There’s a setting for throwing Poké Balls in battle. You can turn off the dialogue box asking for confirmation. Makes it a lot more fluid

You don’t have to use a ball in battle through the menu just press ZR to throw one if the ball is in your hand. That being said you will be asked if you want to confirm the ZR press but you can also turn that off so it just uses the ZR press immediately with zero confirmation message

I knew about the throw and confirmation, but i didn't know it could be turned off... You just made my game faster.
I knew that but i still prefer to go in the menu haha. Actually Jon figured it out at 16:40, he pressed ZR to use pokeball.

On the voice acting, I would have to agree. At least have voice acting for major story dialog. Doesn't have to be for every single side quest or anything like that but for important main story cut scenes it would be most welcome.

@@michaelballack3051 I can see where you're going with that, and honestly either one sounds cool, but, lets be real here... Mewtwo is the main legendary for this one, lol.
Plus it would make more sense since the whole story would be based around the creation of Mewtwo. But then again these Legends games look like they will only take place in the past/pre region, so perhaps it would be the origin of Mew and how it's DNA was eventually found, etc.
Even though Mewtwo is my favorite pokemon, my favorite Gen is Gen 5, so I'm most excited for a Legends Kyurem game. Seeing Kyurem take its true full form as it once was is something I always wanted to see. It's considered the most powerful dragon pokemon to exist, but put it next to pokemon like Dialga, Eternatus, or Rayquaza, it doesn't really live up to the hype. I wanna see what makes Kyurem the most powerful dragon ever.
I'd also love to finally see a pokemon with 3 types. Since Reshiram and Zekrom once were part of Kyurem, it must have had more than 2 types like Dragon/Fire/Electric.
what about the story of Ho-Oh and the beasts! we could finally find out what they were before they died in that fire
We definitely need a fully voice acted Pokémon game. Imagine if all the NPCs had different dialogues and random interactions like in other RPGs

Voice acting in the Pokemon games would make me feel more immersed, and more connected to the characters for sure. Even if they were Japanese only Voice Actors with English (or your personal language) subtitles, just hearing the characters actually talking would feel a heck of alot better
Pokémon is the largest media franchise in the world. There is no excuse for them to not VO in many languages.

Been playing it since last night. Definitely has some graphical trip ups with pop ins and stuff but gameplay is quite enjoyable. I hope gen 9 has these elements in it.

Yeah I notice some pop ins as well and the water graphics are not great in my opinion jaja...but I really don't buy pokemon games for the graphics.
I would honestly be happy if they did all the games in this style. The EL system and mint for nature changing that replaced IVs and EVs lets any Pokemon become perfect. That's so much better. The main series games felt so terrible because you eventually had to make a choice between being sub-optimal, or replacing your starter with a better version. Absolutely disgusting gameplay design that pushes you to put your starter in the PC to rot. Everyone makes jokes about it but for a franchise that's all about bonds and not treating them like disposable tools, the EV and IV system was cold and nasty.
@@pismodude2 they allowed nature changes in swsh though. I found the games very mediocre but that's easily the best things they've added to a pokemon game ever. And Ev's and IV changes were introduced in sun and moon.
The textures remind me of a n64 game... and there's pop in... in 2022. How sad.

You don’t need to go into the menu to throw the pokeball during battle. You can switch to it on the belt and press ZR
Yeah, you can literally just toss em.
You can even use gyro aiming
The amount of times my muscle memory has kicked in from previous games screwed this for me lol. I hit x to switch to balls, then hit A twice really quick to only kill whatever I’m trying to catch lol

Played this for 31 hours now, and I feel like it has been even more fun in the endgame than it was in the first 20 hours.
Right now, I feel like I could play this for well over 100 hours. I hope they release DLC.
As an adult, clocking in 100hrs of a Pokemon game would've felt like a dream of a bygone era. But now..

@@komodoknt I think it would be cool to have an MMO version too! Where you’re in a world filled with other trainers, and when you get close to one you can push a button to force them into battle! Basically we would be those forced trainer battles on routes! Make eye contact. It would have to be triggered manually by one of you, and if nobody pushes the button you can just walk on by. As long as you’re not running into other players every 2 steps I think it could work somehow. Would be interesting for sure.

But it’s *So Much FUN!!!* I can’t put it down.
They made the story in this soo damn good. I love the pre-pokemon era as we know it. The fact that they made most of the people actually terrified of pokemon is such an amazing touch, and how it would actually be at that time period. Slowly the people learn pokemon aren't just monsters, but actually awesome n helpful creatures. At the start, the town is small with no pokemon anywhere. But later everything changes. I love it all.
My opinions of the game in the 1st hour was “this is so boring there is way too much dialogue” but now I absolutely love the game and it’s definitely the best Pokémon game I’ve played in recent years
Yeah, the first hour is literally the tutorial section but after that you are free to your own devices. Like I have been just catching, battling, and filling out the Pokédex.
So it's kinda like... say NieR: Automata? Idk if you played that game but it was also that type of RPG where the beginning was a real slog, but the moment the chains were removed from you and you could do whatever you wanted, it was more or less one of the best ARPGs in recent years. I flippin' love that game.
A lot of mixed reviews. I hear it’s trash and then I hear it’s great.
I like that this game now exists because things like voice acting and better graphics could be added to next game. Maybe in 3 years or so. For me Arceus isn't quite yet worth purchasing.
As a person who plays 100 hours + jrpgs (ex: Persona) I always find it strange when people complain about "too much dialogue". I guess no everyone play games for the story/set up. lol

I was going to go rowlet and then saw the final evolution. Regular Decidueye was the coolest of those three though.

Graphical fidelity is very low on things I care about when playing games, so if the gameplay loop is fun and performance is good, I am pretty much on board.
Fortunately I find Legends incredibly fun and engaging 8 hours in. My biggest issue is that Pokemon in the overworld don't interact with each other. I was hoping for turf wars, pokemon playing with each other, etc. Would make the world feel more alive.

the most I've seen in regards to other pokemon interacting with each is when I was battling a shinx, another one sort of lined up next to it to battle me after I defeated the first. Which is pretty disappointing to be honest, I would've loved to have had to deal with 2 pokemon at once in a game like this, maybe dynamically being able to send in another one of my own.
If you aggro two pokémon and you start a battle when they are close to one another they will both join in the battle, so at least there’s that! Happened to me with two shinx, and later with a wurmple and buisel!

To actually play it - I have avoided Pokémon games for years but this is just so much fun! And that is what gaming is about. Fun.

I agree. I'm not a pokemon person, like I've never cared for the series at all, but I'm actually having an awesome time with it. Would love to see them expand on this formula even more in the future.
I hope that Gamefreak continues this new Monster Hunter style entry into the series. This formula can easily be improved upon and made even better. They could also test out voice acting, a true open world, and maybe even action battles.

This is one of my favourite Pokémon experiences as a fan. Played every game and i feel like a kid again experiencing the magic of the series. Nostalgia and dreams all in one
I think all the starters are awesome this time around, but I picked Cyndaquil as it was the first Pokémon I ever got in any game.
It's surprisingly entertaining. I didn't expect that. I'm still not a fan of how it looks but overall the gameplay loop and gathering is surprisingly fun. I'm 10 hours in and still didn't leave the first area.
Meanwhile gen 9 will come back with the regular hallway simulator 😂

I'm very interested seeing you go through the beginnings of new games.
I picked oshawott cause it's apparently good against the first noble. As someone who is a non-fan of pokemon, like I've never even cared or had interest in the series, I'm actually having a blast with it. I think the overhaul in formula is what got me excited about it, and I feel there's a lot of people in a similar position. I'd love to see them expand upon this formula even more in the future.
First noble is weird typing... I hit it about when I hit 2 star rank
I was so annoyed with how hand holdy this first 2 hours are. But now that I’m passed that I love the game! It’s so cool getting just a little more freedom than usual. It’s a nice change of pace. I hope they make even further more drastic changes to the mechanics in the future.

@@crow_g1639 imagine being such a clown that you go to videos about a Pokémon game and hate on people for liking it. You’re missing out on a good experience because you listen to what everyone else tells you like a sheep. If you don’t wanna play it that’s your loss, clown
some quick tips I learned.
If you come across 3 trees to collect, you can use different pokemon to do the tasks and then leave, they will return to you wherever you are (multiple at once).
-if a wild pokmon is in attack mode, the only option is to battle, or if you want to try and capture them without battling, you can run away and return to sneak up on them.
-capturing multiple pokemon as you run by, is so awesome.
Variety will come, just wait.
Does save data from previous games have to be on the same console to receive in game bonus rewards for PLA? I have two switches linked to the same user account but some games are on each switch.
The lack of voice acting is my biggest issue with the game
See, that doesn’t bother me too much, but what does irritate me is how archaic the Pokémon sounds are. They should sound like real animals, not fake DS noises!
Gamefreak just needs to bite the bullet and hire good voice actors.
When you are trying to catch Pokemon in battle you still can use zr to catch them instead of going to menu
People that defend the idea of not having voice acting are insane. They are so in that fanboy mentality that defend any imperfection in the game.
I'm only a few hours past where you were here and I've been really enjoying my time so far. The whole first hour all I kept thinking was how this took so many elements from monster hunter and was excited for it the more I thought of the potential it could have.
Yeah, the graphics aren't good but they also aren't bad. Honestly better than I was expecting in terms of crispness, there aren't a lot of blurry edges or muddy colors. For sure a game worth a look into if you love pokemon and are tired of the same old pokemon we've all grown to admonish in many aspects.
This is definitely a step in the right direction for the Pokemon series. Hopefully they introduce a lot of this "openness" into future mainline games.
It's not open. Imagine calling pokemon sword an open world game because of the wild area in it. You take the straight path boundries away that the past few pokemon games have had and widen them up a slight bit, keep the progress blocked areas in and all of a sudden people think this is an open world game... Gamers are the dumbest people i've ever seen.

This person didn't claim the game is open world they just talked about the openness in comparison with previous pokemon games which is a big difference. Maybe you should work on your reading comprehension before going around and calling people dumb.

I think this is such a awesome step for the franchise. I've been playing since crystal, and this is so fresh and fun. Like you said, the beginning really begs itself to be voice acted. But besides that, the graphics could use a little tweaking, but it's not a deal breaker. I honestly love it and it's going to be hard to go back to the old formula.
What I haven't seen people talk about. The Pokémon 3DS games have been teasing the whole falling/traveling through space, time and dimensions through rifts in spacetime. Both in the remakes and the main games.
That's why I and a lot of other people were looking forward to Gen4 remakes so much. What game would be a better place to start explaining what's going on than remakes of games literally about space and time.
That of course made it even more of a disappointment when the DP remakes turned out to basically be subpar mobile ports.
So this game actually going into the whole rifts in spacetime thing again had me really hyped.
There was a wild alpha Rapidash, and i swear it starred into my soul when i was swapping pokemon during battle.
The head turn was scary lol
For me it looks like BOTW was designed around the system limitations in a way that lets the art style speak for itself, instead of the graphical fidelity. Whereas here in pokemon everything looks just compressed by cheap algorithms instead of a real coherent art style.
Yes, let’s all cry about technicalities and act like the Pokémon company has the open world game making experience of capcom or Nintendo 🙉

Dude I’m soooo glad you mentioned voice acting on this. Like this is definitely a different realm of game than the previous Pokémon games, and with that in mind they should definitely be using voice actors for this. It was so dry to just click through that text and it almost felt like I was being cheated out of the experience in a way. I’m sure it’s cheaper to not hire voice actors but I definitely would have loved it for this game

i went with Oshawott. I figured his move syngergy with swords dance and aqua jet. his late stage evolution being dark type means i can use a chimchar to cover the missing fire/fight that the other two would provide, and i like his design the most.

I'm surprised it took them this long to do something like this. Since the entire concept of pokemon was the creator reliving his childhood exploring the country side and collecting bugs, I'm surprised game freak hasn't tried to embrace that concept more. He did an incredible job creating that feel with the hardware he had available the first time, and the first few gens expanded on it. But it's gotten stale and lazy, far from his original dream for the game. So it's good to see them embrace it. I wish they hadn't phone in some things like graphics, voice acting... especially with how much money these games bring in. I think that leveling up just by throwing balls is a little too fast. One thing I do love is the ability to switch out moves rather than forget them.
I Had espected them to do this since n64 area.
Part of that is the fact that they werent interested to make a pokemon not handheld. After that, we needed the power of a wii u to get something like this on such a scale, the wii u wasnt a good idea to do such a game. Lastly, sword and shield was half develop on 3ds instead of being a switch game from the ground up. So legend is something that actually make sense it took so long. Now, what i dont understand is, pokemon was very stale and anyboby in this industry could have done such a game in the last 12 years... it didnt happen.
Better now than never! And there is no other way than up from this! The next Pokémon games are going to be insane! The next Zelda game will be amazing and fresh!

I like how much they stuck to the timeline that they game was set in , such as:
1. When asking if you’re sure of you’re starer, not saying its type like in previous games, because not much is known about most Pokémon at the time. For example, in another game it may have asked “Would you like to pick Rowlet, the Grass Owl Pokemon”, where in this game, it only states Rowlet’s name.
2. The Pokédex being on paper, and a book, instead of a futuristic, digitally-enhanced device
3. The character wearing modern clothes is very weird to the people of Hisui
4, The character’s phone is rather strange to others, as it’s digitally-enhanced
Another thing: It’s not a spoiler, but Alola was briefly and vaguely mentioned later on. Wouldn’t it be so cool if we could actually see how Alola was during this time, or even other regions? I think Kalos would be the most interesting ancient region because of how reliant it is on technology. For example, the Power Plant and Lumiose Tower. Also, the blackout in Lumiose City had a large negative impact on the city itself. It could either be in this timeline, where its focused on the development of Kalos, from riding Gogoat to cars, taxis, and metros, how the Anistar sundial came to be, how skating became a part of their tradition, etc., or focused on the timeline of AZ’s war. Actually, they could even put it all together into one game!

The game is also more difficult than I anticipated. Everything wants to kill you lol. and I’ll be much higher level than other Pokémon in the wild and a lot of them still one-shot me.. for some reason though type moves that should be super effective arent… like I used a strong style thunderbolt against staravia and it wasn’t effective… I’m not sure why, I don’t think I am understanding this system

My biggest concern going forward though, when they make more games like this. Is that I definitely see them not changing much in future games. They’ll just have a new story (that’s probably so incredibly similar) a few new Pokémon, and a different region. Just like they do with main series games. I feel like what we have now is what we will always have for these titles. And eventually it’s gonna get old too
If you consider we’ve had tons of changes between LGPE Or SwSh and now Arceus, why would you just assume they can innovate no further? They could’ve just copy pasted LGPE for switch and redid all the mainline games in this style if they wanted a quick buck
It definitely reminds me more of monster hunter than botw but it’s more chill and allows you to stay out on maps as long as you like. I was worried about the game play loop but it has plenty to do. A few ideas for the next one. Pokémon have anime calls, voice acting and, out in the wild Pokémon engage with each other (natural predators, etc). This really is a great first effort for this new Pokémon series.
I'm enjoying this a lot. I had to play around with the controls since the game didn't seem to tell me all the things, like when to use ZL to specify which pokemon to attack or ZR to throw a ball or select a pokemon to switch without going to the up/down dpad menu in battle.
You can toss a pokemon out and press ZR again to return. You can toss out several balls or pokemon at once if you switch between them enough to throw at rocks/trees/pokemon. The controls are very fluid once you know them all.
Top notch game, just wish it was 60fps.

6:54 The dialogue sections of pokemon games would be way more tolerable if they had voice acting.
Even a simple, "Yeah!" Or "I see..." would be fine! And maybe for the key story elements they have full dialogue.
All the dialog needs a skip option it's a HUGE waste of time. An it pisses me off.

Graphics are ass, but the core gameplay imo is like jumping forward 3 generation's. Exactly what pokemon needed and I really hope they carry forward with these changes, expand them and release a game that doesn't look like the textures failed to load.

Mechanically and structurally its a refreshing change that will be pretty solid if they refine it. Technically it is ugly and doesn't even run that well. I get the switch is a lower power machine but I feel like if its this ugly the framerate should be consistent, or if it looked great I could overlook some frame rate dips. But this has both. Botw looked better years ago.
Oh and of all the games to get butthurt over botw comparisons, this is not the one. No, its not identical in gameplay. But A long running series with a stale formula looking for the next step being developed in the last few years, what media do you think they were looking at? Also I'm pretty sure some zelda devs even consulted with gamefreak. And they practically parodied it with their reveal trailer. It had to be intentional on their end. Its not even something you should be butthurt about. Its just a fact. Games that blow up tend to be influential. Its okay to knowledge a games influence. Nothing is developed in a vacuum. I loved doom and hexen and dark forces back in the day. If someone said "this is doom inspired", "this is a doom clone" it was a good thing. It told me I will probably enjoy this too. Whats the point in stifling the langue if you can get your point across in a succinct way. Its not a criticism, its just information. Doom wasn't the first FPS, it was still influential. Yes open world games existed before botw, that doesn't mean game freak creative leads were playing Assasins creed and saying, "maybe something like this with pokemon".

I can’t get over the feeling of being in a fishbowl like sword and shield. Where you can only go in a couple of buildings. From watching this I already got bored of the environment.

This review/impression has convinced me to go ahead and buy the game. I was on the fence as a long time Pokemon fan who really enjoys the main line games and don't really play any of the side games. But after seeing that first battle and realizing that this is their attempt to make the game that I've always wanted, I feel like I have to support them. And I'm looking forward to it now

If the Spawncast did all of the voice acting for the entire game, that would have made it ten times more entertaining.
this is the first time in a long time I have been interested in playing Pokémon for the first time with my Dyslexia voice acting with text helps me comprehend the story if I having trouble keeping up with trying to read or it becomes laborious to really all the text I just stop reading so being able to hear it at the same time really helps keep me into what's going on

I think a Legends: Ho-Oh is the next obvious place to go. Hoping for DLC on Arceus though.
I want a Souls-like Pokémon game. Literally you walk into a dungeon and the boss music starts and a fucking Moltress comes crashing out of the sky, only to be stomped and super effectived by a Logia you have to fight. You wake up by a poke-fire after fainting and you have to go back to get your exp cool-aid stain.

I'm pretty sure everyone figured this out by themselves already but here's how the Dex research works: You don't have to clear all boxes on it for the comleted entry. You "only" need 10 points for that, which is calculated by how many tasks you did on said page. Those with the red up mark on its left side count double. So for example, the Starly page at 14:30 is worth 7 points (2x2 for caught, 2 for caught without being spotted and 1 of catching both genders).

im getting Cyndaquil for my starter ... I've always picked Fire types in all my pokemon games since pokemon blue .....
its jarring to see this type of change of formula when it comes to the traditional sense of collecting gym badges and beating the elite four ... but I'm okay with it ... its something fresh and different .. and yeah the graphic wont WOW me or anything of the such ... but they kept the style I've been familiar with since the gameboy days ... the catching pokemons and collecting things as we explore the region .... what it could've been if someone were to spice up the graphic would've been cool to see but its still looks good and it keeps you immersed for a bit . bare in mind the popping in and out textures and pokemons frame rate taking some dips from afar
They've implemented things that should've been done a long time a go. The game play is really fun compared to what we've always been given in the past. I makes sword and shield seem like a real rush job. It does have a lot of crappy chatter you need to spam click through. The amount of little side tasks is huge and a lot of fun has been brought to catching pokemon. Especially when you start throwing smoke and fruit to increase your chances. I like it is a starting point for them changing up pokemon in the future.
Ok, I legit thought he was trolling with the BotW thing at the beginning...it starts almost shot for shot with the golden light

Man, an entire rocky cliff popped in at 17:55, it wasn't even far. Halo got blasted for visuals and was delayed a whole year, but when it's Pokemon.... different story.
Honestly, after playing it solely on my switch OLED it looks visually nice. Very vibrant and colorful. I have 0 problems with the aesthetics and graphics.

I have been having quite a bit of fun, still not that far into the game. I appreciate how expressive the characters are. I do think main characters should have voice acting for at least main plot stuff . I actually went with Oshawott. I usually went with grass but have not used a water starter in awhile and I barely heard anyone choosing him!

I think the graphics are pretty good when your nearby, I think the draw distance is the thing that hurts it the most. Some reviews were knocking the bio diversity, and lack of landmarks.... but the more I play the more diversity I notice and there are some suprising details if you pay attention. the trees are far better than sword and shield.
Voice acting would have made this game feel more premium
I agree with the voice overs to go with the dialog. I'm playing shining pearl, I know I'm late, while playing I can make connections to my childhood Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow. But, for a modern Pokemon game you would think other little aspects like voice overs for dialog would be implemented. Love the core of Pokemon but lost my spark with it since the second generation of Pokemon. Not because I grew up just because of how extensive the Pokedex can be, it's like what number now to catch'em all?
The task in the pokedex are really quick to do, each step does not only give one research level. When it says defeat 10, that would be enough to complete the pokedex entry after having caught one of this species.

Serious question...why is it any time a game is released with a 'similar' aesthetic to 'BOTW', folks seem to want to compare the visuals to 'BOTW', and the end result is it normally gets commented on in a negative light, when the games visuals aren't ultimately as good as 'BOTW'. The reason I ask this is because a ton of FPS's are released every year, and over 95% of them look identical(more identical than this game looks to BOTW), yet I never hear folks saying this game is going for the COD look, or the Halo look, and then knocking them if the visuals ultimately aren't as good. It just seems to have become a 'cliche' thing that everyone is doing now, when the simple truth is 98% of EVERY GAME that is made today is going to have look that is a similar aesthetic to other games that are out there. So saying this is going for the 'BOTW' look, or Sonic is going for the 'BOTW' look...wish folks would move past this and quit using these cliche comparisons...or if you want to do that, then let's hear the same thing when the next FPS comes out(or any game for that matter), and looks similar to games that have come before it.

This is pretty much what I wanted gen 8 to be. Minus the texture pop in issues, the game is pretty addicting.
Next gen expansive Pokémon open world adventure with bright colors, fresh mechanics and impressive art style: Spawn Wave: “it does look very flat on the ground” 🤣🤣🤣
