When I moved from Germany to Las Vegas, the first two years I had only one friend in this town and it was pure luck that I met her. Yes I loved the city itself, but couldn't find good people I trust that I wanted to become friends with.
Then I moved to an other high rise and directly noticed that the people there were so different. I became friends with many of my neighbors and they introduced me to their friends as well. Now I have very interesting & smart people around me all the time. Some of them became family to me. We also go on vacation trips together. So hang in there, you will find good people you can 100% trust. Just give it a bit more time and try different things.

I am also moving into a NLV home that I previously rented put. I was fearful but soon realized that it wasn’t bad at all. My neighbors are quiet and respectful and I’ve had Amazon stuff sitting outside for weeks not one thing got swiped. Water quality not so good but I keep consumption to a bare minimum. I would rather live there than have to stare at someone’s tent in front of my million plus dollar house.

@@chrishaz1122 Chris, I do not know how often you have been in Vegas before. In general to get a bit more familiar with the city I would try staying in a hotel or extended stay would be a good start 2-3 weeks before you decide to move to a certain area.
When you want it is really not that hard to meet Vegas locals (when you are not an introvert type of person) Also for the start you could look up if there is a comunity/forum/facebook group for people from England who are living in Vegas. When I moved from Germany to Vegas, I honestly first avoided the German community here, because I thought I do not need to leave Germany to hang out with germans. lol. However, my wife went to their meeting once and met one super nice person who invited us to a party.... just on this party alone we made a lot of good friends.
Beside that it is always easy to become friends with people you have something in common. So let's say you ride bicycles, motorcycles, love hiking, soccer or whatever. There will be a meetup group for this or a club in Vegas you can join.
This all might sound a bit hard first, but reality is when you are able to meet 2-3 good people who like you a lot, they will give you access to all their friends. Also living in Vegas feels more like you are in a small village. Yes there are many tourists in town, BUT you will notice soon that you will meet always the same locals at the parties or events. Chris, I hope some of my ideas were a bit helpful for you and I wish you all the best for your adventure (it's a cool expierence to move to a different country, I love it here so much)

TIP. When you miss your old office job - you think going back to it, will make you feel better. But when you do - you will immediately feel like you've GONE BACK in life. Not forward.
The people you have good memories of working with, are gone. Times and technology have changed too. It won't feel the same at all. You need something new in life.
In TechLead's case - I think he should start or buy his own business. There's no reason he can't become a big tech player out there.

I have met the best people and had the best time of my life. I live South of Las Vegas and it is awesome here. I work for a Tech Company. There are tons of nerdy Tech people here. You won't meet friends in Vegas, the same way you do in California because the lifestyle is a bit different. You need to get out to events and meet people, once you do, your circle of friends grows, and longer-term residents/locals know that, so you are embraced. I hardly met anyone my first year in 2014 but once I started getting out there, I met a good circle of friends.

He's not lying, or trolling etc. I came to Vegas as well like a year ago, I'm not a millionaire like him but tbh I have a lot of the same complaints. I've never drank the water here, I've read the same things and I don't trust the water here. The city, is kind of a mess, it's cheap here for certain things but also pretty expensive, it's not cheap to do "fun things" here if it doesn't involve a casino...they charge an arm and a leg to do fun things here, I went to a museum here and it was 60 bucks per person...for a museum. I'd say living in Vegas is mid. And yeah it's hard to make friends here because people here tend to be very fickle. It's ok... I mean not the worst place I've ever lived but it's really not that great to live here. There is a lot of other things I can mention, like if you have kids... The public schools here are very bad, UNLV is a decent college but it's not that great. This city isn't really kid oriented or family friendly. Lot of negative sht going on here, yeah there is low traffic congestion but people drive crazy af here. I've witnessed 3 different accidents right in front of me here. And he's wrong about danger, Las Vegas is in the top 10 most dangerous cities as far as murder rate, there is a lot of burglary and strong armed robbery going on here, shootings happen pretty much every other day, a shooting happened at my apartment complex a couple weeks ago and there was a bunch of cops circling, nobody got hit though. Good things, I'd say the weather is still good even though the summer kindof sucks, there is a lot going on here, if you want to be in entertainment, hotel management, or services oriented industry, it's a great city for that, a lot of trade shows and stuff like that happen here and sometimes you can find deals to do fun stuff. But overall it's mid, and it's really not that cheap... Yeah no state income tax but they make up for that in other ways trust me. I've never paid more for car insurance and registration than I have here and I've lived in several cities.
Kindof interesting, beat the bush recently mentioned he sortof regrets leaving electrical engineering for a career as a content creator on TH-cam, and he doesn't pull the numbers you do so. Idk, you guys did that, now you're doing this... Can't go back in time.
Oh and lastly, you should probably look at Henderson or Summerline before you decide full on to go back to CA. I'm surprised you didn't mention either. I'm looking at getting an apartment in summerline, it's gonna be high but I think worth it over where I'm at now.

Burnt out TH-camrs ending up in Las Vegas is a crack up comment. If you were on stage, you would get laughs from the audience with that one. Your talk was very interesting and made me think that it seems like it boils down to our extent of being programmed. If I had $1 billion and went through the Ferraris and shiny homes as you put it, it all gets boring after a while, so I like the way you spoke about being more internal in your head. It seems much more valid. This level of existence can get boring real fast unless we have something more ethereal to think about.

What you should do is keep Nevada as your no income tax home base. You got screwed over by California once, don't go back, it's not worth it. Live in Vegas and just "visit" California for less than 181 days if you must. LV has a big airport and you should take advantage of that, go to San José del Cabo in Baja California 🇲🇽 as a second residence, that place is beautiful and not too far away for a flight or explore other areas, it's probably a good idea to start exploring countries outside the "Rules Based Order" seeing how things are quickly going down the tubes.

I have lived in SF Bay Area / Silicon Valley majority of my life - from undergrad and graduate schools to decades of my career in high tech. I was attracted to Las Vegas and Florida as a second home when I retired because of the tax benefits. However, I do have concerns as both Las Vegas or Florida is not an ideal place to live year round (based on my judgment). Similar to you, I wonder if I can use Las Vegas as a base to travel the grand circle (national parks in Utah, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado) for three months in a year. I also wonder if the conferences and trade shows hosted by the Las Vegas Convention Center can provide intellectual stimulation. Personally, the restaurants, shows, casinos and glamorous buildings are not the main attractions for me.
When I travel/vacation to a nice location, such as Hawaii, Banff, Vienna, etc., I often ask myself whether I can live there when I retire. One thing many of these locations lack is the intellectual stimulation for techies like you and I. In Silicon Valley, I can attend some interesting events, such as Apple's WWDC just happened this week, which would be hard to come by in Hawaii, Banff, or Vienna. I can attend smaller events hosted by Stanford University's engineering, business, and law schools that discuss state of the art developments in those fields. There are endless of seminars and talks hosted by different IEEE groups. Someone may ask why do I bother to attend these techie events after I retire. It is because I am an investor, I want to know whether the VR goggle introduced by Apple will be a successful product or not. I want to know which A.I. companies are for real, and which ones are not.
I will keep an eye on your next move. In the meantime, good luck.

I left California a year ago and am moving back. I never realized how much I took for granted living in that state. In retrospect the issues that made me want to leave are not nearly as bad as issues I have experienced living in CO near Denver. I also visit the East Coast frequently now for work, and I am really not a fan. Maybe something like Washington would be better but I don't know anybody there so moving back to CA is an easy choice for me.
I have lived in Irvine before and it's a very nice and clean city with a high East Asian population. Always felt very safe there. Though it does have a bit of an artificial feel to it.

I really realized that I just strongly dislike the desert. I lived for a while in a different desert wasteland called Phoenix, but moved back to CA as soon as I could. Not even sure what the water quality was like because I was so distracted by the ungodly heat. People were largely pretty unfriendly, and I rarely ever saw my neighbors. Their houses were either unoccupied or they were holed up inside with blacked out window shades to escape said heat.

I moved to Phoenix 35 years ago and have lived all over United States. Nothing or no one could have ever prepared me for what I was about to experience living in Phoenix. People told me that it was hot but it was a dry heat. Well I figured I've lived in South Florida for a year and Atlanta for 4 years so I figured it could be that bad. Needless to say it was like living in a n oven( a 115 degree oven. Friends of mine like to play tennis invited me to play and I figured okay we'll go around 8 or 9 a.m. well my friend said no we have to go at 6 a.m. by 8 a.m. it was already 95 and not a cloud in the sky and I knew I was going to die a million deaths. I never saw my neighbor's I thought people that all died in my neighborhood because temperature was so hot that nobody went out during the day. Sometimes I would see people at 1 or 1:30 a.m. outside walking their dog. The temperature had come down from 115 degrees to about 95 degrees. That someone who is a sunshine kind of person I never thought I'd see the day when I would wake up and look out my bedroom window and see that big ball of fire the Sun and I just knew I was going to be dying a million deaths that day. Because there's nothing to do for seven or eight months a year with all that heat there was nothing else to do but drink on the weekends and get drunk. After one year I could not take it anymore and I moved from Phoenix to California and have never looked back it would never go back there again. To me it was like hell on Earth.

Some of my family sold their small house in Los Angeles and bought a mini mansion in Phoenix. They invited me their for the weekend. It was 115 degrees and even the air was hot. I asked but it cools down at night right so we can go for a jog or a nice walk outside. They said no it's hot at night as well. It was about 100 at 2 in the morning! It never let up, it was just hot all the time. So I spent the entire weekend inside the house with the Air Conditioning "AC" blasting, then got in my car with the AC blasting, when to the mall and walked around indoors where there was AC. My family said you get use the heat. Well, you actually don't you get use to being indoors in the AC the whole time. In Los Angeles I can go to the beach and walk around the boardwalk, take the bike path, walk around the shops, relax on the sand. I can go to the mountains for a nice hike. I can go and explore different areas of the city. I really don't need a big house in Los Angeles. In Phoenix I would need a big house with an indoor pool because I would spend most of my time indoors.

When I moved here back in the 90’s, I got very sick with a stomach virus. The doctor told me everyone here has bottled water service, despite being told the water is fine, it really isn’t okay to drink. I was sick for two weeks, I couldn’t even keep down liquids like juice or bottled water, Gatorade. After a few days I could tolerate liquids but no food at all. I can’t remember the name for the stomach virus it was but it was awful. I hate having the extra bill of a water service every month but there is no choice here . I can agree with everything else you mentioned as well, especially regarding the people. Back then it was so so, you could make friends more easily but you had to watch who you made friends with. Now? Forget it. Nasty, selfish, ill mannered, just like void of any decency. My husband and I have very few friends here, the ones we have we have known for years. Other than that, we keep to ourselves. Just yesterday morning, I was at our complex’s gym. The office is closed on Sundays, security is nowhere to be found, and one other girl in the gym with me. A man was banging on the door to be let in. You’re supposed to have your own key. I shook my head no. He gave me dirty looks & rolled his eyes. He was also pacing in front of the windows looking in , kind of staring at us, that made me uncomfortable. He comes back with his key fob, walks right up to me while I’m on the treadmill & starts berating me because I wouldn’t let him in earlier. I said, Sir, it’s a safety issue. I don’t know you. There’s another girl in here & if something should go wrong, I am the one responsible because I opened the door for a stranger. He keeps yelling, talking over me, I repeatedly asked him to get away from me, he called me a b and walked to other side of the gym. I left & my husband went down and had words with him. My husband now has to go with me when I workout, at least for the time being. He believes the guy was on drugs, just crazy. And he lives here in the complex. Great. I thought since it is a higher end place, it would have better quality people. Nope. How are these people passing the background checks? It gets worse every year. We moved away when covid hit and then moved back summer of 2022. I seriously regret coming back here. Fatal accidents every day. Garbage people, it’s not the same. You had to be careful before but it wasn’t this bad. It’s hell now, I hate it. 😢 Oh and get ready, summer is coming so that means get ready for your vision to be assaulted by the 500 lb. , tattoos everywhere, booty short wearing trash. I saw a few over the past week when we had a few warmer days. Butt cheeks hanging out , tatted all up & down the legs & arms, massively overweight & had a child or two with them. That’s their mother? They walk around like that, risking negative attention & bringing their child into that dangerous situation. I see it more & more here. Just disgusting.

Honestly as a Vegas native I'm surprised you moved here.
My brother recently moved from here to San Diego and he does not coming back and I understand.
My attachment to this place is just solely because I grew up here.
Once you get outside of the casinos, there is not much besides heat and dirt.
Nevada is a very spread out, outdoorsy type place. Worth checking out. But some people don't like the solace of the open desert. I do. I will trade California beaches for our sunsets and vast open nothingness.
Ever been horseback riding in the open desert? Land sail on a dry lake bed? Go skeet shooting? Camp in the open desert with nobody around for miles. Drive a dune buggy or quad flat out. Go River rafting through a canyon. Go to a brothel (probably not), go to a ghost town or up north to some of the older towns like Virginia City or Carson?
I guess you don't know the joy of being in a little house out in the middle of nowhere with nobody around.
Grilling up some up some steaks with a nice drink and a smoke. Purple and orange skys. Vastness for miles. Blanket of stars in total darkness when the sun goes down.
California is a different vibe entirely then Nevada. People are typically laid back, anywhere but Vegas. In Vegas most people are very closed off.
Especially outside of Vegas. Vegas is kinda some what like California. (Depends on what you are doing in the city).
Las Vegas is a black hole in reality in the desert.

Well said 👍 Don't give away too much of it's charm though. All of the beautiful desert will be ruined here too and sold to the highest mega-corp like they do in CA. Better to let them just complain and move away. You only have to look at what's become of Joshua Tree or Alabama Hills if you want to see how much they care about the environment and outdoor areas there. We won't even go back now and it was one of our favourite areas...

New to your channel. I'm actually a life long NYer currently in Vegas as we speak looking at potential condos. While I am not quite ready to move, I know that NYC is not in my future. I'm 50 years old, single, so not worried about schools however as I inch closer to retirement quality of life and safety become big issues as well as property/income taxes. My short list of cities is Tampa, Boca Raton/Ft. Laud area and suburban Vegas. However if I could afford it, Irvine CA would be perfect. Just such a great blend of "niceness" in suburbia but you're only an hour south of filthy LA if you need some urban in your life! Since I can't afford Irvine, Vegas is looking good. Summerlin and Henderson are beautiful areas. Although I haven't experience a full Vegas summer yet, NYC at 95degrees with 95% humidity in the middle of August is about as disgusting as it gets.

Come to Walnut Creek CA, it's in the East Bay Area, very family oriented, safe, lots of beautiful nature around

Very interesting and informative video. I lived in California for 18 yrs., worked at the studios and loved every minute of living in CA (including driving through canyons on fire LOL) I agree with about 90% of what you said, as we get older we look for different lifestyles depending on our interests. I grew up in Colo. and if you like hiking, its beautiful (I did that when I was 16 and now find it boring), although I still enjoy long drives through the mountains (ending up at lodges where I can curl up in front of a fireplace with a good book & coffee or glass of wine). [My friend lives in Lakewood, CO and apparently there is an area which has been exposed to ethylene oxide which causes cancers! So, go figure.] I was actually thinking of moving to Vegas so I found your comments interesting. My mom was Japanese so I have been looking into at least long visits there. I am still searching as well and look forward to hearing more about your next steps.

Damn sifu, it's like you were talking directly to me. The part about not being able to see or touch the absence of quality people around you really hit home. As did the part about Vegas being a graveyard for TH-camrs. :(

You're looking in the wrong places for the wrong things. You want family.

I never thought a TH-camr with 1M+ subscriber would want to go back to a normal 9-5.

    I have a similar experience.
I was working at an accounting firm. I could have gone back to school, gotten my degree, worked my way up to becomming a controller at a good firm ..
But then i went out to Vegas. Started playing poker and ive been doing that for two years while traveling around the country.
Now im literally on the road, days away from returning to Vegas to continue playing poker.
Some days id rather just be working as an accountant, working a 9-5 and earning an honest wage.

For God's sake, go back to the accounting field! And get yourself out of Las Vegas! There is no future in Vegas for you! It's not too late! Surely there are lots of job openings in the field right now. You're more likely to become a millionaire accountant than a millionaire poker player.

Try Miami, TechLead. We would love to have you. A lot of fast-living people but a lot of kind and intelligent people here. Key Biscayne is top notch.

We are double Ivys, both professionals, attorney, finance, lived here 23 years, Las Vegas as I have said for a long time you either love it or hate it. Some of your criticisms are fair, but ultimately Las Vegas is whatever you make of it. We aren't really interested in visiting with others, work, family and enjoying desert southwest at a relatively low cost of living compared to SoCal, East Coast makes this an easy choice for us. No place is perfect, but for us LV has so many more positives than negatives, BUT fundamentally it is dry, sun, desert, no state income tax, wonderful restaurants, shows, can't go wrong. Best wishes.
