    I love my 257 Weatherby! I have two loadings for it. A 92 gr Hammer Hunter with RL-22 at 3888 FPS and the 110 gr Accubond at 3500 FPS. Both loadings are sub Half MOA.

      I have 2. It is an awesome cartridge if loaded with the new propellants. I favor the 155 Federal Terminal Ascent. The will between 3,275 and 3,301 FPS! Bullet has a .586 BC.

    • @jefferywilliams7687
      @jefferywilliams7687 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I favor RL 26 and it is not available. The new Ramshot Grand is a great substitute. You can substitute the 154 SST for small deer and antelope. I factory 175 will chronograph over 3,000 FPS.

      It has always amazed me how little folks have a 7mm Weatherby. I have been selling ammo for years and have only sold a handful of boxes for the 7mm.

    • @tgunz64
      @tgunz64 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There is a shop near me that has 1 box of the 7mm on the shelf and he said it’s been there since before Covid. The other day I saw they reduced the price from $105 to $63. Maybe next year I’ll order up a Mark 5 in it. For the price I like the Live Wild model.

    They used a ballistic pendulum to calculate most velocities back then, I’m unsure if there was a radio chronograph at that time but I’ve seen documentaries that talked about random sampling of ammunition in WW2 and they shot a ballistic pendulum with a known weight at a known distance and calculated the speed based off its movement at impact. It’s reasonably accurate but a lot more steps than shooting through a chronograph these days.

    Let me start by saying I’m a Weatherby fan. I’ve owned several of your rifles and currently have 3 in my inventory. I also have a soft spot for my 257 and agree with most of what was said on your podcast. I don’t know that you can pick a cartridge that’s more perfect for open country deer and antelope. Having said that, there’s about a minute of conversation starting at 15:35 that I absolutely do not agree with, specifically around recoil. I have noticed that all of my Weatherby rifles seem to be softer shooting than your competitors offerings in the same chambering, probably because of the stock design and a good recoil pad. The extra weight in the Vanguard also helps tame recoil down quite a bit. My 257 heavier than a lot of rifles out there at near 9 pounds ready to hunt and it is certainly not “super low recoil” or “like a 6.5 Creedmoor… maybe less than”. That’s just silly. In fact, I’d say that 6.5 Creedmoor and other similar rounds are probably 60% of the recoil of the 257 Weatherby. I’m not saying it’s a hard kicker and certainly nothing like 300 Win Mag, etc., but the context of your conversation started with shooters who are smaller and many times more sensitive to recoil than a larger framed and perhaps more experienced shooter (talking about the guy’s wife). I would absolutely not put someone like that behind my 257 or any other rifle of similar recoil (think 270 Win) unless they had been shooting for a while. I do appreciate the comment added by the gentleman in blue about muzzle devices and suppressors as that would tame the rifle down some, but let’s be a little more fair about recoil so someone who doesn’t know any better doesn’t go out and and buy one of these and stick their wife or kid behind it because it’s super low recoil and softer than a 6.5. There’s no free lunch… to get the speed, there’s going to be recoil. I’ll buy comfortable to shoot or moderate recoil, but super low or soft… nope.

    74 grains of H1000, 92 grain HH’s, 400 yard zero. Taken all my three of my elk at 400 yards on, and all my antelope out to 600 yards.

    When Weatherby set up its chat room (Weatherby Nation), some of the early members convinced Weatherby to create a special rifle for the Weatherby Nation members. They agreed to build a unique Vanguard rifle chambered in .257 Weatherby magnum that would be sold only to members, and I suspect they thought they be able to sell a bunch of them. However, only twelve members ordered one. I was one of those members, so I have one-of-twelve special Vanguard rifles, and it is the most accurate rifle I have ever shot, even at extreme distances.

    Just picked up a 257 weatherby specifically for hunting PA whitetail! I hunt pipeline right of ways a lot which is nothing more than a long skinny food plot surrounded by thickets or woods. Often long shots are required and immediate knock down is very beneficial. I used a 300 wby for a while for the same reason but anymore a little less recoil is nice.

    Hi Weatherby staff, can you please do a podcast on the 340 Wby and the 338-378 Wby? These cartridges have been neglected in your entire history of podcasts. So, that you have enough content for a full podcast, you can do the two cartridges together. Thanks!

    First hunting rifle/bolt action I purchased was a Weatherby Vanguard S2 in 257 Weatherby. Been using it for the past decade and it'll hammer a whitetail.

      I will add that around half of the whitetail I’ve shot with mine have ran ~40 yards after being shot through the vitals.

    The 257 Wby Mag aka the Death ☠️ Ray has had my interest for a long time. I wouldn’t mind having one rifle in calibers sizes from 22 all the way up to maybe 🤔 a 375 H&H to compliment my 270 Win and 300 WSM. The 257 Wby Mag is my top choice for 25 cal and my favorite Weatherby cartridge.
    I would have to settle on a right hand rifle in 257 Wby since the least expensive one is an Accumark at $2000. Sadly the Hunter model doesn’t have any lefties. So Vanguard Talon is most likely the winner for a 257 Wby for me at around $1000.

    What is not talked about enough is velocity aids precise bullet placement, both from less wind drift and from less rise or drop from the sight plane. And placement is the game.

      Between the 7 mm rem mag and 7 PRC the 7 mm Weatherby mag is the best just does not get the love it deserves I guess the 270 Weatherby might get a bit more
      To my knowledge (7 mm Weatherby is the original high performance 7 mm )should be the advertising

    Time to put faster twist rifling in your barrels ! Like 1 in 8 for .257wby , same in the 300s . The person who talked about necking down the. 300wby to .257 , have you heard of the 257stw ?? Call Layne Simpson & consult with him . Hope you relative newbies have heard of him . I have loaded for 250savage , 257 Robert's, 25-06 & 257wby over the years . A fast twist 257wby & a 125gr mono metal bullet would provide better performance for elk & even moose ! In the meantime I'll continue loading my 257wby with 120 gr Speer or partition & full case of Retumbo . Cheers & good hunting !

    Also what’s the real same barrel length between 257 and 25-06 what the actual velocity difference is

    • @GuyGooding-q9o
      @GuyGooding-q9o 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My 2 rifles have 24in barrels and my chronograph says the velocity difference is 150 to 200 fps with near max handloads .

    • @gavinrobinson8925
      @gavinrobinson8925 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The difference between them is less so with shorter barrels and more with longer ones, as the weatherby has more powder a usually slower powders given the same bullet weight, so needs more barrel to fully burn in.
