      That is actually the only moment in the show that did not convince me.
      Mrs Dudley is portrayed as Christian. One strong enough in her belief that she has to be stopped from witnessing to the kids. Why would someone who believes in an afterlife in paradise in the presence of their god, chose to die in a place where her spirit is trapped with the ghosts of her children instead? In limbo for as long as the House stands. That would be only slightly better than hell.

    Fun fact: Luke was supposed to die at the end of the show. The scene where he's blowing out the '2 years sober' candle was originally going to be hinted that it was happening in the red room by featuring the red room window on the wall behind and using red icing on the cake. But then the director decided it was too sad so he covered up the window with photo frames and made it a happy ending where he lives.

    • @jmwild1
      @jmwild1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +127

      Luke did die, but he was revived by Nell and pulled from death (from his "awake" state). I would think that something supernatural was keeping Luke going till they could at least get him to the hospital.

    Nell's monologue makes me cry everytime I hear it. "I loved you completely and you loved me the same, that's all. The rest is confetti." That hit me so hard. Hard enough that I have 'The rest is confetti' included in my Haunting of Hill House tattoo.

  • @PB_and_Jenny
    @PB_and_Jenny 5 ปีที่แล้ว +704

    I will never not cry over the fact that Nellie was the one who truly woke up her siblings. Ugh. My heart.
    Also. One subtle touch that I don’t know if it was intentional but I’m sure it was because nothing in this show seems to be coincidental. But I thought it was pure poetry that Poppy was the one forcing the kids to see their nightmares and that she was the one who manipulated Olivia. She was “poisoning” their thoughts, if you will. Poppies are poisonous. I don’t know. I just thought that was genius.

    • @taylorallgood5078

    • @taylorallgood5078
      @taylorallgood5078 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      It may be a coincidence, but one the show writers noticed and took advantage of. I read the book years ago, so my memory might not be reliable, but I think Poppy Hill was part of the legend of Hill House. I don't remember anyone in the novel having a heroin or opioid addiction (could be wrong), but maybe the show's writers came up with that connection based on the name. Interesting observation for sure.

      Luv2Dnce4 this show had SO many subtleties to it. Like when Olivia falls backwards in episode 9. It’s almost an exact mimic of Theo falling in episode 3. Both are “in” Shirley’s mortuary, both near Nellie, both got scared, both fall from right to left with their knees bent up. It sounds ridiculous but if you watch those bits again, it’s uncanny.
      I freaking LOVE this show.

Just the idea of someone truly loving their lord, who they believe in completely, and take all their comfort and peace from and want to dedicate their life to - but choosing to turn away from the comfort and peace of that belief to be with your child in a horrible place... it's humbling. Regardless of whether "heaven" is real in the universe of HH, Mrs. Dudley believed she was turning away from eternal love and paradise to make sure Abigail wasn't alone. That's a strong heart on that woman.

    I think Nell had to die because out of all the 5 stages of grief she represents acceptance. She listened to her siblings and was there for them she also was the youngest and most vulnerable one who saw it all and was the most impacted by the house. I don't think any of the other siblings could of brought them together except for Nell. Still so tragic.

  • @srae1971

    I feel like Olivia and Nell weren't "meant" to be there, it's just that they were the most susceptible. In the beginning Olivia talks about being sensitive and seeing the ghosts there, but that made her especially vulnerable to the house, and then once it got her she worked on the rest of the kids. Nellie and Luke were the most damaged by the house. Nellie was just unlucky, I think. The thing that I found really really interesting is that Hugh didn't seem to have a version of the Red Room.

      I think all the women in their family have powers. Remember the story Liv told the mom while they were cleaning up the glass. And the conversation she had with theo when she gave her the gloves. That the women in her family are "sensitive" and she wondered if her other daughters were "sensitive". I think Luke got it worse than his brother and dad cause of the twin thing.

  • @neonoires
    @neonoires 5 ปีที่แล้ว +341

    This episode was so emotionally draining but in a good way. Nell's speech, Hugh's explanation, and the Dudley's over Steven's narration broke me down. I think Hugh's red room was mostly being obsessed with fixing the house. The house took up his time while it fed on his wife and kids. I think Olivia explained it best with the kite and the string. He was the one who took the rest of the "meal" away from the house back in 1992. Theo also explained her stance on things. She's always been in the middle-Steven and Shirley didn't want to believe it and Luke and Nell were so consumed by what happened that it essentially ruined their lives. Theo sort of saw both sides and then went and did her own thing and coped as best as she could. I think her stage of grief was meant to be bargaining. She did a lot of talking herself down whenever she was scared of something. Nell was just the first sibling to get taken by the house, I believe it would have happened to all of them eventually. I also appreciate how you guys didn't dump all over Steven and Shirley like other reactors do. I think Shirley stepped as the mother figure when Olivia died and Hugh sort of went off on his own. She was the one who took on all of their problems. She was the one who always answered Nell's calls (except the one time she was at work), she paid for Luke to get rehab, she let Theo live with her, and she has children of her own so I can imagine she'd have a bit of a complex. Steven is the oldest and their dad sort of ditched with no explanation so he was angry/in denial. I think they were both very human in their responses to what happened.

    • @neonoires
      @neonoires 5 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      ^^ Responding here because this comment is long enough. What I like about Theo is the fact that she listened. She never shut down Luke and Nell but she also didn't berate Shirley and Steven constantly. Also while she didn't like being touched and was seen as the "angriest" she was always the most understanding to her siblings in my opinion. She had her moments but I just think it's funny how the one who didn't like physical touch could level with everyone without judgement. Except when she heard about Nell's suicide but she just heard the news so she was angry.

    The way they give so much depth to the characters is outstanding, honestly you just fall in love with luke and nell even knowing from the beginning that she dies. They’re all victims after all and the house keeps them as trophies. Olivia was very susceptible to what was going on, so was Nell and they both accepted it. Luke was more scared and Theo just kept to herself. Ghosts were real but the pain the characters were going through made them more “easy” to bring back

    I'm not ashamed of admitting it but that episode make me cry my life out, it was so much to process in the same time and I'm kind of sensitive. But this show is SO well made and just wow !! What a way to finish a show, all the missing puzzle peaces take there place one by one and my jaw was closer and closer to the floor. That was by far one of the best show I ever watch and thank you so much to react on it !! You make my cry again dammit 😅😅😅

    The shot where you see Olivia and Nell hugging Hugh and their faces over his shoulders slightly…. Nell looks truly happy to have her father with her and to know her siblings are safe, and Olivia still looks so full of rage and anger and pain at having to let her children go…. It’s so chilling.

    As a parent, this show hits so hard with the idea of keeping your kid's safe. The house's influence warped that idea to make Olivia "scattered"; it tricked her into making her think that the only way to keep her kids safe was by death. The house does this as a means to feed it through the consumption of souls. This last episode made me come undone and weep with the explanations, the dialogue and monologues, Huge's sacrifice for his kids, and how Nell truly saved her siblings as seen at the end. This show is much more than horror, it is complex, non-linear, and blends psychology and horror together with beautiful cinematography, a tremendous script, and an amazing cast. This show is everything you could want in a show and I love it even though it breaks my heart. Great reaction, guys 💙

    Nellie is acceptance

    • @ianwestc

      I never got that. I mean, yes, I know this was the intentional trope Flanaga put in here, but Shirley as bargaining and Theo as anger seem completely swapped. None of them seemed 'bargaining,' Shirley was, by far, the angriest. Theo was more 'passion to cover up the dead feeling inside' which feels more like 'bargaining' than what Shirley was doing, for sure.

      The stages correlate with the order of ages of the kids. i.e the oldest is the first stage.

Just when you think you have it together there is a twist. You really didn’t know what was going to happen. Who was real and what was real. Then you take all of that and watch your reaction, it’s a great time. I hope they make more but they set the bar high for the others.

      My argument is to NOT ruin this show by making other seasons of it... It was a work of art as is, please don't ruin this Mona Lisa by trying to copy it... Leave it alone and let it be it a 1 season show... You devalue the message by trying to cookie cutter it like AHS has ruined itself... And yes, AHS is crap now... It was good, but tried to duplicate the greatness it had from it's first season and has failed ever since... I don't want this show to be destroyed like AHS was...

      Bill Stephens, yes. Look at the garbage that is 13RW season 2. (I haven’t even seen S1 but everyone I know says S2 is trash). Someone needs to tell networks & Netflix that producing one-off mini series is okay. Actors don’t deserve to be tied down for 5+ years unless it’s a real good long running book adaptation.
      Ps, AHS was always meant to be a longterm show (9 levels of hell). It had the formula to be great. The fault lies w Murphy & his mediocre writing.

    Always wondered why Hugh never saw inside the Red Room ... then I remembered he was obsessed with fixing things ... fixing The House ... The House robbed him of that desire his entire stay there - He couldn’t fix The Red Room’s Door. The House tormented the others in different ways and this was his torment. It didn’t need him inside The Red Room to torment him. The House takes great delight in tormenting and creating a situation FOREVER.

    I watched this show third time recently and noticed an amazing detail. Olivia's dress dramatically changes as the days go by. We saw in ep9 when family first entered the house, Olivia's outfit was way modern than the ones we have been seeing from ep1. I mean, Mrs Dudley outfit (the blue one when she says the world is cruel and all) in that statue room was one of the most modern outfits in the show (I really like how Mrs Dudley was shown as an angel when she was standing just in front of the angel statue with wings at her shoulders) Olivia's outfits were matching with the wallpapers of the house honestly. At one moment I even noticed how her gown was exactly same green pattern as the wall behind her. She was literally melting into the house...

    I think most things in the story are both real within the story, and also symbolic for the watcher. Like Theo's powers are real within the story, but for the viewers they're more symbolic of being an empath or even just generally trying to balance how much you get involved with the outside world and let it affect you vs how much you close yourself up for your own peace of mind. Similar with Luke's addiction. For Luke the top hat guy is the literal reason for his addiction while for the viewer he could be symbolic for addiction and the way it always follows you and creeps up in the especially stressful moments.

The 'I loved you completely and you loved me the same' for some reason gets to me every single time. Because in the end, love is all that matters. Nellie was the purest soul and yet she was the one who suffered the most and had no one to save her at the end yet she saved everyone. If that's not love I don't know what love is then.
    Hugh's 'You and your sisters and your brother are my biggest pride' (or something along those lines) also made me bowl. Something about the father-child thing there hit home.

    Nell's final words to her siblings and that whole scene were so perfect and really hit me. I watched this episode while finding out about a loss of someone I knew and it was something on my mind while dealing with it.
    I don't know if you guys would be into movies to watch but A Monster Calls has a few similarities to this although it's a kids movie. I would love to see ye react to it.
    I have loved watching your reactions to this show. I got sucked into several of your reactions not too long ago and it has been so fun. So thank you for all you guys do. 😁

    i'd like to point out how whenever they're in the red room (both as kids and in the "dreams" of this last episode), there's a red element. it's so smart i could die

    nellie is the one that was meant to bring them all back together and to do that she had to die, it was the only way. that's why she tells steve that he couldn't have changed anything if he'd done things differently. the bent neck lady is proof that she was always meant to die like that. it's so sad but it's the way it was supposed to happen.

    That final scene with Nell talking to them all in the red room gets me everytime and the part when they show Hue with Olivia and Nell does as well and yes even the part where the Dudleys are in the house now with the wife and her two kids as well. That music is amazing as well and makes it even more sad. Such a wonderful show Mike is a master of horror and emotional minipulation and I respect him for it.
