@Nia Maki Alan Tudik is such a funny comic actor, I've seen him in so many movies and TV show's. He voices many of the characters of the Harley Quinn cartoon, each one being totally different, he is in that movie Tucker and Dale vs Evil where he is hilarious with his line delivery. I saw him in a minor role on that Dirk Gently Holistic Detective Agency show as one of the bad guys and he was great, I had no idea he was even in that show. And of course, Wash
They filmed this episode right after they got the news that the series hadn’t been renewed. The whole crew and cast knew it had been cancelled. So the funeral scene at the end doubled as a funeral for the series. So their sadness is genuine. And the tears.
Hadn't been renewed? They'd been cut off at the knee and hung out to dry! A regular order: 22 episodes. 14 were made, 3 never aired, and the final contracted time spots finally showed the pilot. Half a season from the gorram backbirthed purplebellies at Fox. They were in the middle of shooting when word came down. The music was turned into the show's dirge.
@@CaptainFrost32 Half the pilot at that. I don't if this was true everywhere, but they only aired the first half of Serenity here before they stopped airing the show at all.
@@CaptainFrost32 yep the show got cancelled mid shooting and not "not renewed". For some reason there is so much made up fan theories about Joss Whedon shows that people post as fact.
Mal "never explains" in the heat of the moment. He always has a plan, and you sort of need to trust him... I do agree there would be fewer issues if he explained sometimes, but often the chaos is too deep to take precious time for explanations... Likely he picked up the habit in the war, "do what I say I'll explain when we're safe" sort of thing. He did it to himself by not trusting Mal after... trusting Mal to get him home.
Yes. There were several hints that Tracy didn’t trust Mal, when he should have because of his knowledge of Mal during the war. He didn’t do what Mal said. Get off the bridge. Stay out of sight. Tracy told Kaylee he just wanted to see what was going on, when in fact, he was disobeying Mal by leaving her cabin. Book started to explain to him what the plan was but Tracy went all Rambo on the bridge and didn’t give him a chance. He had every reason to trust Mal. So sad he decided not to.
On the surface we have an all too real story about how a war vet struggles with civilized life. This episode ranks on the low end for me but I still find much to talk about. This episode we have to speculate that Tracey's ordinary organs are completely legal to ship (or it's legal to create ordinary new organs?) where as those synthesized organs must be illegally smuggled. There was mention of Tracey being not just a carrier, but an incubator. This suggests those illegal organs were developing into something more. Perhaps once developed they will grant super human metabolism in their host? Unnaturally long life? Other superhuman abilities? Who knows? Comparing Tracey to Jayne: Both are mercs that live the dangerous life to support their families - not for themselves. Both have been under the leadership of Mal. The only difference being Jayne is learning the value of loyalty and belonging where as Tracey only saw Mal as a sap. Comparing Tracey to Simon: Both are attracted to Kaylee. Kaylee is attracted to both of them. Tracey knows the words to appease Kaylee's fantasies but being 'a nice guy' is not the same as being 'a good man'. Simon may be awkward in romantic banter, but he is a genuinely good man.
Zoe demonstrates why Jayne gives her zero sass. She's a natural soldier, a born NCO and a stone killer. He mouths off at Mal because he knows Mal will fight him face to face. Zoe will just end him.
There is no marginal episode in this series. Some are hilarious and some carry great meaning. Glad to see you feel it. As we say here in Texas; Y'all be safe.
As has probably been mentioned before: We never get Book's backstory in the show, but there was later a graphic novel with the details. Turns out he was a spy for the Browncoats. He moved up the ranks of the Alliance and became the captain of one of those huge ships we sometimes see. At a crucial moment in the war he lead them into an ambush and got the ship destroyed, but his reputation as a brilliant Alliance captain remained intact (thus him getting preferential treatment by them). Thing was, he wasn't even who he told the Browncoats who he was - he'd literally murdered a man and assumed his identity before joining them. In the end, the spiral of all the people he'd lead to their death, even in a good cause, started to break him, and he joined the abbey where he became an actual shepherd. There's a wonderful bit in there about him regaining his footing in the universe, and it's one that has helped me keep mine when things begin to unravel.
Seriously?! You literally just spoiled all of that in a TH-cam comment without even a warning for anyone?! You're so desperate for attention that you just spoiled the mystery behind one of the great mysterious characters in TV. Delete your comment if you're a decent person.
I was 100% positive that this new guy was going to be bad the first time I saw him awake in the show. But not for any reason related to the actual plot. I saw his interest in Kaylee and he was instantly the bad guy. Because he's not good enough for her! So, I saw the betrayal coming, but for completely petty reasons.
There is a reason there's no aliens in this show. It's bc joss wanted to tell a space story that is more realistic. The basic idea is , yeah its the future, yeah humanity has expanded to the stars. But we are still human and no matter the time or tech advancement... we are still here struggling to survive, one day at a time. And that is why this is the 2nd greatest show ever made. 😊
yeah this episode hurts. On the one hand fuck tracy for pulling this. but on the other hand he was spiraling looking for a way out and never settled in after the war so it's easy to understand how he got to that point :/
This is a great episode, made extra poignant by the fact that it was the last one filmed. As such, the cast and crew took some opportunities to have a bit of fun with things. Most notably, Alan Tudyk and the director decided that he should go crazy when flying through the canyon. In the pilot they'd tried to establish that Wash is always calm under pressure when flying, but here, Alan went "full Jerry Lewis", as he put it in the episdoe commentary. It was also on the last day of filming this episode that Alan took the button from Out of Gas. However, they then had to film some more shots in the cockpit the next day, meaning that there are some shots where the button is missing. Also, apparently the composer wrote the music for funeral as a farewell to the show, knowing that it was the final episode. Knowing that makes that scene even more haunting, especially the final shot of Mal. Also remember that this episode never aired in the original broadcast, along with the previous episode and the following one. Oh and the actor who played Tracey is one of Joss Whedon's "triple threats", having appeared in this, Buffy and Angel. Finally, you should check out the bloopers if possible, because there's a particularly great moment from this episode. 😂
Ahh since this is over I’ve been thinking about putting up a poll for the next show, maybe I should add buffy and angel there. This makes me more sad knowing it’s the last episode they filmed… comments don’t seem to like this episode much but I thought it was really good, I felt so much for a kid that I knew for only 40 mins
Yes, this episode was filmed the week that Firefly was cancelled. This episode was never aired by fox so it didnt get the attention to detail or edits that a fully polished, finished episode would've gotten. Low budget show from the start - was now just running on fumes...
this was the last episode made. the cast and crew received the word while filming that they were being terminated with no opportunity to wrap anything up. the best the show team could do was reorder the last few episodes so as not to go out on such a downer. a few scenes were moved between episodes during the editing process in order to accomplish this. unfortunately, this last minute reshuffle actually created a minor continuity error; i'll point it out after you've finished the series.
I regard this episode as a perfect literary tragedy, up there with Oedipus and Hamlet and Romeo& Juliet. Tracy is brought to a bad end thruhis own internal flaw, his hustle, his over valuation of himself. He thinks he's smarter than everybody- his partners, The cop,Mal and Zoe, maybe even Kaylee. And he dies, because, no, he isn't, leaving the audience saddened and weeping, which causes catharsis, a psychological cleansing. My opinion, worth exactly its weight in recycled electrons..
3:28 That subtle foreshadowing there. And the fact that it's Mal who says it too. That's ironic. I'd honestly forgotten that little detail. When Mal says "someone's carrying a bullet for you right now, doesn't even know it" about ten seconds later. That's some serious subtlety right there. I'm not sure if it's good writing because it was set up so well or bad writing because the writer couldn't resist the urge to slip it in there to show off how clever they were. It doesn't feel too gratuitous or forced and flows quite well with the scene so I'm leaning towards good writing here.
Simon: "How do I know that you won't shoot me in my sleep?" Mal: "You don't know me, so i will explain. If i ever shoot you: You will be awake, you will be armed, and you'll be facing me."
The thing that bothers me about this episode is that there was no reason not to share the plan with Tracey. Also the plan doesn't make too much sense because they can just get back in their ship and bomb the firefly.
I think what it is is, they were just formulating the Plan when Tracy walked in. He heard the latter part of the plan out of context and panicked. He didn't really give them a chance to explain it as he was in full panic mode and waving a gun around. Even shot and wounded Wash, which definitely upped the tension and urgency. As for the "feds" bombing Serenity, I think they didn't want to take a chance on the crew already contacting the fed station and reporting his actions. There was no guarantee that the crew couldn't get a message out to the authorities before they could destroy the ship. Or even that they hadn't sent a message already. Lomack was still an officer. Just doing illegal stuff on the side. I think they were ready to cut their losses and not add Murder to any charges that might come about. Just trying to fill in the blanks with what might make sense.
It is a variation of what they did in Bushwhacked and other times. Show compliance and not give the satisfaction. Tracy was going to be shot for certain, as the organs were the goal. As long as the crooked cops did not know the Tams were on board, the organs would not be viable without taking Tracy to a Trauma Center and questions would be raised. Once the crooked cop writes it off and leave, (three on foot surrounded by armed veterans with home field advantage and high ground), then Tracy could be saved by Simon on board Serenity. If the Feds knew about the Tams, it would be a double payday and justification for being out of jurisdiction. Tracy had no place or trust in the crew or Mal. He had forgotten the lessons that Jayne had learned the hard way. [Funny how both had a girl name. Don't you think?] Tracey had been sweet on Zoe during the war, and smitten with Kaylee at first look. He fouled up by shooting Wash as Zoe wasted no time putting a bullet in Tracy's heart [as planned]. He could have dropped the gun and been mended. He panicked and tried to flee. The fatal error had been taking Kaylee hostage. The plan went out the window, as no one would permit that to continue. Tracy destroyed his chance.
I feel a little like thiz episode was saved by what was happening with the cancelation. This has plot holes. Yet again, there is a plan but no one tells the person affected by the plan. At least the last time it was Simon who isn't trigger happy. If they tell him the plan, he lives. Then the who giant plot hole of, where are his organs? They probably woukd have replaced them at the original meet, but when he decided to make more money, he lost hisvoriginal organs. So he would have died then. They searched the coffin and didn't find them. So, plot holes or Mal was right. "Do you think I'm stupid?" "In every possible way."
He had a black market deal to begin with. He could have been given standard organ from multiple donors (willing or not, illegal human trafficking). After the last of the Newtech organs were harvested, the payoff would have been temporary until he was silenced.
@@CaptainFrost32 My issue with this is that, as an actual courier myself, if I heard all my predecessors somehow died, I'm not taking that job. If it was only those who f-ed around and found out, I would be careful not to f around. Personally, I would never go under the knife unless absolutely necessary, so that would keep me away, regardless of pay. But if they killed all the couriers, I wouldn't deliver them lunch.
