Ahem. I found this video while looking for choral performances of Ms Simon's anthem. While I acknowledge that this was not a perfect rendition, it is the one video that I have returned to hear over and over again. With a view count now over 35k, it is safe to say that I am not alone. My sincere congratulations to the soloist, choir and choir director. As a group they demonstrated more emotion than most of the other choirs (many who are much older). The essence of the piece is to communicate urgency and continuity with hope that cannot be denied. This choir accomplished this and more. For that reason a musical moment was made that people will always want to witness - if only in a recording. I urge those who can only point to the obvious to listen to the whole which is so many times greater than the parts - even when imperfect, This performance is a triumph. I join the audience in standing. Bravo !
I agree w/ some other posters ... too rushed. But I heard another choir do this exact same arrangement by Jay Althouse and it too, was too fast. Perhaps that's the speed written on the score. The opening bit and opening solo was the best part of the song!! tT was great.
@elzbieta52 If you've ever been in a choir then you know you can still feel plenty of emotions in singing a song "fast", especially with the changes in tempo it gives the song a little more character. But in any case, the conductor sets the pace and usually does what he\she feels at that moment unless specified by a piece of sheet music.
@Bobby Klein Yes, my son actually commented on this - and he is a fan! Thank you for posting this. Always amazing to hear young people express themselves with passion.
Great, great voice and rendition by the soloist, but I must say that I felt the overall arrangement suffered for being too rushed. Good work on the part of all the singers however!
