonderwall better, leonard said kd lang is how hallelujah should sound, trent said hurt was no longer his, stevie wonder literally asked rhcp to cover his song his song etc
@@inkoinfinity2 I know, I get it. Bob Dylan said Jimi Hendrix’s version of All Along The Watchtower was far superior. But that doesn’t change the fact that without the first one, the copy would not even exist. It’s a tribute to the original that made someone practice/rearrange a tune for many hours.
Do you pick Kate bush or a man trying to sing like Kate bush, easy choice lol...do you pick a natural voice, classical intruments, tweaking your emotions, or over produced samples? do you pick the artist who wrote it and played the piano produced it etc, or a pretty average cover version......it`s easy dude..bush bush, bush.....
The reason you never heard of Kate Bush is that she just wants to make her music. The promotion of interviews and photography and touring is just something she's not interested in doing. She's been around since the late 70's, my friend. So, so enjoyable to watch your reaction. I know you had to support your guy, and I love him for bringing Kate to other people's attention, but you got it right. She is a genius. Peace.
Maxwell's is a very good cover. The original version is one of the most ethereal, heartbreaking pieces of music ever produced. No contest, and that is no disrespect to Maxwell. He has originals that no cover could ever touch, too.
Coming at this from the opposite direction; I'd never heard of Maxwell, let alone his version of this song. So I gave it a listen and you know what? Wow he's good. But it reminds me of those recordings made by classical orchestras of pop songs: they hit all the notes perfectly and in all the right places, technically faultless. But they always fail to capture the emotion and depth, and you can't really put a finger on why that is, but they just leave you unmoved.
First time hearing Maxwell’s version. Nice try but no cigar. Kate wins hands-down. She is a genius with a voice that is unique, mesmerizing, and full of emotion that will tear your heart out of your chest!
Why is this even a question? No one can sing a Kate song better than Kate herself. She's a frickin' genius

Love Maxwell’s cover, but Kate’s my winner too, she writes, performs and produces her music. She wrote this for a scene in the film ‘She’s Having A Baby’ where the main character is having a traumatic birth (spoiler alert, both mother and baby survive).
Can I suggest Rocket Man, originally by Elton John, covered by Kate Bush. I’d love to see who you’d pick the winner.
I W9LL DEFINITELY BE CHECKING THE COMMENTS FOR REQUEST. AND ALSO SEE HOW TEH CHANNEL TAKES TO THESE. I CURRENTLY AHVE 6 DONE ALREADY
Maxwell's version was okay. But Kate's voice is so haunting and so incredibly beautiful, I don't even have the words. You feel it in your soul. I prefer Kate's original.
this song puts me to tears everytime because I went into double cardiac arrest getting prepped to deliver my Son while my Husband was outside waiting to come in for the delivery. He had no idea they were fighting to save the baby and my lives. He was finally brought in and he did everything he could not to break down when he saw me. He celebrates my Birthday every time my Son turns another year older and he dances this song with me. Our Son is now a wonderful and brilliant 12 year old.
Well Kate wrote the dang thing
Didn’t know that
And.
@@tottryship5608 ..........and..........She produced it, played piano, starred in and directed the video. Signed up to the record company at 16 years of age, having already written over 200 numbers. Her 2nd UK charting single (Man With The Child In His Eyes) was written at the age of 13 and was covered by none other than 1960s British legend Dusty Springfield. Her songs were sung by newcomers and veterans alike.
Hope that answered your question.
@@warrenbridges1891Well said.
And Maxwell's take was for his time and interpretation was for him inspired by Kate Bush. Both are amazing artists. For me? My heartstrings resonate with Kate Bushes time and space stamp on it.
You gotta have some balls to cover a Kate Bush song, especially this one. But he didn't fuck it up, so there's that :)
lol true
Kate is the winner here hands down no contest.
I agree, Kate Bush!
You could compare Kate Bush vs Placebo “Running Up That Hill”!
I’m a massive Kate fan. And not a fan of cover versions. But I do love Placebos cover
Kate Bush version no doubt. She not only sang it first, she wrote it. And I have to say that the emotions portrayed feels more genuine in her performance although Maxwell version is good.
Kate Bush
It goes to show you how much influence Kate Bush had on music. Maxwell sounds somewhat like Prince - especially when his voice goes down. Kate Bush recorded a song with Prince - called "Why Should I Love You". Check it out. It also has the voices of a Bulgarian woman's singing group called Trio Bulgarka. Very unique blend of styles.
crnel "Rocket's Tail"!!!!! . LOVE it!!
Well... unique (in the truest sense of the word), agreed.
Kate Bush is a legend, she writes her songs, choreographed them, performed them, played Piano on all her songs and by 19 she had over 250 songs to her name. Her first recorded song at 15 she authored at only 13 years old. This was The Man in the Childs Eye.
Big Boi has Kate on a pedestal
Damn indeed! Lol, he definitely wasn't expecting the genius that is Kate Bush!
Who the hell even thought this was a question? The question should never be asked again. Kate is a genius.
I believe that piano work is also done by Kate Bush
Maxwell did a beautiful cover but for me kate will forever knock me over with this song
Bro when you first paused it and just said DAMN!!! Got me in stitches
Most covers can't touch Kate, but Maxwell's got very close...
Kate is just something special. It’s rare, she’s up there with the greats
Kate Bush is probably the greatest female singer songwriter of all times.
I love both versions. Both beautiful. Soulful. But I can't ever deny the power of Kate Bush. I bet you Kate adored this cover.
"I know you have a little life in you yet" is such a good line with the double meaning.
Fantastic review - really enjoyed it. Maxwell is super talented, but it’s Kate for me. There is such a gorgeous tone and depth to her voice, and her opening calls sound to me like she’s weeping. This Woman’s Work is a masterpiece.
Glad you enjoyed it!
There is no contest I'm afraid. Maxwell doesn't come close to expressing the emotions of the original song. Neither should we expect him to do so. Kate Bush is a force of nature.
Covering kate bush is like covering Prince, no matter how fresh, new an dope they do it ,it will never have the originals feel, the fact kate bush like Prince wrote all of her own music.. maxwell did an amazing job with this song.
two wonderful versions
The fact that she's a woman singing her perspective gives the song a special meaning... Not to mention the deep video. But personally, Maxwell's version is simply beautiful. And his voice shows his level of talent, very artistic. So it really depends on the perspective.
Kate has made it known to all that she sings this song from a man's perspective. Therefore, Maxwell could have sung it using his natural voice, instead of trying to sound like a castrated schoolboy.
THERE IS NOTHING LIKE THE ORIGINAL.....
Maxwell did a passable imitation, but this song is Kate’s, yesterday, today, and forever.
Most unde Kate Bush's most understated ever, wrote and producer of everything
I don't think there is a loser here. Kate version is beautiful especially with the emotional tug of the video. I actually think you should of used Maxwell's Unplugged version. Maxwell's range is so wide that he can definitely tug at your heart strings. I love both versions.
Agreed
She wrote it for the movie "Having a Baby". The song is played when the wife goes into labour and complications puts her life into danger.
Kate's Bush original is more emotional and touching. Her voice is angelic.
How can you even compare ? Maxwell is just a good version. This is pure genius stuff.
Kate Bush is the original, the songwriter and THE BEST!
On a head to head there's only one winner 🇬🇧💐🏆
Kate Bush voice is like ringing on a crystal goblet, Maxwell's voice is like a flawless diamond if it had sound.
She wasn't saying I'm dying she was saying oh darling make it go away.
Song wrote, composed produced by Kate Bush released in 1989....whoever cover it,, the lion share royalties go to...
With an amazing song like this, any talented singer could deliver the gold!
Our darling Kate will always, always reign supreme ❤️
Good call fella. Kate Bush is vastly superior for me, just a beautifully purer version, and of course her voice.
No comparison, Kate Bush by a mile. The best female British singer to have graced music. The variety and range of her tone is mesmerising.
Wait till she starts screaming. Cover your heart!
Good choice as the winner because I feel that Kate Bush's voice has more sense of vulnerability and emotions! Kate Bush's character survives at the end of the music video.
Queen Kate. Her Song.
MAXWELL'S IS BEAUTIFUL... BUT KATE BUSH'S IS "PERFECTION" BEAUTIFUL!!!
This isn't even a question. Kate is a vocal goddess. You want visuals then watch "She's Having a Baby". The song is actually played during a difficult birth. Tears are practically a guarantee.
The original of any tune is the best. Without it you’d never have the cover. Kate is an awesome songwriter!

Hands down, Kate. It's her tune. Maxwell did a great job but Kate is untouchable.
Comparing Kate Bush to maxwell is like comparing a Rolls-Royce to a Pontiac Aztek.
Kate Bush the GOAT period 🎶💯 try Rockets Tail.. Hardest Drop ever... Cheers
There is no competition lol!
