Wow !! All I’m seeing is Gerald Qualter 😅🔥❤ what a gorgeous man !!! Wow and he’s not too young for me as he’d be what .. about 180 years old now ?! .. ahhh he is lovely o hope he had a long happy life and had kids to spread those good looking genes ❤
If I had lived back in the day, I would want to have lived in New York City. I can’t imagine how hard life must’ve been in rural America. As in farms and ranches.😢
This is proof that life is too short and that time has accelerated much too quickly since the 60's. Many of the photos was in my grandmothers time and look at us now. Heck even in my time, we no longer live in the same life line. A much different world. It's like we were all put in a vortex and spit out in a different time and space. Heck I'm only 61 and I lived with the milkman coming to the door - party line phones we had to dial, with many phone numbers with words you spelled out instead of numbers to dial. We were the first family to have a coloured TV which also had a dial and I was the remote control. Heck I could go on! I love seeing the old photos! For those thinking the photo of the husband and wife switching clothing was strange - it was intended to be funny. It was mocking the fact that women wanted a voice, that they too could make the same decisions their husbands made. The photo was probably taken for a cabinet card to be shared for fun.

On 1:23 this picture was taken in either 1908 or 1909. The billboard on the right advertises Francis Wilson "When knights were born". Francis Wilson was a renown comedian in the early 1900's and the play "When knights were born" first hit the stage in 1908 and had over 500 performances.
I have lateral kin folk that fought against the English in 1812 up in Niagara, a bunch showed up in 1891 landed in Manhattan. Most were elevator mechanics as am I. If they were giving on day back, I’m sure they would happily jump back into their grave disappointed by what they witnessed today. Thanks for the video.
My Great Grandmother would tell me that old horses would die in the street. They were too big to move so they would be left in the street until someone could dispose of the body. Mind you, my childhood self never asked about information like that. I just wanted to know about the clothing and what Old NY was like. Thanks Great Grandma for that little piece of trauma.
I think the 1898 Brooklyn Bridge walkway photo is wrongly dated. There is a billboard above the walkway advertising Francis Wilson starring in the play When Knights Were Bold. This was a play that first appeared in the US on Broadway in 1906 and later as a film short in 1908.
QUESTION........... HOW DID A PRIMITIVE PEOPLE TRAVELING ON HORSE AND BUGGY, LIVING IN WOODEN HUTS WITH NO PLUMBING BUILT THOSE BEAUTIFUL BUILDINGS...??
Sometimes back in those days when they were photographed sitting in a chair, they were actually dead, but made to look alive. Thats because some families couldnt afford to take photos of loved ones
I enjoyed this very much. Wasn't Mathew Brady the photographer and not the subject? Also, I think "High Bridge" is now called the Alexander Hamilton bridge.
Wonderful, historic photos and excellent restoration. I do have a question: In many of the cases, how do the colorists know how to assign a color? I always imagined most colors were black, gray, and some shade of blue. Do the colorists ever assign a color that really wasn’t feasible or popular back then? Thanks
@BrightStyle...small point, but at time stamp 3:20, you cite Alfred Barrett as being an "architector." I don't think that is a word. I believe you mean "Architect"

What are we seeing at 5:55. A man and wife wearing gender swapped clothes? Any explanation?
He most certainly was handsome
Yes, he was good-looking!
He was very steamy.
Great job I’m 60 & love seeing someone’s great grandparents, mine died when I was young
So the husband and wife with baby on knee… why were their heads switched. The man was on the woman and woman was on the man’s body
The family portrait of the couple and baby makes me 🤣🤣 The couple clearly had a sense of humour.
Amazing... Even back then.😏
@@robvegart "Even back then"?! You think a sense of humor is only a modern day thing, huh. Ignorance is bliss.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤beautiful. I really enjoyed these pictures.❤❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you very much !
6:04 looks like husband and wife switch roles
❤❤❤❤👍👍👍👍THANK YOU FOR THESE PICTURES
❤
Gorgeous second picture of you gman in uniform.
It's so cool.
Male Model for sure
Thanks for sharing this amazing video ❤
Thank you for your comment
OMG I had to stop the video and get a good look at the family portrait Lol that is hilarious 🤣🤣 Emma Gibson was a ballet dancer 🙄
Handsome young soldier Gerard Qualter!!!!
Gerard Qualter had model looks. Bet he had the local girls beating down his door
And later, Miss Louisa Ryan’s astonishing raw beauty was captured brilliantly in her portrait!
Gay
Love from York England🏴🇬🇧
Fascinating!
Thank you.
If I had lived back in the day, I would want to have lived in New York City. I can’t imagine how hard life must’ve been in rural America. As in farms and ranches.😢
Apparently, New york was a smelly, highly polluted city
Eh hard to say. I heard some stories of farms doing ok during the Great Depression because they could self sustain
Interesting! That poor horse. 😥
Looks like the poor horse was worked to death.
My great-great-grandfather moved from Germany to Manhattan in the 1850’s. He was a grocer and lived there for the rest of his life.

It does seem odd that her clothes would fit him, and vice versa. He looks to be a fair bit bigger.
or perhaps they were each other;s beards ;)
Thank you.... Great and rare images... Seldom seen before!
Thank you very much, I really appreciate it.
Absolutely loved this video! I can't wait to see more. 😊
Thank you so much !
Beautiful 1890s new york picture with trees

Impressed by your meticulous work and attention to detail..Thanks
4:05 - I see where they got the inspiration for Alfred E. Neuman...
Gerald was a hottie, bet all the girls liked him.😊 Alfred looked like he could be in ZZTop.
Gorgeous that's for sure. Wonder how his life unfolded? Did he survive the war?
@@sandrazed6089 I suppose we could check it out.
that's one hefty ballet dancer!
The Sugar Plum Fairy
The music's is as enjoyable as the photographs.
NO, the music is horrible

The pretzel 🥨 vendor got me.
Wonderful 👍👏👏
Many thanks
Thank you.
Огромное спасибо за фото!
There are beautiful! Thank you for this posting. Recommendation: I would like to see the original photo followed by the enhanced/colorized version.
Gerard Qualter pic is shown with the negative flipped. Buttons are on the right for men and his buckle reads backwards.
Loved it! Thank you!!!
❤

Gerald the soldier was HOT!
I thought the same!
You should put side by side pix of 1880/ 1980 pix etc!! To see the change in 100 yers
Gees what a nice Job Thank you so very much ❤️
The first impression! No DEI? Nice!
Yaaawn
Amazing thank you so very much❤
Thank you for your kind words, I greatly appreciate it.
VERY Interesting!!!!
Muchas gracias 👍 me encanta el vídeo, suerte ❤
Muchas gracias ❤
THANK YOU!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤🎉
Great job.
Many thanks.
A great journey into the past of NY. Being colorized, makes these fotos even more interesting!
Thank you so much !
Sadly enough it's black and white photography that makes scenes look ancient
❤
Is that a real picture of the Civil War soldier Gerard Qualter? He's incredibly handsome.
Love the opening photo but it is of Broadway in Saratoga Springs, New York
Thank you!

NYC looked so much better and cleaner back then. Less buildings, less congestion.
thank you very good love
Thanks a Lot !
Muchas gracias por compartir!!

👏
That was way cool!
Many thanks
QUESTION........... HOW DID A PRIMITIVE PEOPLE TRAVELING ON HORSE AND BUGGY, LIVING IN WOODEN HUTS WITH NO PLUMBING BUILT THOSE BEAUTIFUL BUILDINGS...??
Wow !! I really love your music selection !!! What is some of the titles ???
I never thought I would ever hear careless whispers being played by a jazz band.😂
I heard it too. I think it kept repeating the same few lines, so there’d be no copyright issues.
Three cheers for our UNION men in BLUE!!! 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
5:55 Nice coloration job but it looks like the husband and wife's heads were swapped.during the process.
The Statue of George Washington, I wonder if it’s still there in Union square after all if it wasn’t for him we’d all be speaking English 😂🤣👍🏻
👍👍
Thanks
corridos during the civil war pics nice!!!
❤🎉
I wonder how many of those civil war soldiers made it home?
Well, none is alive today
A lot did not
They'd be long dead by now anyway...
The first photo of Fifth Avenue has a car parked on the street so not the 1890's but about 20 years later.
The wedding photo doesn't seem right for 1890, the dress looks nearer 1920s
Like the music too…
No
The second picture is Saratoga, not Fifth Avenue
Sometimes back in those days when they were photographed sitting in a chair, they were actually dead, but made to look alive. Thats because some families couldnt afford to take photos of loved ones
The elizabeth morgan photo is 1900-1904 due to the hairstyle which is Gibson girl, and the high neck lace shirtwaist
👍🌹
Thank you !

I did a google search for Gerald Qualter and found nothing. Does anyone have access to better records? If so, do you know his story? Thank you.
Found New York enlistments....John Qualter age 24 Killed in Action. No Gerald. yet
5:55 ?
7:52 had clear water in the 1800’s ?
Like in a time machine
❤

Congrats on your work for this video. I enjoyed it but dude, lose the multi tracks music. I muted the video. Choose a background loop.
The first photo, supposedly 5th Avenue, is actually Main Street in Saratoga Springs.
Omg how very weird role reversal ofcouple with baby😮
