Question: is the weight of the trolling motor an issue hanging off the side in the way the kayak rides? I made a very similar mount and I’m worried about the weight distribution
I have just finished making a similar transom and have a 46lb minkota, my boat has enough room on the back deck for a solar panel, my battery fits in my front hatch. I like your setup and I’m dying to get mine out. I guess the reason I’m commenting is because I have been trolling (pun not intended) these diy kayak vids to see how many have registration numbers. A lot don’t, but you happened to mention the requirement in Maryland, my question is, is there a distinction there between different size boats? In my state it is the same to register my kayak with an electric motor as it is to register a fifty foot cabin cruiser with twin diesels. Title, vin check, marine inspection, registration
I just used this method. By far the easiest and least expensive. I have a Watersnake 18 lb. thrust which weighs only 8 lbs so I used a 2x2 to span the beam.
I made something very similar with the trolling motor suspended off the right side of the kayak. The problem I found is that the weight of the motor (mine's about 24 lbs) definitely screws up the trim of the kayak unless a counterweight is added to the other side. That fixed the trim, but because the trolling motor's thrust is not in-line with the keel of the kayak, it had a tendency to "push" the kayak slightly sidewise through the water rather than propelling it directly forward and straight. This lead me to always having to steer a few degrees to left to make the kayak go straight. Turning to the left is pretty easy but turning to the right is really difficult...found I needed to drag a paddle on the right side to in order to help make those right turns. Finally, gave up. I love trial and error, but have decided to mount the motor on the stern using a PDM to control the thrust as well as forward/reverse plus will be buying the Feelfree Beavertail kit which contains all the cabling and footrests necessary for steering and lifting it out of the water. That kit might not work for every kayak, of course. Nice video and very informative!
SMD Fishing I used the tracks and toilet bolts(extra long) at Lowe’s, 2x4, trimmed them down just like you did. I had another mount in my way so I couldn’t put tracks in same spot. I see you posted the video about 2months ago. How has it held up so far?
Ive been using it for about a year and a half, but it has held up great honestly. I haven't really found any fualt with the design.
SMD Fishing great. I have a #BigTuna JacksonKayak and have been searching for a DIY mounting ideas for a trolling motor
Thanks again for the detailed video
@@k9kayaks Glad I could help
I chose to go with my 10hp honda outboard because I dont like it when batteries run out and you have to wait 4-5 hours for them to charge all the way again
Nice, be safe out there and have fun.
using 65lb thrust but gotta diy a mount first. Already failed buying a piece aluminum that's too flimsy😅. now gotta go back to hardware store and trade it for something else
Good luck on the build. I hope it turns out great. Be careful out there.
@@GTX10 Thanks man, full throttles not for me. I'm usually at the lowest possible speed just cruising and casting. I ended up doing your build. It comes off real easy but I just leave it on.
Can you please lmk what's the name of each product that you used I want to do it on mine but DNT want to buy the wrong pieces
I will as soon as possible
Just got a sub! The track mounted part was exactly what I’m missing on trying to make my mount quickly removable. I don’t have a trailer, so top of the Jeep is where my yak goes... it would be 100x harder to put it up there with the motor on it.
Thanks for the support. I completely understand your dilemma. Glad my video helped you out.
nice
Thank you, this setup continues to work for me.
Totally unrelated but does anyone that owns this kayak have an issue with a leak around the two screws in the bottom rear? This is the second one I have got, the first one I returned for the same issue Took this one out for its maiden voyage and had about two cups of water inside when I was done. Took it home and tilted the kayak up and water started dripping from the screws that hold the black skid plate on. I don’t who the rocket scientist was that thought drilling holes in the bottom was a good idea?
Wonder if take the screws out and the goop the crap out of them if it would fix it?
No issues here, sorry to hear your situation
Well crap, I hope I am good taking out the two screws and gooping them? I hate to take it back again and return it.
They are called johnni bolts. They bolt the toilet down to the floor.
Thanks, I appreciate it
Jon jones is into kayaking? Who knew..
Ayyye thats great, glad I picked one up and got out there, never looked back.
Great job, man. Nice and simple, sturdy..
Thank you, I appreciate it.
