The one and only Queen of Metal Angela Gassow!!! Lead the way for many female metal vocalist. A true icon, legend and a leader for woman in a male dominated genre!!
The original Queen of Metal is Doro Pesch. She was doing all of that before Angela.

Angela Gossow is the greatest metal vocalist of all time. There greats before her, there have been greats since her, but she is now and always will be the greatest. She was an absolute phenomenon beyond compare.
Angela was a beast beyond comparison.
The Arch Demoness of metal herself! Other people controll the crowd, she possessed the crowd!
Actually she's a really small woman, it's just that she seems to grow to about double size as soon as she sets foot on stage. Saw her from about third row in a small club back in the day and she was one of the most "scary" vocalists I ever saw live.
Man, her power stance is something else.
Shes so tiny but has the aura of a god damn tank.
She has perfected that to a level Ive never seen before or since.
She just radiates pure brute force.
Angela Gossow will always be the metal queen, she's not just a female growling pioneer but also pioneered professional growl vocal coaching and fostered/inspired a whole generation of female metal vocalists. :) She's semi-retired from singing and acts as the band's manager now but she recently made an awesome guest appearance in Amaranthe's 'Do or die'. :)
Still to this day that last minute of the song gives me goosebumps
Sabina Classen vocalist for Holy Moses was doing this back in 1981, the first true death metal frontwoman and still going strong.
She was way ahead of her time.
There are several beautiful women who can scream like demons. Then there is Angela. Crazy fact: she did this for 14 years before hiring Alissa as her own replacement. Alissa's no slouch, but Angela is unique.
Angela did it for a LOT longer than 14 years. She had been doing that since 1991. Alissa can't hold a candle to Angela. To be honest Alissa is a terrible vocalist all around, very wooden or plastic. Zero emotion, zero range, no energy.

From what I know Angela Gossow has been in bands since the early 90's so she's certainly one of the first, if not the first.
Angela was amazing; prefer her over Alissa, vocally.
Y'all should check out Kittie, too. I wouldn't call it "uplifting", but it's pretty impressive to listen to their junior albums when they were fresh out of high school (Spit and Oracle). They had some changes in their line up on later albums, and their sound changed over the years, but they were always one of my favourite all female bands. Any genre.
One of the reasons why I much prefer Angela is that she strikes metal poses whereas Alissa strikes Instagram poses :>

I agree, Notch. And PageMonster, no. That is not an "insult to Angela". Angela chose a good front-person, but no one could ever truly replace her. Alissa is good, but she isn't Angela.
Added detail this song was about the 15th in the concert so she's got stamina too.
Angela Gossow and her replacement Alissa White Gluz are both great vocalists however Angela is streets ahead subjectively. Her vocals were raw, feral, and primal.
I love Alyssa's performance with Arch Enemy but Angela will forever be my favorite.

As much as there's some great modern female metal vocalists, I don't think any come close to Angela.

You're right. Jeff Loomis replaced Nick Cordle in 2014, who replaced Christopher Amott (founder Michael Amott's younger brother) 2-3 years earlier. How about a reaction/review to an Arch Enemy song with Alissa and Jeff? How about "the world is yours"?

The Queen Beast. Only 5ft tall, but she is a giant in this genre. The originator has never been surpassed. Sadly missed, but absolutely never forgotten.

In the late 80s and 90s the band Holy moses was one of the first death metal bands with a female singer. Then again the leadsinger didnt growl as Angela but it came close...

Arch Enemy with Angela Gossow (this woman, she retired now and the band has a new singer) will always be one of my favorite bands. This whole concert is a masterpiece. You should try In this moment - whore. Another band with a female singer with attitude and a lot of talent.
Maria Brink of In This Moment is one of my two favorite voices, alongside Tatiana (though the two have radically different styles and are very different people - stylistically, I'd compare ITM more to Otep)
Angela came out of retirement to join her other clients, Amaranthe, on "Do Or Die" this year. She still has a mighty roar!
You can't leave out Lauren Hart from Once Human, or Avienne from Vintersea. Both very beautiful and talented singers with some serious attitude..

Other earlier bands like this that you might want to try...Walls of Jericho, Holy Moses, and Eths is a French band, French lyrics, but still great stuff.
I can't decide if I like the Angela AE or the Alissa AE. ...I like them both.

Fun reaction. Angela is badass. Kittie was the first band to start performing with female growls in 1996, while Angela started with AE in 2000. However, Angela has demos going back to 1991 but just couldn't break into the scene until later. Otep also started in 2000, but I don't know how far back her practice of growling skills goes. Incidentally, Otep inspired Tatiana when Tati was 15, back in about 2002. If you are interested in Otep's work, I'd suggest the YT video of Ghost Flowers off the Confrontation live DVD. Cheers!
Do what now? There's so much wrong with what you said, I don't know where to begin. First, Sabina Classen of Holy Moses has been doing growls since 1981 and STILL does it. Second, they were legitimate performing bands with names and albums called Asmodina and Mistress. Just because they didn't necessarily do full-length albums (in today's standards) or really have a label, it doesn't make them any less of an album. Also, Asmodina did have one full length album released in 1997 called Inferno, but they broke up in 1998 due to a bad experience with their label. In fact, she just released a remaster of that exact album last year.
