If there wasn't a max limit of six extra lives, high scores would be much higher. Atari likely made that decision after releasing Asteroids where players would amass 100s of extra ships and play forever. Asteroids would become slower and slower the more extra ships there were in memory, and I think would trigger an overflow error if the number ships were greater than 256, causing the entire game to reset thus lose everything. It happened to me a few times.
My limit currently is between 500 and 600k - seem to have stagnated there for a while....but that's probably because I don't play enough, only a few times a month, and half hour at most (or as long as the game lasts). PLUS, I play on MAME with a mouse instead of a trackball. Mouse has it's advantages and it's disadvantages compared to a trackball.
This probably the best eye-hand coordination I have ever seen in any video game. You would make an excellent Tempest player, which I suspect you already are. Millipede is extremely hard almost from the start. I was good at Centipede; able to make a single game last for 20-30 minutes, but Millipede always kicked my butt. In my prime in the 80s, I could go the arcade and $3.00 would be the most that I would need to spend on various games for the entire evening. The only game I could play endlessly was Asteroids, which is not that are to master.
WOW! Arcade games were designed to be challenging but this one is WICKED tough. Engineered to crush players and grind the remains into a fine talcum-like powder!
Have you considered going after some of the DDT bombs when they get very low? Like, around the 1:10:00 mark. Not so much for the additional score, but to wipe out some groups of mushrooms and take a little pressure off you.
That's a good strategy that I use sometimes. The most important thing with the mushroom clearing is to keep the green area clear, but preferably lots of mushrooms above it. At the point you mention the ddts were above the green and would not have done much for the green. Also, the next board is the scrolling board, hitting a ddt stops the scrolling movement, so I wanted to keep them available for that board.

I have always wanted the arcade original of millipede. If I could have one cabinet it would be that one custom built with original hardware and software trakball and the like! If you could where did you purchase your machine? And for how much? I would like to get as good as you one day! You seem to be quite the wizard at this wonderful game!

I'll just have to build my own cabinet for it as well as get a monitor for video. However I'm thinking of like a cabaret style of millipede machine and the like would be cool🤔
If you can't find an original Cab at a price you can afford, consider getting an FPGA hardware (ie MiSTER)which will give near identical hardware emulation which is superior to software emulation. With FPGA, you could have several games in a single cab with no comprise in the video game experience. But with that said, its still not like owning the original game because it is not the original no matter how perfect the hardware emulation is.

Do you have any tips to get good? Usually the millipede hits the bottom fast in the later stages and I get overwhelmed too quickly.
Just keep playing, and playing, and playing...until you get better. My current limit is around 600k.

I agree, it's the best arcade game!! I got mine off of eBay. Just make sure it's an original cabinet and not an emulator. Good luck!
