I saw Davy Jones when I attended an oldies concert at Westbury Music Fair on Long Island, New York. My friend was singing in one of the oldies groups that night and got an autographed 8x10 photo of him for me. I’ll treasure it always. I’ve loved Davy since day one and am still saddened by his passing. 💜
I like it that they are the Monkees no matter which combination of the four are in concert. That is never done, but these guys loved each other so much that it somehow works.....!
Pete always reminded me of a former school colleague with a very similar sense of humour. One day four of my class members were re enacting a Monkees song and needless to say, Peter Tori was “played by said friend... (also named Peter!)
Still miss Davy & Peter. I was lucky enough to see them - minus Nesmith - in concert, years ago. I remember just how funny they were. Peter especially had a great sense of humor, more than he had shown in interviews.
Even though Micky only learned to be a drummer for the purpose of The Monkees, I've got to say that he was a subconscious template for me when I first started playing music (wanting to be a singing drummer).
Did you ever see the video of them being interviewed in Australia in the 60s during their tour? The security team reacted strongly when a young woman ran up on stage and started tugging on Davy's hair? I believe Peter and Micky got up to check and see how she was doing
They are just wonderful! Love these guys and their sense of humor! Will always miss Davy ! Wish they all could be around forever , but their show and their music will ALWAYS be popular with every coming generation because there has never been ANYTHING like it, in it's adorable , funny, entertaining way! Davy, Mickey , Mike and Peter are UNIQUELY CHARMING AND TALENTED!! I actually get angry when interviewers ask dumb questions , like "how is it , that this is so popular? They should be required to watch a few episodes of the show BEFORE they interview any of THE MONKEES, so that they can see what gems these guys are! My answer to that question would be , because you can't put that many talented people together and Not come up with a winner! Mickey is so humble and patient and answers these disrespectful questions in such a classy way! A true gracious showman...much like Davy was ( may he rest in peace). Peter and Mickey were so cute , as usual with their special brand of humor!!
It's funny that Micky spent all that time in England working, but he's the one that doesn't understand the lady's accent. He asked her 3 or 4 times what she said. Great guys.
Thank goodness that Mickey is still doing well. Davy Jones died in February of 2012 of massive heart issues. Peter Took died in February of 2019 from throat cancer. Mike Nesmith died on December 10 of 2021 due to heart failure
Why did it get so big? RE RUN POWER, if anyone wants a simple answer it is the power of the re run and then all the other details ring true repeatedly to new generations.
If I could go back in time and leap into another persons body, it would be Peter Tork circa 1968. That guy was a living hedonist. He had a mansion in Laurel, non stop partying, naked women, drugs, booze etc. lol
But because of that life stle, he lost almost all of it and had to sleep in a famous friends- Cosby's- basement afterwards. He had a drinking problem that was so bad, he almost lost it all. Be careful what you wish for, the grass always looks greener on the other side of the fence.
The Beatles broke up after 10 years. John died after. rip... the Monkees fifty years. Davy died while still performing as a Monkee for forty six years RIP Manchester Cowboy. in 2012 all four Monkees were going to tour since the mid 1990’s, but because of Davy’s death it became a memorial tour. John Lennon was well respected and loved and missed. As a fan of The Monkees, it is like losing your favorite brother. You feel like he’s not really gone and that you will see him around the corner. Alas, we never will. In an interview,Peter teared up. They were all brothers, Monkee brothers.
Almost. Micky himself said his father's name was George Dolenz, but his middle name was not "Michael". Therefore, Micky was named after his dad but he's not George Michael Dolenz Jr. Obviously he went by his middle name growing up even though legally his first name is George.
Tim Pennington Micky went by the stage name of Micky Braddock. The first episode credits shows it. The producers wAnted each to use their own name. Mike was performing under the name Michael Blessing. Watch Michael’s audition tape and that is who he introduced himself as.
So if I'm understanding them correctly, they were a "manufactured" band who wanted control of their music, (possibly among other things. At least play their own instruments.) Why didn't the executives let them when they became more successful then executives thought they would be?
By album #9, Changes, they went full circle. It was just like the Kirshner days. In fact, I think it was produced by Jeff Barry if I"m not mistaken just like the first two albums.
Wow, Peter I thought was the young one and to see him at this age so surprise me but he ... and all of them were handsome guys. Peter had that gorgeous dimple. I didn't picture him at all into drugs I think I remember something about that, I don't consider Pot a drug cause I never did anything more than that and I believe that is enough and don't try anything else. I guess watching other ppl making an idiot or loosing their teeth and their entire life on HARD stuff is a waste. Just smoke a joint and laugh and that's cool enough. It should be legalized because then there would be less suicides and when you spend so much time to yourself like having drama rape disorder and being sexually abused as a child and you can't sleep for days cause all this just chokes your mind, screaming and kicking at night of nightmares and I really believe this relieves it.
Well, he was. It's amazing that he continued to go out as long as he did. I read his last performance was in 2017, and he passed in February, 2019. So sad. Cancer, once again.
On the other hand, Micky is a real PITA when he's constantly "ON". I've only seen him play straight in one interview, this about his memories of Davy. No jokes, no goofy voices, just Micky being an honest person.
I think he was a temperamental artist which isn't that unusual, but I read where someone in the liner notes of his 1994 solo album Stranger Things Have Happened alluded to the fact that he was autistic although undiagnosed over most of his adult years. Whatever, he was funny and quirky, and I wouldn't want him any other way. RIP, Peter. You brought us all a lot of joy.
Its because he has autism and we find it hard to start talking again after being interrupted. He was on a train of thought and micky sort of stopped it by making his joke so I think at that point Peter was just like oh well I've said enough. Probably not that bitter about it, just a normal autistic response to being interrupted.
Davy was my favorite but I don't feel that way! It's not like the rest of them kicked Davy out. I am sure they miss him, too. It was the four of them that made the Monkees, not just Davy.

Peter Tork was the most talented musician of the group and taught Mickey Dolenz to play the drums when he was given the role of drummer on the show. Mike Nesmith said that Peter Tork was a huge part of why their first independent album "Headquarters" was so successful. He was also a very popular member of the group and had a huge following, just as much as the others did. Davy and Mickey were actors when the show started while Mike and Peter were musicians, and the group became successful because of the music and the show. He also toured with Mickey and Davy for years so he was very much a part of their later success as well. I have read in comment threads that Peter was always very generous to their fans and took the time to talk to them, which didn't always happen with the other members.
I love peter, too andhe was an indispensible part of the group! Nothing would have happened big if these 4 had not been cast- they had chemistry and charisma together- together, they had the IT factor!

I think Mike had a big part in this as he never liked Peter and said Peter never liked him. I don't know how true that was. If you notice, here as in many other interviews, Micky takes the ball and runs with it. Peter is lucky to get in a few words here and there. And you are very wrong, many, many fans are on board with him.
RIP Pete. He looked good for 73 here.
So sad we lost Peter:( Long live The Monkees!!
Love these guys. Met Peter and he is tremendously talented and funny. Time more than well spent.
Peter was such a sweet man
RIP Peter. I grew up watching their tv show and loving their music. ❤
That show was so much wonderful fun to watch! I sure will miss Peter!
Peter! You don’t look goofy! You look happy to be there!
What a pleasure to see two (obviously VERY intelligent) great guys.
Kudos and good luck to both of you.

Love Micky's personality, such a funny guy
This is GREAT. Thank you for posting it. The Monkees are my favorite.
I saw them when they played here in Shreveport. I was so young. Good memories.
Takes me back to a happy time.

Interviewer: Mike is writing his memoirs. Worried about any stories that might come out? Cheeky stories?
Peter: No...the more salacious the better.
Pete always reminded me of a former school colleague with a very similar sense of humour. One day four of my class members were re enacting a Monkees song and needless to say, Peter Tori was “played by said friend... (also named Peter!)
RIP, Peter. There are 58 total episodes of the series, 32 in Season 1 & 26 in Season 2.
Watched their show so much growing up in St. Louis, MO. Now it’s down to one. Micky.
Still miss Davy & Peter. I was lucky enough to see them - minus Nesmith - in concert, years ago. I remember just how funny they were. Peter especially had a great sense of humor, more than he had shown in interviews.
This group basically inspired me to start singing old rock and roll/pop classics!
Great interview!

ShreadTheWeapon As Dolenz has said numerous times in interviews ' Learning the Drums isn't rocket science'
Peter's hair he looks like he just woke up he's adorable
Nothing's changed in 50 years
So sad to have now lost a second Monkee. 💜💜
Wasn't he great? Miss him!
I loved the show. so funny. will buy the bluray
Peter was nice, came to us silly girls waiting on the sidewalk. The rest of them looked at us by like we were fools. Downtowner motel.
OMG, how I love that man! Brainy, charming, witty, talented, handsome. SIGH!

Just loved The Monkees when l was young. Brill tv.
Micky is a great comic and singer!
Och Micky. I love you. Cuddles.
This interview was too short !!
Love me some Monkees.
The door into summer.
The Monkees were the First Mtv !
Dspeir actually, I think Paul Revere and the Raiders were the first group to make music videos for Dick Clark.
Actually... MTV happened because of Mike Nesmith. He had the idea for a 24/7 Music network. He sold the idea and voila!
The better MTV without all the masonic crap
The Beatles - 1966 Paperback Writer/Rain was the first music video used to promote.
No, it was monkees first.
Micky's hearing is starting to fade. Age and a lot of loud music will do it every time.
Jim Scrogham For quite a while now. At conventions, he often can’t make out a question or comment and turns to Peter often.
As any good actor/singer, he's taken great care of his voice.
I thought he was having trouble with her thick accent.
