@sarahtheissen : Thanks! I'm working on my PhD in Film and Cognitive Semiotics; my favorite thing to do is to help people notice how the movie works in subtle ways on us. The fact that you love it so much, but will now perhaps view it with a new perspective, makes me very happy. Thank you for the feedback!
Wow this was so interesting. Gattaca is my all time favourite movie and I've seen it like a dozen time but I've never realised all the little details you pointed out (green vs red, windows and mirrors, barriers, stairs). I think I have to watch it again today ;)
Think about it this way: The world of Gattaca is a futuristic type one with technology so advanced, yet the style of this new era is one of the past. Andrew Nichol is making a juxtaposition of the past and the future showing the ironic nature of how people live in a place where things are meant to be modern and super advanced. I know this comment is about a year late, but I thought I might as well make it.
Unless of course they discover somewhere down the road that a certain genetic make up allows one to be more determined (human spirit) than others then the premise of this movie falls apart.
@captclassy : Thank you! Yes, you are right in your logical assumption that the brain notices many things that make us "like" certain films. List other movies that you love (which you also suspect are working on your subconscious somehow) and perhaps from your list I can create another film analysis video...
Not necessarily, this is research. My teacher gave us booklets and even done an analysis with the class on the whole movie and it's symbolism, metaphors and the like. If we copy directly, word for word, then it is 'copying'. However, if we use what you've found out, as well as info from other sources, then we aren't copying and you have not passed our exams for us.
What in the world would make you think that I would copy your work and pass it as mine? The failure comment was meant as a joke and, nothing else. Are you not aware that college/university level work is checked for plagerism? The research was not on the movie but on genetic engineering.
Great video, thanks. Excellent summary of just how much thought went into this movie.

This is a really classic movie.More like a extended version of a black mirror episode.
Quite true. Very powerful film, a masterpiece. And no special effects.
Very good analysis. I really enjoyed this film and the message it conveys. This video helped me to gain a greater understanding of the film.

this is so good. has saved me from my english exam failure
Very thoughtful analysis, thanks for sharing it. Why, do you think, is the
Gattaca future so retro in its aesthetics?
Thank you, for helping me with my team project, but I see its not the first time you somehow save a student from failure. : )

AWESOME. Oh I am so relieved. Taking down my reply...
You're welcome. That makes me sad.
Thank you. Sounds like I passed it, not you. :-(
