    This is one of the best wildlife photography channels I have found. So relatable for any UK photographer. Useful info and slick! Great stuff Mike!

    Here is something I found useful when filming slomo at 120 fps on the GH5. I have programmed slomo on C3 (top dial.) I first put the setting to ordinary video and when the subject is in focus, I quickly turn the dial to slow motion (C3). I have found that this works best for me. This camera is capable of doing 180 fps but the quality suffers. Your videos are simply the best and I appreciate all the info you so willingly provide.

    Brilliant video Mike and so many things you said at the beginning about wildlife looking good in slow motion are so true. Had a play with slow motion myself in a few videos recently and the only downside I find is the amount of memory card it takes up. It really worth doing though. You have some stunning footage there. Cheers Keith

    Spectacular videos. What tips do you have for an animal that can be seen only for a few seconds or a minute and then it disappears into the woods? Like, a tiger coming out in the Indian forests that are very dense.

    Hi Mike,
    Isn't 120 fps normally an NTSC frame rate played back at 30fps which replays at 4 times slower, in PAL the equivalent would be 100fps played back at 25fps to achieve 4 times slower.
    Does working in NTSC cause you any issues when editing.
    Thanks for Lovely video.

    • @MikeLaneFRPS
      @MikeLaneFRPS  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It has not caused me any issues. I am new to video and there is much I do not understand. Frame rates still confuse me although I have watched many YT videos that explain it.

    Gorgeous clips! Thanks for showing. I also use a Panasonic G9 for filming, but I would recommend not using the "high speed video" option but "variable frame rate".

    Very nice clips in my opinion. Are the flying birds shot handheld or do you use some special tripod head?

      A normal video tripod head.

    A really good video, superb Crested Tit footage. I have the G9 and have captured a bit of footage of the deer rut, but I’ll have a go with the SLO-mo now. Do you tend to use a smaller aperture to give a bigger DoF for perched birds, so there’s less need to change focus? Thanks.

    • @MikeLaneFRPS
      @MikeLaneFRPS  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did at first, but sold so few it was not worth it. Much harder to upload video than stills pictures to agencies.

      @@MikeLaneFRPS Thanks. I've sold a few clips through Pond5. Wondering whether to sell my DSLRs and invest more in M43. Bit worried that Olympus seem to be selling up!?

    Another lovely and informative video with some super little clips. I go out with best intentions of shooting video but still get side tracked and lured into over concentrating on the stills. Mike, when you use the Olympus can you adjust the focus once you’re shooting? When I’ve tried it seems to grab focus with the AF prior to pressing the video shooting button but once I’m recording it seems to have the focus locked - or maybe I’ve just set it up incorrectly 😀 anyway once again excellent and enjoyable video.

    • @MikeLaneFRPS
      @MikeLaneFRPS  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi David, When shooting video I often go to manual focus and yes you can change focus as you shoot. If I am using AF then it is in continuous follow focus mode and will change focus while shooting video.

  • @NigelPullen
    @NigelPullen 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Mike. Loving all of your videos and hope you can answer this specific question which relates to this video. When you are shooting in slow motion you obviously cannot use the CAF focusing. How do you overcome the problem of something that is approaching you when shooting this way. I was shooting a fox today and quite often I had to stop the video and refocus and then start again. Is that the only option open to me or are there any tricks that you could teach me

    • @NigelPullen
      @NigelPullen 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Olympus OMD EM1 Mk111

    • @MikeLaneFRPS
      @MikeLaneFRPS  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In slow motion you have to manually focus as the fox moves towards you. I have peaking set to on so the sharp part of the image changes colour. That helps. I do not have magnify on as that confuses me. An external monitor would help as you get a bigger screen, but mine does not work in slow motion on the Olympus, but it does work on my Lumix G9.
      Manual focus is difficult on a small screen and I struggle with anything coming towards me.

  • @cdof5981
    @cdof5981 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You mentioned autofocus doesn't work on the Panasonic at 180fps. On the Olympus MX1 is manual focus also required when shooting at 120fps? What is the highest fps rate on the Olympus that maintains autofocus?

    • @SamuelRusu
      @SamuelRusu 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the 120fps from Olympus requires manual focus too! 60fps is the highest with autofocus.

    Mike, can I ask what picture profile you prefer. I am getting confused with my Panasonic S5 with v log or cine d as well as turning down sharpness and contrast in camera. Too much TH-cam! Regards Andy

    • @MikeLaneFRPS
      @MikeLaneFRPS  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I had to check. I have left it on Standard and not changed any parameters. I know nothing of Vlog and also watch a lot of TH-cam trying to understand video settings, but mostly I am lost.

    • @mondujar279
      @mondujar279 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MikeLaneFRPS I sympathise Mike. I am a stills photographer, videography seems to be full of BS in many ways. The cinematic look, 24 FPS, log footage. Like you I am wading through all of this, what I actually want is a sharp colourful quality image, without fuss. I will tell you if I ever achieve that!
