🥺 they all should have been stored safely and then put in a museum. Thank goodness these two were put in good hands and fully restored. The film is a treasure, and every puppet was special and important. It made me tear up seeing Santa and Rudolph in such a horrible state. I can't imagine what the others looked like.
oh crap, I’m so glad that they got repaired as far as I know. but the ones that melted though, irreplaceable. I wonder where the rest of them are, and if they’re even still recognizable. I rewatched the video, and it’s so sad to see that Herme got melted. Atleast we can still see them in the movies, though.
I always wondered what happened to the characters...Glad at least some of the characters have been recovered...people don't know the value of these puppets and they treat them as nothing...These are Legendary and were a wonderful part of my childhood. ♥️
I'm glad that the TV presentation still exists in one form or another. As kids (my three younger brothers and me) we were at rapt attention for the first broadcast in 1964. My youngest brother, then just 21 months old, had to be held back from touching Rudolph and Santa on the TV screen as he was fascinated by the program.
what makes me the most sad is that yukon cornelius got melted, and probably bumble too. those were my favorite. i'm just glad that at least rudolph and santa survived
memethyst I know... :'( (Not only that's really sad, but I had a HUGE fictional crush on Hermey as a little girl, and just reading that the fact his original puppet in the special was already melted and destroyed all those years ago before I was even born breaks my heart... :'( Oh, and Dolly, (A Dolly For Sue) too, she was my favorite Misfit toy, and just thinking about the original puppet of her being melted with the original Hermey puppet hurts me too... :'( ) It stinks and it's really sad they couldn’t save him or the others since (from what I read) they didn’t know what they were gonna do with them in the future, so a lot of them were destroyed, melted, and lost over the years. :( It’s awful, but the good news is they at least got Rudolph and Santa restored, otherwise they would of probably ended up like the others and none of them from the special would have been left. The other good news is they also know how to rebuild the characters for newer commercials and stuff in the same way like 55 years ago when the original came out, although they sometimes don’t make the characters look true to their original form in the original special, and they have different designs to them most of the time, but the closest thing true to the original special is that 2007 Aflac commercial with the characters and this Rudolph 4D attraction, which they unfortunately leave out most of the scenes and have none of the songs, but the characters look like newer and true to the original and better animated versions of the 1964 animated versions of them in the special. :)
they are in good enough condition for me, I would have auctioned on those in a heartbeat. Rudolph the red nose reindeer is my absolute FAVORITE Christmas movie and the Rudolph wasn't in that bad condition
Too many ignorant, irresponsible fools out there who can't take care of their rare and valuable stuff, and the worst part is a lot of these people don't even know what they have is rare or valuable in the first place. Imagine what's already been destroyed or thrown away. There's countless priceless treasures in our landfills. Thank you Antiques Roadshow for at least trying to educate people and save our history.
In 1964 there wasn't a market for movie/tv props. These were made for a production and given away. They also weren't made to be lasting keepsakes, and I've read that many of them were quite fragile. As the video said, these were displayed, probably until they started falling apart and then put into storage. Nobody expected them to melt.
Ugh! Beloved characters that so many have loved, carelessly thrown into a hot attic to melt! Did she have any idea what she possessed meant so much to so many? It’s horrifying. Like taking Jim Henson’s puppets and letting them rot in a dank basement. Or possessing a Monet, or a Mucha and letting your child scribble all over it. Ugh! So many artists worked on those! So many people loved them! So many people would’ve taken care of them as they should’ve been! I’m happy at least that these two are now restored and in good hands. They need to be in a museum somewhere.
Before you start criticizing her for storing them in the attic, the originals were thrown in the trash by production, and she happened to save them. yes, storing them in that way wasn't the best idea, but how could someone know that? back then, there wasn't as much of an instant feedback connection when making a movie or show as we have now. the reason this is considered a "classic" is because it took decades for the movie to impact lives.
@@nwesterbeckmaster That is true. Back then, no one knew that such things would be actually valuable, as there was no internet, and as someone else said, they were thrown away because Rankin Bass didn't find anymore use for the puppets. But on the bright side, they can make replicas that are not perfect, but are close to it, as they have made new puppets for use in commercials (like that one where Rudolph and company talked about Aflac).

Ugh. A lot were melted in the attic! Sounds like my mom who liked to put old antique photos in the hot garage and store them there, where they faded away!
Thank god, after this clown was finished selling them off at auction, they went to people who restored them (vid on youtube, it's rlly neat) "Restoration of rudolph the rednose reindeer puppet" or something like that
Came here from the restoration video (th-cam.com/video/o_48Yv3EvrY/w-d-xo.html). I was in sobbing tears at hearing most of the puppets no longer survive. They all worked their way into our collective hearts. I'm grateful that the original Rudolph and Santa were conserved and restored.
Why these models are not in some sort of museum I cannot understand. To give you all some perspective, I grew up in Honduras in the 80s where every saturday morning during the christmas season all Rankin Bass christmas films would play dubbed in Spanish. They are beloved by children all over the world not just in the States. These models are priceless. Poor little rudolph without his bulb nose 😭
Glad at least these two were saved and now are in good hands. My aunt had one of the pods from the 1980's remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers, sadly it was made of latex and it eventually just rotted away, there really wasn't anything that could be done to save it. I guess the same kind of thing happened with the latex fish from the original Piranha movie which I think the director had kept and the "Otto Pilot" from Airplane!, which that director kept in his garage, was plastic and eventually just fell apart, sad when pieces of movie history are lost.
