This was the main reason for me making the video, I remember testing this camera the first time, and thought it was faulty as I had no image, then found the HD setting, and voila the camera worked. Glad the video helped, it really is an awesome product!
Do the red and black cables from the camera get tapped into an always on power source (red/black cables from the head unit?) Or into the reverse cable for this headunit and camera set up?
i scrolled through my user manual, and i cannot for the life of me find anything about camera resolution. i did find where is says that avi, mts, mp4, wmv, several others say its 1920x1080 max resolution, but i figured thats for if your playing a video? i dont know and havent been able to find out much more then that. ( DMH-342EX )
I have my 740HD camera mounted sticking out of spare tire on wrangler connected to 958XR and it just shows a round image. Any idea why it is not full screen like this?
On the large screen (10.1") head units, yes you have a reverse image feature, but this is driven by the screen, not the camera. This feature does not work on Kenwood's 7" sized units.
Hey awesome video! I know you have the compatibility in the description but was wondering your thoughts if it would work with a DMX7017 BTS model? Cheers in advance!
Thanks for the review, I reached out to Kenwood about this working with the DMX958XR and they said no but it didn't make sense it wouldn't and you listed it would so I tried it. It does, of course. I'm using it as a front camera, do you know if there is a way to mirror the image as it's showing L R reversed for me (I saw your comment about the 10.1" screen, just wondered if there was new info). Thanks again for the excellent content!
Glad to hear you got it working, as it should on the DMX958XR. Mirroring the image is not possible on the DMX958XR though, only available on the 10.1" screen radios
Great video as always. Any idea if this camera will work as a left/right camera? I know it just might not be "HD" and Kenwood officially says that these should be used for front/rear.
You could possibly use it as a side view camera, but the mounting options are limited, and generally, side view cameras have a much wider view angle than front/rear cameras like this one. Also, as far as I know, not all 4 inputs on the Kenwood radios that accept this camera, are capable of high res input, only one, possibly two, are capable. Lastly, for side cameras, you would want to use an external side camera video switcher, which means no high res support. The Kenwood inputs have no auto switching capability (stupid in our opinion but it is how they set it up).
4 Camera Inputs To enable a smarter driving experience, receivers featuring 4 camera inputs allow for the utmost in convenience, flexibility, and safety. With 4 camera inputs, you can connect a rear camera, side (blind spot) cameras, and a KENWOOD dashboard camera (DRV-N520 sold separately). Alternatively, 4 camera inputs can support several other configurations, including the connection of 2 side cameras, a front HD camera, and a rear HD camera (CMOS-740HD sold separately). Camera switching is available using on screen controls, or automatically for side cameras when an optional iDatalink Maestro RR is connected (supported vehicles only
You have just saved me with the HD setting. Thought the camera was faulty. Thanks

Does it only work with a kenwood unit. I have a Sony es 9500 and would like a quality camera
Only works with Kenwood radios that are specifically compatible, as we outlined in the video.

Do you know if this works with a Kenwood DNX995s?
Does this camera have a reverse setting so I can use it as a forward facing camera.

Is the DMX7017BTS a European model receiver? We do not have compatibility info on this receiver, so would not be able to answer this for you.

hi what is the problem with having front camera on this unit? I am afraid I did not understand the mirror issue.

Hello, can i use this camera for the front of my vehicle in the bumper without the image being mirrored?
Ye syou can, *but* I believe it is the 10.1" screens that accommodate this only.
I have a ddx 9907xr in my car. How tough is the installation?
Not tough at all, same as a standard back up camera, hardest part would be camera mounting and running of cables.
Thank you.
Your welcome.
Is it compatible with Kenwood DDX9018S?
Not that we are aware of, as the DDX9018S is not a North American market model from Kenwood
Where is your shop located?
155 McIntosh Drive Unit 6, Markham Ontario Canada.
can't tell the quality of the cam without testing it at car park at day and night.
What a complete racket by Kenwood advertising it as "universal" them in the small print locking it down.
I'm not sure I would blame Kenwood, it's more of an industry thing whereby radio screens do not yet support hi res display, or hi res accessories.
Will this work with Sony XAV-AX1000? I tried connecting & it’s not working.
