- You probably don't outright lie on a regular basis. But, do you exaggerate? Do you give half truths sometimes, or leave things unclear on purpose? Do you hide some facts in order to smooth things over?
Today, Fr. Mike shows us the very-human reasons we all struggle with these "white lies", and how to tell the "full" truth more often.

@@Call_Upon_YAH we pray to Jesus through his mother. This is evidenced in how we pray. We ask our Lord for Mercy and ask the Blessed Virgin Mary to pray for us. All our prayers and litanies are written in this way. The commandments tell us to honour our parents. Jesus made Mary our Mother as one of his final acts on the Holy Cross. It is right therefor that we show her respect and honour but Catholics do not worship her. God bless you and thank you for sharing Scripture extracts. I hope my simple explanation above helps you understand the way we Catholics give honour and adore the Lord Our God.

Sometimes i lie to not hurt someone.. or to not stress someone 🙏🏼🙏🏼 and i know it’s wrong

When you are tempted to lie to protect a third party's reputation, you can honestly say that you're trying to gossip less and ask to change the subject. You could alternatively suggest the person you're speaking with get the news directly from the third party in question.
@OfficialProJustice it’s sometimes easier said than done esp dealing with a person who easily offended and you want to protect feelings i just try and say nothing it’s complicated but i keep praying 🙏🏼
@OfficialProJusticeI can tell you’re very young. It is not loving to hurt people by giving a blunt truth, rather than couching it in loving language or avoiding certain topics. In addition, one’s opinion is rarely the truth. Facts are truth.
There's one situation in which it may not be so culpable to lie, and that is when it's a safety or survival issue. If you're in an abusive situation and the truth could get you injured or worse.....and I can tell you many people are in such situations.
Thanks for this, Fr. Mike - I’ve confessed little white lies before - the kind that you are talking about - the ones that slip out without you giving any forethought. it is very embarrassing and humbling to realise how small I am at 63 years old ! Your talk provided clarity though - pointing to the reasons why we might do these things. No wonder a lot of the saints didn’t speak unnecessarily!
My life would be easier if I shut my mouth
I have a journal where I work out my confession. I started giving a page to each sin I commit and then write what reason I felt I had for committing the sin. Helps me figure out what I seem to think I'm getting out of them.

It’s usually **easier** to beg forgiveness than to ask permission, but it’s usually not **better**.
Father Mike Schmitz, It must be very hard to openly admit these flaws to preach this video, but I want to let everyone know that this transparency is very brave and should be encouraged for the good things it does and the lessons that you teach be clear to live by. You really know what to say to get us thinking and reflecting, and this is yet another great example!

Awesome video, really helpful! These "white lies" almost always become gateway sins to even bigger sins too. Better to shoot high in telling the whole truth and nothing but truth and end up doing an average job of it, than to be less than clear and factual and fall low into the territory of lies and false witness. Lots of people have this struggle and those that don't are blessed. Also it must be summer in the north at last - you have a tan!

And I say NO it was not weird. I can’t speak for anyone else but I’ve told many little untruths just to make myself look better when it probably doesn’t matter to the person I’m talking to. As you reminded us, Jesus said, “let your yes be your yes and your no be your no anything other is from the evil one.”
Next time you say how many triathlons you have done, tell them 2 and a 1/3. Anyone would ask about the 1/3. Or simply tell them 2 and trained for 3rd but was injured. You deserve credit for that (almost 3rd).
Thank you Fr. Mike, you have given me a lot to think about. Being as honest as we can possibly be is a freeing feeling.
Besides, it means more that people like me for exactly who I am. I hope this is a feeling for many others as well. Amen.
1st. Unfortunately I tell
sometimes lies and it hurts me 💔 but the truth is better. But when it comes to people I really care about and I tell them the truth, why do they say things that hurt. I do care about them 100%! And I have someone in my heart that I can’t unlove. It’s hard for me😔
So they say hurtful things in response to you telling them truthful things? Some truths don’t need to be known by others. Ask yourself this: are the truthful things you tell them **likely** to cause their negative response, and is it necessary to tell them?

I think it’s easier to say, “I have to leave,” instead of “I want to leave,” because “have to” allows for a multitude of reasons outside of yourself, and not just your desire to get away from that person. Pretty hard to NOT insult someone by saying “I want to leave,” and giving NO reason why. Always have plenty of legitimate reasons to not be where you currently are.
Or you could just say "I'll go" and leave it open.
Just be honest. You should say I want to get away from you now. It was fun but you are starting to annoy me so I want to leave while we are still friends.

I agree with your assessment on why we lie, even little lies like your example. But one reason I do this is because I have always been a people pleaser, so I put a good "face" on something. Even if it something stupidly simple. I also agree that we lie about small things because we do want to look good/talented/smart etc. to others.
I am working on changing this to BE more authentic.
Having said all of that, I also agree that everyone doesn't need to know everything you think, at the moment when you think it.

One goo thing to remember is that silence can also be a good way to avoid white lies in some situations. Not everything needs to be talked about with everyone. Especially when it's something that could lead to the sin of gossip if it's talked about too much.
Honesty is the best policy. Especially being honest with yourself. And honesty with others keeps us accountable for our actions.

I tell white lies all the time or I exaggerate a little bit to get my point across x I need to stop this. I also find myself maybe exaggerating a story to comfort people. I'll find another way cos all lies big or small are negative x

Father Mike Schmitz is a really cool person. I love his funny intros from the beginning they are cool. The reason I liked him because my family and I watched his Mass videos on TH-cam and is cool as well so that’s how I got into this.

Thank you Father Mike for being transparent. Before my conversion, thie concept of transparency was sometimes preached in evangelical circles. It keeps one in boundaries of right decisions, knowing that we are tied to Truth. And the honesty about failures is freedom ❤
Once again Fr. Patrick touches the heart with his powerful sermon. When I think of those people who were family and friends and have passed away, I don't necessarily think that they might be in need of prayer rather than just my tears of missing them. Saying a prayer or praying the Holy Rosary for them can turn tears to joy. HOPE meaning Help Other People Everywhere can include the holy souls. Thank you Fr. Patrick for your mission of HOPE.

I am a culprit of this unfortunately. I do it when I don’t want to go somewhere and pretend I have other plans not to hurt someone’s feelings! I just don’t feel like going. :(
I would say staying home and doing nothing should count as other plans. As an introvert, I frequently feel misunderstood by extroverts who don't understand my need for time on the calendar that doesn't involve social plans. For me, 2020 was a good year, absolutely amazing. I finally felt like I could keep up with life, but unfortunately it's back to the races.
Fr. Mike, Honesty is the best policy but telling a white lie to avoid hurting someone means something to me.

Many times I've had to delete texts and start over bc I was "white" LYING about things, and seems to be mostly like your example, Father (not completing triathlons, though, that'd be a big ole fish tale! Lol), but generally boasting in a way or trying to make myself out to be better than I really am.
For me it's a battle with pride and can be super tough.
But, I can surely praise the Father, Son & the Holy Spirit and all His wonderful helpers that guide me to followthe truth, the way and the life of Jesus, daily.

This is a great video because many times I tell white lies but sometimes they just come out. And as of for the “I got to go” I do think saying “I want to go” can offend others, so I try to say “it was nice talking to you” or something if that sort.

Father Mike, I have English as second language and yet I find this very truth and helpfull, But I also like to say that there is been situation in my life that I sence strongly that the other party isn't really either interested in knowing the complete truth then saddenly we say not a lay but rather an incomplete statement to such parties witout even thinking it? and after you have said whatever the case could b, you realized that you were right, and proof is that the person comes back with a poor view of the what you said where it didn't even filled that level of truth given just as I had expected from begining and then on the second chance, I rephrase the whole statement of info and develope a level of understanding to where I could be understood and finally said it all, I am not consider my self a lier but rather filling the necessary gap for the time been and hoping to have a second chance to complete it, almost merely onpurpose based on the sence of persection from other party. Please! tell me if I do wrong?

I struggle with this a lot... I tend to omit a little key detail when I used to ask my parents permission to do something. Mostly as a defence mechanism when I knew lying was better than the 3 hour punishment.
I think people ask too many personal questions because they are nosy so I won't be completely honest. "Are you close to your family?" They don't need to know I have gone no contact to protect my kids from highly abusive people so they get "As close as I can be".
