I lost my daughter Charlie (named after my grandfather) some years ago. This song will never not make me cry like a baby.

My dad sent me this song some time ago before he passed away. It's always going to hold a special place in my heart

I saw the two lads in concert last night, 22/01/24, in Whelans in Dublin. What a show! They were absolutely brilliant. Full house and you could hear a pin drop. Best gig I've been at in a long, long, time.

When the boys played with Sara Jarosz & her band .... the boys in their own act set DID CHARLIE but, it was introduced by a wise cracking Joey ..... who framed the "arrogance" of his band mate in composing a song about a kid he not only had not ever had .... but, not even having met the wife to be gal ..... it is a riot !!! ( PBS show some years now) GBjj

Am I the only one who finds this song as pretty as it is weird?

The Cadence of the song reminds me a bit of Dylan

I heard some people on a podcast once describe this song as "creepy" and "Hallmark cliche" which I don't think is fair. It's obvious that it's a guy describing his naive dream of something he hasn't experienced (fatherhood), and I'm not a fan of that old cliche of the father telling his daughter boys are bad, but he seems kind of gently humorously aware that he's not speaking with perfect wisdom and experience, and I think there's good ideas mixed up with the cliches and jokes. Like "Come to me with problems, I swear I won't go try and solve them, I'll only tell you everything I know ..." That seems like a constructive and humble thing for a parent to do, supporting your kids but not swooping in to fix everything for them, instead equipping them to learn to take care of themselves.
