Is It Ok for Companies to Force Employees Back Into the Office? | Loose Women

- Companies like Amazon, X and HSBC have hinted to employees they’d be expected to work in the office five days a week. The rumours have, unsurprisingly, been met with mixed reactions - but is it unfair of companies to force the old way of working back onto people? Coleen has always wondered how much work people really do from home, whereas Sinéad (who works with a completely remote team) thinks the move towards more working from home has been an incredible benefit to disabled people.

WFH is a game changer for neurodivergent and disabled people.
WFH is a game changer for many different demographics. Parents, single parent. People with medical issues such as endometriosis, anaemia list goes on really
YES BUT IT ALSO ISOLATES PEOPLE
@@nirish25you can do like 2 days a week, good to isolate when you need to be productive.
i agree with sinead, work from home has been good for disabled people and granted them more accessibility. that said, WFH is at the discretion of each company. if someone doesn't offer working from home, find a company that does (and many still do) rather than force the company to change.
Great introduction by the new lady. Love her already ❤
For many people it’s about striking the right work life balance. Lots of people save commuting time and can use that time to do household chores etc.
This is a mental health pandemic so it’s what works for the employer and also the individual’s wellbeing. 😇
Thought Sinead was very good as a new panellist, hope to see her on more often🎉
I would really like to know what % of the population works in an office environment. Nurses, teachers, transport workers, retail workers, actors & co are not office workers … and yet commentators, magazines, journalists are obsessed with the office when talking about work.
It needs to be based on productivity and a case by case basis. Some people look after relatives etc and can balance it all the extra spent on the commute alone could be better served for them. Also, some people are isolated at the office of experience bullying etc. one size fits all just doesn’t work
How can you measure that though, because as discussed here productivity isn’t environmentally based. So I disagree, if someone wants to l WFH.. let them. If productivity becomes a problem take the usual steps a company would.
@@Jade-jd8qq I agree. Most companies have targets and you are measured that way. If you’re meeting them you should have the choice I say
I work in one of the offices at the British Library and due to hybrid working on account of my autism, I WFH three days a week and I go into the office twice a week. If an institution such as the British Library allows this for their office workers, surely other organizations that can allow this should allow this.
The real issue is that most large organisations have been downsizing their offices. So there isn't actually the office space for workers to come into work. We will simply go back to presenteeeism. Even when I am in the office most of my meetings are conducted over teams.
When "work from home" jobs are outsourced to other countries, will people be complaining ?
Lovely group today , 😊
Work from home is meant for you to fill your time with the company's work objectives. You are getting paid to work from to to do company work. You are NOT being paid to take care of your personal business, child care, elder care, cleaning, dog walking etc etc etc.
Okay, just be happy with the status quo and never look to get a better life for others. Life isn't about spending the majority of your waking day at 'work'
How did she get to work pre WFH
If the Employment Contract says your location of work is in the office and your employer wants you to return there, I don't see how the employee has the right to refuse.
Equally, it's not reasonable for employers to be completely inflexible about WFH.
There are circumstances where it's the most practical option - where the employee needs to concentrate intensely, or where they're having work done on their home, or need to have something delivered, if they can work at home, it's not reasonable for an employer to insist on employees taking time off in those circumstances.
There are cases where a CEO says everyone has to be in person, but most of the project managers don’t see the point. It can be inappropriately micromanaged.
Therefore, when we were expected (and did) work from home during Covid, we should have refused because our work place is the office in our contracts?
@@bruteroots Love this comment. So true.
If you want to work for a particular company, you have to adhere with what they are asking. No one is forcing you to work there. If not you can chose to work for a company, that still operates a work from home scheme
If the job was office based when you accepted, that is where you should be during working hours. The only ones who don't want to go back into the office environment are the skivers who do as little as possible but still expect to get a full wage. Working from home was brought in during the pandemic with the expectation that employees would return to their place of work when the time was right - that time has arrived so GET BACK TO THE OFFICE! Those that won't comply should be sacked, there are millions of people out of work to replace them with. Very few jobs that benefit from people working at home , in my experience.
False.
Loose women really couldn’t give a relatable view on this one, none of them understand the lifestyle change that has come with WFH
WFH - a great wayfor companies to justify getting jobs off-shored... call centres were just 1st tranche of office work.... There's a huge educated middle class across the world in countries with far lower wages where many speak English....
Working from home is good for those that are unable to get to work but no if you can travel it just feels more the want to get on and work in an office amongst others .
And what about people who can’t work from home??
I need a bit of both and I do a bit of both.
I think knowing the space is safe and secure from danger too makes a difference in a person's performance at work.
I previously worked for Barclays (very recently) and submitted a flexible working application to reduce office days each week, linked to various reasons including wellbeing and mental health. They refused my application and said it would be detrimental to my performance and the wider teams, even though I was able to do my job entirely from home and most of the team were location all over the UK. The new laws don’t go far enough for appeals and the refusal reasons are too easy for companies to use.
Why did you think Barclays should change to suit you ?
@@carolewynn9407because employees are the firm. Not shareholders.
@@Luceeeeeeeeeeeeee Once you change the rules for one, it never ends. Surely when the person started at Barclays they were aware of the conditions ?
Very very few people working from home that i know really give their best. It's very unfair on people who cannot do their job from home, nurses, doctors, shop staff , bus and train drivers etc. Yes it's correct to say people slacking off at home did the same in the off but still doesn't make it right.
More importantly people need others
I don’t understand your logic. Some people cannot work from home so no one should?
That is a dumb comparison! If you chose to be a nurse or doctor then you know that your career involves being out in public, the POINT of different careers is you CHOOSE options that suit you more, and some people don’t like public facing roles and chose jobs that are introverted, so they don’t have to be full time in shared office
Yes it is right to force people back.... If it wasn't for covid, this wouldn't even be a debate, fact. Why should those people who have to travel to work pay for transport to get to their workplace? Why should some people have it easy, being at home? Not everyone is disabled..... And working from home just makes call centre workers very unprofessional, their attitude is foul because they are at home. End of.
I think that if you are working for a company who has the option to either work from home, or work in the office, one needs to consider their own work ethic. Some persons are focused on the tasks, and are great at self management. Others require management to assist them in staying focused. Regardless, socialising with other employees, whom one enjoys is always positive.
Not for everyone it isn’t that’s the whole point, having the option

During lockdown, fair enough. Now, WFH should be case by case. As a rule, no, because it has had a terrible effect on high street shops.
Not in the office then sack them all
🤡
👍
Yes they should be back in the office 💯
Because they become lazy and its not good for their mental health
🤡
The segment went right over your head didn’t it🤡
I have two children and don’t drive. Working from home has been so helpful for me. I’m far from lazy! I no longer have to put my kids in the school breakfast club (7:30am!!) just so I can get to work on time. We are all much happier.
It's ironic you say that! Working in the office was terrible for my mental health as a physically chronically ill person and someone with autism. I was so burnt out and in so much pain even just physically getting to work and it made me less productive. Whereas when I could WFH I was able to get everything done that I needed to and more, without feeling such mental burnout, without feeling intense pain all over my body that distracted me from working because it was all I could think about. It's absolutely about nuance. Some people it is better for their mental health to be in an office! But for people like me, WFH allowed me to stay in employment when I otherwise wouldnt be able to.
Something tells me you don’t work, Mary.
Of course it is !, if you don’t like it, leave and get another job, OR !, start your own business , then you will learn that you work because you don’t have the MoneY to NOT WORK,
GROW UP
Where other people work does not affect you in any way, Norman.
