Stories of food shortages in the UK are greatly exaggerated; there were two turnips on the shelf of my local supermarket this morning, and I only wanted one.

However bad things seem in the UK to its residents, it is nowhere near the level of suffering and risk to life in other countries that results in refugees fleeing. The UK residents haven't a clue what it is like to be in that desperate situation, hence the almost complete absence of empathy.
