- In this video we give you a tour of this fantastic 1971 Dodge Challenger 340 convertible. It is owned by a customer of ours Daniel and his Dad bought it brand new in 1971. He even traded in a 1969 Dodge Super Bee for it, he liked his muscle cars. What makes this so unique is the options it has, it is absolutely loaded. Power windows, hi impact Hemi Orange paint, AM/FM radio, power steering with the quick ratio TA box, front chrome trim, belt moldings, white bucket seat interior, column shift interestingly, didn't get the console, rallye dash, etc, etc. This is not a Challenger R/T, you could not get a Challenger R/T convertible in 1971 so this was the only way you could get a performance engine in a 1971 Challenger convertible. The 340 package came with the rallye hood with front and rear sway bars and makes this one very special.
We have had the privilege to do a bunch of work to this one. We LOVE taking cars in that need a bunch of work, that barely run, that nothing works on and getting them to be reliable drivers. Seeing the smile on a customers face when they get the car back and everything works is always totally work it. Hope you enjoy the video!
Also note - although close and it was probably ordered because of it this is NOT an Indianapolis 500 convertible. Was ordered new in Michigan but is not one of the 50 ordered because of the race.
What a beauty! Absolute perfection! ❤
Great to drive too.
My first car in 79 was a 73 Cuda, 318, slapstick, it was a really fun ride, I can imagine a 340 Chally setup like that would just be a blast! Beauty ride!
Super fun to drive
Nice car , was never a luggage rack fan , but for some reason it works well on this Challenger 😊. Great story also
Like then on a 70 charger too.
That awesome car was produced on my 11th birthday. Really nice job on the restoration Tom, Jamie Evan and Trev.
Birthday cars are fun!
Great car. I love the story and history. So cool!
Thanks for watching!
What an Awesome car...mines yellow and built afew days before this one
Do u have that rebodied bondo gold car?
NOPE @@apatheticempathy
Definition of beauty in car form..
I had a 1970 340 Dart Swinger. 340s go-go fo sho-sho.
340’s are great engines
Man that’s beautiful!! And very Cool !!
🎉I had a light blue 1973 convertible, 1 of 1.

I have a JH27N0B 70 Challenger convertible and the engine is painted correct corporate blue. Like with late 71 340s, you get people who will argue with you all day that the engine should be painted hemi orange.
JH27 is a standard "not R/T" Challenger convertible. 383 4 barrel was largest engine available without getting an R/T. The 383 was rated 5 hp less than the 383 in an R/T.
I often wonder why Plymouth got the Hemi Cuda convertible but Dodge did not get an R/T convertible in 1971. But I guess it didn't matter to much because the Hemi Cuda convertible is very rare.
They just were selling that many.
Cool car. Great story. My parents would have never let me even park in their driveway if it was their car lol. Let alone drive it! Good info on this one!!!
In 1984 I bought a 71 Challenger convertible for $2200. 318 automatic.
Beautiful car! Awesome history and some incredible options.
Thanks!
Starting cars and letting them idle with the door open is hard on door pins and bushings. Different car for sure. You guys do great work. Thanks for sharing.
What a beauty!
Thanks Tom! Awesome! Stay safe on the road bruddah!
Sweet ride
Beautiful car! Thanks for the tour and the education.
That's SUPER nice, although I would prefer Goodyear Polyglas tires.
Ya have discussed tires with the owner and think we are doing that next year. Might go radials however.
Actually, no one moved "the cone" before the Indy 500. According to the Indy newspapers, Eldon Palmer had placed a flag on pit row to denote where he would decelerate if the race started, or go back onto to the track if it were a "false start." On race day the huge crowd in the pits blocked the flag from his view. The rest is history, he braked late. I have one of the track cars, documented by Eldon Palmer. Mine has a 318, which I almost converted to a 340 when I purchased it many years ago. But, decided to keep it original. This one is a beautiful car! It certainly has many options which were not put on the Pace Cars, to make them affordable for the four dealers who purchased the fifty cars. Thanks for the video. Anyone can find mine on TH-cam, with a simple search.
Pretty sure I saw your video.
@@rocketresto Thanks for the reply. Eldon had shared info with me on the phone about my car, so many years ago. Love the luxury options on yours. :)
Beautiful
I love that column automatic, you can still power brake
E bodies with that crash can have a very unique angle on the column shifter, you don’t see it much.
Tom, thanks for the in-depth tour, great job!
Thanks for watching!
That is a good looking car!
One of our favorite customer cars!
72 exhaust manifold on dr.side.
Is it? Need to check that. 71-72 is the same manifold just different date codes.
I find fender tags & vin's really interesting. Doesn't need to be a Hemi (unless K-9) ʕ·ᴥ·ʔ You go through Auction cars (i luv ) on what's correct. MORE PLEASE & pat Hemi ✌️
Did they have a interior color package for the 71 convertible??? 👍🏻 Love the knowledge ✌🏻👍🏻💯
A special car with a great history....love the 71s. Is the jack assembly on this car the one with the hook or the '72-'74 that slots into the notch in the bumper? There seems to be some confusion about the originality of late production 71 E-body cars and the notched bumpers (commonly seen on '72-'72 E-bodies). I've only seen one other late build '71 Challenger with the notched bumpers but have never seen pics of a late built '71 'Cuda/Barracuda with the notched bumpers. Have you seen a late built '71 'Cuda with the notched bumpers that was verified to have left the factory with them? My '71 Cuda 340-4sp has an SPD of 6/26/71 and a door sticker showing July '71. It has the notched bumpers front and rear.
Yes have seen a late cuda with the slots. The Challenger came with the separate hook jack, don’t think they went to the 72 style till 72 but could be wrong about that.
@@rocketresto Thanks Tom. That's what I suspected.
There is an E- Body bench seat listed on eBay right now. Probably came out of a car like this.
Not many bench seats in e bodies
Nice car but I think I'd rather have the 383 version .
With the short wheelbase of an e body I really like the 340. Yes they don’t have the same torque but a much more balanced car.
@@rocketrestoYes. 340 small block all the way in a light car. I like to drive, not just go in a straight line.😎
I just realized that the old jacks had to be specific to the bumper contour with the slot they avoided that
My 67 Pontiac tempest had the slot type but dad's 67 valiant didn't
Ya GM did it a lot earlier than Mopar, makes sense from a production standpoint you don’t have to carry 20 different hooks for every car in the line up.
HE TRADED A SUPERBIRD?.....
AND 4300....!!!
ANDFOLKS.... YEAH RIGHT....TO GET THAT CAR THESE DAYS....MULTIPLY BY 20
he could bring it to Barrett Jackson and.....WATCH THE COLLECTORS BEAT EACH OTHER BRAINS OUT OVER IT ...I bet he could get 200k for it
He traded a Super Bee not a Superbird
@@rocketresto OK... I was about to say really?
I know they suffered from Edselitis back in the day...and a lot of the dealers took the wing and the noses off and sold them as regular chargers and roadrunners
Beautiful car! My Dad ordered a new 1971 Plymouth "Cuda" 340 with the Hockey Stick decal, Power Steering/Brakes/Windows/Top, 5-spoke Rallye Wheels, (same on this Challenger), White with Black Leather, a Black Convertible Top, and Console with floor shift automatic when he came home from the Air Force. He still has the car and it is gorgeous, with 58,000 original miles. I would love to see the Barracuda come back, but unfortunately, Chrysler is owned by an Evil Entity, AGAIN!
That is awesome!! The story, the car, everything.
The Indy crash Tom mentions:
