I dip the fish in the sauce. Mix it with rice & eat. They gave u 2 types of sauce. We also eat without the rice. Just enjoy the fish dip in sauce. U r very polite & can/should blend well with the locals. Hope more msians will subscribe to ur channel. Hope u have a nice time exploring malaysia.

The 2 type of dips they brought you were soy dip with chilli, and the other one is tamarind dip. Yes, you can just mix together when eating because that’s how normally we eat it anyway. By the way, enjoy your tour of the East Coast. There are plenty more food you can try!

    • @CrissyUnfiltered

Thank you, I figured it was Tamarind. Mixing was soooo delicious, I love the food here. We absolutely loved the east coast and are thinking of going back. Spent some time in Kuala Terengganu and Kota Bharu but definitely not enough time.

@@CrissyUnfiltered hi Crissy, here are some of my recommendations if you’re still in Kuantan
      1. Cendol Air Putih (located in Jalan Air Putih - cendol is pandan flavoured rice jelly noodles eaten as dessert with ice)
      2. Hoi Yin Curry Mee - open during breakfast
      3. Warung Mok Na or Warung Pok Su & Mok Su - for afternoon snacks - try ‘Satar’ a type of grilled fish paste wrapped in pandan leaves & also lots of fried seafood & traditional Malay dishes
      4. If you enjoy coffee - the whole stretch of Jalan Besar there are so many cafés - Western style & local style cafes. My favorite local style cafe is Kuantan Pickers. But you can walk the whole stretch of the road there are many other notable & instagrammable cafes (if you’re into that).
      5. Satay Zul for chicken or beef skewers with peanut sauce
      6. Eda Yasin Nasi Minyak in Tanjung Api - traditional East Coast style breakfast
      7. Hai Peng Kopitiam - Peranakan style breakfast, try their Kaya toast or Roti Bakar (toast with coconut pandan spread)
      8. Mee Calong in Beserah - noodle in fish broth

Too much awesomeness in this review ❤
Personally, I'm not a big fish eater but when I'm having any I would love to have it be cook in specific way/ as different dish
Siakap (sea bass) - sweet sour/3 rasa, grilled
    Kerapu (grouper) - grilled
    Pari (stingray) - grilled
    Jenahak (snapper) - soup/broth
Kembong (Indian mackerel) - deep fried, sambal
Tenggiri (Spanish mackerel) - deep fried
Salmon and tuna - raw/sashimi or with sushi rice
Cod/haddock - I don't really eat this in Malaysia but I love as battered fish n' chip
The sour gravy that you had is mostly likely a seafood tom yum.. as Kuantan geographically in the eastern coast of West Malaysia some of the local cuisines are heavily influenced by other states in the same area, Kelantan and Terengganu..these two states were historically part of Siamese Kingdom (Thai).. if you travel further north and east coast, it's very easy to observe those dishes..but these days those food are actually available all around
In west coast, Selangor you can go to Tanjung Karang for ikan bakar
In East Malaysia this is another heaven for seafood lover, seafoods are as fresher as those from East Coast because they're from South China Sea ocean

Thank you so much. Wow I used to be particular with how I enjoyed my fish too. I normally dislike ordering fish at restaurants and prefer to cook it at home. I have become more open minded through my travels with trying the many ways fish can be cooked. Maybe one day I will even develop the love for the fish head 😂. Snapper is normally my go too. I’ve tried sushi before in Japan and back home in America but just haven’t developed a palate for raw fish just yet. I agree, when having fish and chips I love the cod but also salmon (which I had in Canada) Even when I may not like things I still give it a try.
So much for me to discover here 😊

Just the grilled fish and the sambal put on top of the rice is sufficient. You don't necessarily have to eat with your hands just ask for a spoon and fork. They'll understand.
The jengkol or stink bean has medicinal benefits especially for diabetics but the only drawback is that it smells after you go to the toilet. So just to let you know so that you are not caught by surprise.
Looks like you're getting better with your hands. I agree with you, grilled food taste better because it makes the ingredient caramelised and also gives it the smokey flavour.
