問：這位同學他是北京房山周口店趙居士。此次前來拜訪你，因為你太忙了不好打攪，所以只好寫信向你請教，我回家耐心的等待你給予的指教。第一個，我是回族，皈依佛門是否可以？這是不是對回族的背叛？如果可以皈依佛門，往生儀式按哪個宗教做？
答：佛教說實在話，它不是宗教，它是教育，就是現在人所講的多元文化的教育。我想很多人對於《地藏經》都很熟悉，你看《地藏經》裡面第一個得度的，婆羅門女。婆羅門不是佛教，婆羅門教，婆羅門教就是現代的印度教。所以在佛經裡面，你可以看到當時有許多宗教的學者皈依佛門，跟釋迦牟尼佛學習，這絕對不是叛教，如果是叛教釋迦牟尼佛不會接受的。我早年就講得很清楚，你信教，你跟神的關係是父子的關係、主僕的關係，這個要搞清楚。你皈依佛門，跟釋迦牟尼佛來學，是師生關係，不違背。你在家有父母，在學校有老師，沒有衝突，所以可以學習，絕不違背宗教。如果你要是學習好了，對你所學的宗教一定會更好，因為佛教所追求的是智慧，只有智慧才能解決問題，才能提升自己，提升自己的宗教。
所以我最近，都看緣分，因緣成熟我想休息都沒辦法。印度尼西亞是世界上最大的回教國家，我在這一年當中去訪問過五次，最近還要去，一年當中要去六次，這樣的密切。我跟回族的關係非常之好，處得非常之好，最近回教大學送一個榮譽博士學位給我。他們如果真的做，我會幫助它建立一個「多元文化學院」，十年之後這個學院就可以建成世界上第一個多元文化大學。這個學校就是宗教大學，每個宗教成立一個學院，這裡有佛學院、有基督學院、有伊斯蘭學院。將來這些宗教的傳教師不會打架，不會再鬧事了。為什麼？同學，一個學校畢業的，不同科系而已。
所以，他們問我宗教怎麼樣團結，我說現在密切交流這是形式上。根本上的團結，要辦個宗教大學，所有宗教傳教師一定是這個大學畢業的，這才能獲得全世界人的肯定。過去是個妄想，常常這樣想，沒有想到能夠在印度尼西亞落實，怎麼想也想不到。而且這個國家領導人跟宗教領袖們都這麼樣的熱情，我到那邊去他們把我看作顧問，有什麼問題都來找我談，所以是緣成熟了就要做，緣不成熟，絕不攀緣，這個你要懂得。如果我們覺得將來願意到極樂世界見阿彌陀佛，行，你就用佛教的；你願意到天堂去見安拉，那麼你就用回教的，都很好。
*Question:* As a member of the Hui ethnic group, is it acceptable for me to take refuge in Buddhism? Would this be considered a betrayal of my Hui background? If I can take refuge in Buddhism, which religious rituals should be followed when I pass away?
*Answer:* Buddhism is not actually a religion; it is an education, akin to what is now called multicultural education. Many people are familiar with the *Earth Store Sutra*, where the first person to attain enlightenment is a Brahmin woman. The Brahmin religion is today's Hinduism. The Buddhist scriptures show that many religious scholars from different backgrounds took refuge in Buddhism and learned from Shakyamuni Buddha. This is not considered a betrayal. If it were, Shakyamuni Buddha would not have accepted them.
I have always made it clear that in your religion, your relationship with God is like that of a parent and child or a master and servant. In Buddhism, your relationship with Shakyamuni Buddha is that of a teacher and student, which does not conflict with your existing faith. At home, you have your parents, and at school, you have your teachers; these relationships do not conflict. Therefore, you can learn Buddhism without betraying your religion. If you learn well, it will enhance your understanding and practice of your own religion because Buddhism seeks wisdom, which can help solve problems and improve oneself and one’s religious practice.
Recently, I have been visiting Indonesia, the largest Muslim country, and I have developed very good relations with the Hui people there. The Islamic university in Indonesia even awarded me an honorary doctorate. I am helping to establish a Multicultural Academy there, which could become the world’s first multicultural university. This university will include colleges for Buddhism, Christianity, and Islam. Future religious teachers will be educated together, fostering harmony and understanding.
To achieve true unity among religions, we need to establish a religious university where all religious teachers graduate from the same institution. This would gain worldwide recognition. While this idea seemed impossible in the past, it is now being realized in Indonesia due to the support of both government and religious leaders.
If you wish to be reborn in the Pure Land to meet Amitabha Buddha, you can follow Buddhist rituals. If you prefer to go to Heaven to meet Allah, you can follow Islamic rituals. Both are perfectly acceptable.
