He looked out through a glassless window

Beautiful green fields and dreams

But there was a worry in his heart

How could it come to this?
I'm really worried about living

Then there came a day
Moved out 'cross the Mediterranean
Came to rest on isles and the Greek young men
And with their silver beards they laughed
At the unknown of the universe
They could just sit and guess God's name
But they said
How could it come to this?
We're really worried about living
How could it come to this?
Yeah, we really want to know about this
Is it like today?
Oh, oh-oh
Then there followed days of kings
Empires and revolution
Blood just looks the same
When you open the veins
But sometimes it was faith, power or reason as the cornerstone
But the furrowed brow has never left his face
He said
How could it come to this?
We're really living in a landslide
How could it come to this?
Yeah we really wanna know about this
Is it like today?
Oh, oh-oh
Then there came a day
Man packed up, flew off from the planet
He went to the moon (to the moon)
To the moon (to the moon)
Now he's out in space, hey, fixing all the problems
He comes face to face with God
He says
How could it come to this

health challenges/aneurysm, etc. At least I got to see WP do two great live shows in my lifetime.
One of my favourite World Party songs in my collection. The Worlds going to miss you Karl. RIP
me & my bf have been searching for this for weeks we totally forgot who sang it we had these lyrics ,”many years ago hey” and how did it come to this” lol that’s all we remember ( old age now) and finally at 5am this morning I found it I can’t wait to show him ( isn’t life exciting, lol) it’s been playing on me for weeks because it reminds me of my bf this song is quite haunting
90s played awesome music. I was in my 20s. I'm 52 now
Must admit i prefered the 80s, but my god, what a banging tune from world party. Songs of this calibre do the 90s proud.❤💯👍
Absolutely gutted... 😢😢😢 RIP Karl
A truly magnificent piece of work. Many others too which are testament to the writing and music from a much missed guy. Fondly remembered early waterboys gigs and just the one solo concert. Thank you for having those memories and musical wonders. Still listening and lovin his music. Thank you Karl.
First heard this in a foreign students' dorm Beijing in 1994. Don't know how I found it but I loved it for its melody and wistfulness. Already a quarter of a century....
Been a big WP fan for ages but i came to realize recently that this is unequivocally my favourite World Party Song and... may actually be my all time #1 favourite song ever. Its absolutely brilliant.
Karl was a phenomenal talent who has inspired countless musicians and listeners.
Thanks 🙏 this is a great song
