Thank you for the full lyrics. I'm reading a book by Alan Noble called "Getting Out of Bed" and he mentioned this song, so I had to hear it. His book comes out in April 2023.
LYRICS Paramedics brave and strong Up before the break of dawn Putting poker faces on Broken bodies all day long The neighbors heard a fight Someone had a knife It must have have been the wife Husband's lost a lot of blood He wakes up screaming "Oh my God, am I gonna die? Am I gonna die?" As they strapped his arms down to his sides At times like these they'd been taught to lie "Buddy just calm down, you'll be alright." Several friends came to his grave His children were so well-behaved As the priest got up to speak The assembly craved relief But he himself had given up So instead he offered them this bitter cup "You're gonna die, we're all gonna die Could be twenty years, could be tonight Lately I have been wondering why We go to so much trouble to postpone the unavoidable And prolong the pain of being alive"
I'm going to school to be a paramedic and ive done ride alongs with the ambulance service where I live, this song moves me and is the greatest thanks in an over looked job. We do not ride around all day, we make holding your hand seem like the greatest thing while in a world of panic and pain.
This song isn't a thank you to paramedics... It's the climax to a concept album, in which the wife kills a womanizing husband after a long affair and painful marriage. Pretty much missed the entire point of the song.
+Nic L Yep. Nic is right. If you listen to the entire CD, it plays like a novel. The first part of the song was meant to build up the paramedic to deliver the last line to the husband before he dies, which was a lie. The entire CD is very somber. It's amazing.
David Bazan used to be a Christian, mainly during the earlier Pedro the Lion albums. Towards the end of the Pedro the Lion moniker, he started to question Christianity.
Here you go!

LYRICS
Paramedics brave and strong
Up before the break of dawn
Putting poker faces on
Broken bodies all day long
The neighbors heard a fight
Someone had a knife
It must have have been the wife
Husband's lost a lot of blood
He wakes up screaming
"Oh my God, am I gonna die?
Am I gonna die?"
As they strapped his arms down to his sides
At times like these they'd been taught to lie
"Buddy just calm down, you'll be alright."
Several friends came to his grave
His children were so well-behaved
As the priest got up to speak
The assembly craved relief
But he himself had given up
So instead he offered them this bitter cup
"You're gonna die, we're all gonna die
Could be twenty years, could be tonight
Lately I have been wondering why
We go to so much trouble to postpone the unavoidable
And prolong the pain of being alive"
Whoah. I just got crazy chills from this song. Haven't heard it in 15 years. I really liked PTL.
They are on tour
I listened to this song at least a hundred times before, but this is the first time I read the lyrics; and now it's like a whole new song.
I know this is an old comment but if you never listened to this song with the lyrics, have you listened to the album in order with the lyrics?
I am sad when I listen to this song, but the sadness gives me strength, that is what Bazan does somehow
I always listen to this song when I’m contemplating things. I think it’ll be the song I go out to
Powerful stuff.
David! AZ REP! WA REP!! COLORADO REPRESENT! THANK YOU DAVID!!! there I feel better.

Well that's the beauty of music. It's entirely open to interpretation regardless of the authors original intent.
+Nick Blinko That's not beauty; that's abuse of the author's intent.
+Rilian7 depends on the artist some artists like you to be able to interpret your own meaning out of a song
No.... It's a concept album... There is no up to "interpretation" .....:
+Nic L Yep. Nic is right. If you listen to the entire CD, it plays like a novel. The first part of the song was meant to build up the paramedic to deliver the last line to the husband before he dies, which was a lie. The entire CD is very somber. It's amazing.
Any chance you could put up Progress from this album?
I heard this band is a Christian group....
Not at all.
David Bazan used to be a Christian, mainly during the earlier Pedro the Lion albums. Towards the end of the Pedro the Lion moniker, he started to question Christianity.
+Dustin Lunsford Last time i saw him live a heckler called him out on it and he gave a brilliant monologue on where he currently stood.
Very nice. And, where does he stand?
Look around on TH-cam and I'm sure you can find his current beliefs. From his monologue I'd say he's of the no faith variety these days.
