- Making a set of Arm and Side Chairs Part 1 of 2 by Doucette and Wolfe Furniture Makers. We made a set of 8 chairs, 2 Arm and 6 side chairs. These chairs are made of solid mahogany, with carved and shaped posts and back splats with a shell carved Crest Rail. Part 2 will show carving the ball and claw feet, the rail mortise and tenon joinery with through wedged tenons and making the arms on the 2 Arm Chairs.
These chairs are based on an original chair by Eliphalet Chapin of Connecticut. We measured an original example at Yale University Art Gallery.

Doing a “One-Off” is one thing but knocking down identical Multiples is another animal requiring a discipline which most mortals never develop.

As with so many things, watching a craftsman work is like truly understanding why this is still an art. I can cut wood, shape odds and ends into an everyday usable piece of functioning furniture, but as of yet, I still have not become one with the tool as you fine craftsmen are. This guy is so talented at such a young age. It appears so easy to him and he never seems to make mistakes. It’s truly mind boggling how he can crank out multiple parts, beautifully in seemingly no time. His tools are surgically sharp, an art in itself! It makes your average joe woodworker look like a hack!

Pure magic you have mastered the use of hand tools and you can get them to perform to there maximum is beautiful to see. You have also mastered the dark art of tool sharpening. You're woodwork skills show no bounds. You're clients must be very very proud to own you're work. Your at the top end of furniture makers definitely in the top 3 in the world congratulations to you for such perfection.

what type of plane is that you are using to do the concave and convex bends in the crest and splat?

I've watched most of your videos, I don't recall ever seeing a piece of sandpaper being used. I was taught that sanding opens the grane to accept finish and planning closes the grane. Is there any sanding before finishing? Or is it all hand planed first?
Dan Mayer, hey. I saw your comment and I am an Amish born and trained carpenter(who has since left home). We for the most part never use sandpaper just razor sharp hand tools. If anything sandpaper would close the grain because it is filling each pore with small particles of dust that would need to be carefully vacuumed or tacked off of the surface that is to be finished. On all of my projects I don’t touch sandpaper (outside of sanding between coats of finish) now and I think it gives a much better finish. I believe most people don’t do it this way because it requires a ton of skill and experience where sanding does not. This can also only be done on solid wood pieces. Any plywood would need a sanding to achieve a smooth finish. Also would like to say that this guy is an incredible craftsman and until you’ve practiced it a million times like he has you probably won’t get the same finish with the same tools. So if you wanted to try to do it like this I would suggest a very inexpensive material to start with until you get your sharpening and technique to the point where you make something you are happy with. Hope this helps a bit.
