The clothes Oolong wears are the clothes worn by Chinese people. In the past, all Chinese people wore this kind of clothes. The original Dragon Ball was set in China.
I don't think there is anything too deep with Oolong, it's just a sly gag of him being a communist pig. You are right about the Journey to the West, it does have a pig character which Oolong was based on. Goku, Bulma and Oolong are all losely based on characters from Journey to the West. Tatsuta Naoki voices Oolong and he does a great job with all the different transformations. Speaking of voice actors, it is sad looking bad on these classic episodes and realising the amount of people who worked on them that have passed away. Yanami Joji who is the Narrator passed in 2021, Tsuru Hiromi who is the voice of Bulma passed in 2017, Gori Daisuke who is the voice of Umigame or Sea Turtle passed in 2010, Miyauchi Kohei who voices Kame Sen'nin passed in 1995 during Dragon Ball Z's run, Kikuchi Shunsuke who was the composer for both Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z passed in 2021, and of course most recently; series creator, author and illustrator Toriyama Akira passed on 1st of March this year. May they all rest in peace. Nozawa Masako still voices Son Goku to this very day even at the age of 87. Tatsuta Naoki is still the voice of Oolong although Oolong has hardly any lines these day. In modern times he is more well known as the Narrator for Dragon Ball Super which is a role he took over from Yanami Joji in 2015 due to his declinging health.
he really just dress like that because he is chinese, all the characters in Dragonball are inspired in chinese legends or chinese movies, and no the nazis had nothing to do with comunists, they even claim the comunists changed the meaning of the word socialism, wich is why they are anti comunists even thought their party was called nacional socialist
“Both Nazism and Communism had an ideology which was ostensibly scientific, because the Nazis even believed that their racist doctrine had a scientific basis. They even tried to prove it by measuring skulls and God knows what else. And the Communists, of course, believed that their idea of the progress of history was based on scientific analysis. They claimed to be able to foretell the future, the fate of the class struggle. They were always wrong, most notably in Germany in the 1930s. They were always wrong. But they did believe that they had the key, a scientific key to the understanding of past and even future history. So both were, in effect, pseudo-scientific ideologies. But both share an apocalyptic view, and more than that, a millenarian view, because they both look forward to a final struggle, a great judgment visited upon an evil world, out of which will emerge a purified world. [And it] is this fantasy of a purified world, a cleansed world, which is so enormously pernicious and which has brought so much catastrophe upon us in this present century. In the 20th century, those of us who are not Communists or Nazis, people who (in the broad sense of the word) belong to the liberal, democratic tradition, find something very strange in these creeds. And the more they look at them, the stranger they appear.” So anyway I read some stuff like this (just an example excerpt) that lead me to think that. Also (what lead me to ask this question) was the following: “Communism is a specific form of the broader philosophy of socialism. Communism is further left on the political spectrum than socialism. However, both communism and socialism share similar understandings of the relationships between economic structures and social conditions, and between the individual and the state.” So since Nazi means “Nationalsozialistische Deutsche Arbeiterpartei (National Socialist German Workers' Party)” I think it’s a fair question to ask in order to gain more insight (I say this last part not to the original commenter but to the person who’s seemingly implying I’m stupid for asking the question)
About Oolong's outfit, one also has to consider that around the time the manga was being written, Toriyama also drew himself wearing it (called a Mao suit) as an avatar in the magazine's section for author comments. From what I've read, this kind of formal attire was still relatively common to see in China back when Toriyama travelled there for inspiration, so it's possible he simply liked the style of the outfit and thought Oolong would look good in it.
If he just thought that it would look good on Oolong, why did he change it after they dealt with him blackmailing the village? If you watch the episode and understand the context behind Oolong wearing the uniform, it does make a lot more sense than thinking he just happens to be drawn inside a communist uniform from china.
@@kenzovich9225 Like many things in Toriyama's writing, the reason is actually pretty simple: characters in Dragon Ball change clothes pretty often (I mean, just look at Bulma); the first time Oolong does so is when they're in the middle of the desert, and later on when he's living in a city he adopts their way of dressing. Though it did come to my mind that given the outfit's reputation, not in present day but back when the chapter was first written, coupled with the later reveal of his mansion, it served to indicate us that Oolong likes to present himself as more sophisticated than he actually is. It's important to consider that Mao suits were considered the Chinese equivalent of a business suit before they were slowly phased out; it's relatively recent that their political leaders are the only ones who still wear them.
@@kenzovich9225 I thought so as well. Either Chinese or North Korean. But you say Chinese. It fits. Not the only time I saw this in anime. A "subtle" jab
I always thought that as DB have references with the monkey king story, so chinese classic litterature, Oolong with the communist star on his hat and Mao clothes is a chinese guy. Even the house he made looks chinese. By the way, Goku's tail come from the same chinese story. Lots of olders anime have japanese, chinese, etc...legendary content from those cultural things they share for centuries
I read a long time ago that the clothes that Oolong wears are inspired by the clothes that Chinese communist leader Mao Tse Tung wore. That is why the red star in the hat.
Hello ! I'm a child of the 80's and I grew up with Dragon Ball. It's one of the main reason why I got into drawing, and now in my 40's, I've been working in the animation industry for over 15 years. Love your reactions to this series. This series is criminally drown under the weight of DBZ, and I feel like it's actually the most solid part of the entire series, with actual characters, and actual stakes (instead of endless power creeping and great OG characters rendered useless because of said power creep). Always great to see people giving it more light (and really happy to see a youngster like you still connecting to its humor, that would make a lot of gen z cringe hard, nowadays). For Oolong being dressed like a communist Chinese, you have to put things into context. The whole premise of the Dragon Ball series is a loose adaptation of Journey to the West, one of the most famous classics of the Chinese literature, from 400 years ago. So obviously, lot of the imagery had to be Chinese inspired (the landscapes, the demons, the artistic direction, like the kinto'un, the martial arts...). So the show having started in the early-mid 80's, and Communist China hasn't opened itself yet to the world and almost everybody still wore that kind of chinese commie clothes, it's no surprise that one of the characters would end up dressed like that. Let's not forget that before Dragon Ball, Toriyama was already super famous for Dr.Slump, which was through and through a gag manga (with a main protagonist obsessed with poop, so you can tell the kind of humor Toriyama would go for ^^). Dragon Ball originally also started as a gag manga, so it's really not that deep. Maybe there was a little dig at Mao for, in the rumors, pretending to be Communist in front of the country, and hoarding a harem of young virgins privately in his own palace, that may have some truth to it, since 80's Japan was still on top of its economic miracle game before the bubble popped, while communist China on the other side looked ever impoverished, so both being kind of the polar opposite of each other in the cold war, that may have been a poor taste dig (like, look at how civilized we are). We'll never know.
Oolong wears what resembles a Chinese Communist uniform. I'm not sure it's a mock, though. Pilaf's hat has a red star and Mai has the same red stars on her coat too.
@@cloudyriverFascism isn't mentioned either but DBZ Movie12 has Hitler in it. Obviously they mocked him. I don't see how you think the symbolism they used to mock communism is not obvious enough, when even this youtuber who watches the series for the first time has identified it as such.

@@nthdgree5078 The Nazis were anti-communist. And Hitler called himself a National Socialist cause he wanted to redefine socialism.

Humor had to be in the context of time. The 80's has a complete different view on social relations than today's.
So always take things in the context of time

BTW loving your dragon ball reactions, keep them coming.
A few years ago though I saw a guy that did Pokémon reactions and he had way too many copyright issues. Even some Pokémon game videos get taken down 😅
They seem to be especially *especially* strict
Nice!
🥰😍👍
Why does Goku sound like an angry old woman? Like wtf?😂😂😂
I think he sounds like a little kid. Women voice little boys in every language. Masako Nozawa was like 48-49 at the time of recording this.
@@jerr0. nah he literally sounds like an old woman not a kid. So is Adult Goku who somehow still sounds like the same old woman. And he is a warrior that sounds like an old woman and also for some reason sounds like Vegeta. Really weird. Like where's the distinction?🤣🤣
