I never really did say in the video why I prefer to create burnishing with dye when possible, rather than polish. Effective burnishing or patina CAN be gone both ways, but when it is done only with polish, every time you scuff your burnished toe, you wind up with a light scratch that must be filled back in. When you apply dark polished to a lighter scratch, the surrounding area becomes even darker, and it can be a bit labor-intensive to maintain it when you wear the shoes a lot.
I agree completely, but when you do it with waxes and creams you can like with shoe laces change the overall appearance every now and then. Sure you can also strip dye but it's more laborious and it might not be too good for the leather in the long run if done constantly. Still great video and check that toe cap
What did you think about the quality of the shoes you keep hearing about bad quality shoes being sold. What was your take I saw a couple of things on the shoe. Maybe that’s why the shoes are on sale?
Saul, I believe the shoes were on sale because (the AE store manager said) they are discontinuing the calfskin oxblood color. I don’t believe any of those minor issues are the cause of the lowered price. If they were, then it would be considered a “factory second“ (you will see Allen Edmonds enthusiasts abbreviate that online as F2). I’m considering doing a completely separate video about “why I like Allen Edmonds shoes” because there is so much heated debate as far as whether they’re worth the money. My honest opinion, is at between $200 - $335, they’re a great buy to me, even with the flaws you saw here. I would Expect better quality if I were paying the full $195 or $425 list price, or if I were paying $695 for a shell Cordovan shoe. Before I spent $425 on AE, I would spend $500 on an Alden.
Sorry to be off topic but does anyone know a trick to get back into an instagram account?? I was dumb lost the account password. I would appreciate any help you can give me!
Great shoes. Each pair a unique piece of craftsmanship that will last a lifetime. So called “flaws” are items that nobody will ever even see and have no bearing on the functionality of the shoe. Wear them with pride my friend.
I have several pairs of shoes, all made by Tricker’s, that have piping (look up the ‘Woodstock’ model). This video made me pull out all three pairs for an inspection. Tricker’s are a shoe brand that uses high quality leather (for their uppers at least), but many of their models are notoriously rugged. You don’t expect the finishing to be perfect. However, not one of them has shoddy piping. The welt stitching is spot on. What I see here is unacceptable and should really be in the ‘seconds’ section. It isn’t nice when somebody points that out. It can be painful, especially when you have paid full retail (or close to it). I can only assume the Allen Edmonds workforce isn’t being trained properly, are employing incompetent people and don’t have the best quality control. I notice they have a website dedicated exclusively to factory seconds, which appears to be a business unto itself. I wouldn’t be shocked if we discover that a quarter of the shoes manufactured are going into the seconds section and another quarter are being sold as firsts when they should be in the former category. I do hope you enjoy your shoes. Knowing you, you will take steps to correct all those faults and show AE workforce how it should be done.
Is that lighter colored bulge line in the leather upper, around the medallion perforation, not a defect? It jumps out at 2:00 and 3:39. I have around 16 pairs of AE shoes acquired over the last 8 years (I used to live near a Shoebank in Wisconsin), and I've personally never encountered this type of irregularity in leather upper around the toe area until a recent Factory Second Jefferson 2.0 purchased earlier this year. I'll be keeping it because the Jefferson was discounted to $174, but I've never seen this prominent "light bulge line" in any of the previous AE shoes I've purchased, of which maybe 3 pairs are firsts and a dozen+ are factory seconds. Very intriguing to see what I consider to be a 'defect' appear on a 1st quality pair. Hope to get your perspective on whether this is a 'feature' and if I I am incorrect to regard it as a defect.
Another excellent video Bob! I have the same pair and it really fits good. However, I didn't see much difference with your mirror shine. Practice some more, I know it's not easy to achieve.
Another awesome video Robert! Those are beautiful shoes. I just received some gently used merlot McCallisters today and polished em up. God bless you and your family.
It is definitely darker and more purple lol but I like it more as well. In a sea of ox blood, it's nice to have something a little different. But you did an awesome job darkening the color of your shoes. I wish they came standard like that.
Hi Robert, as a new shoe collector, I could definitely use some shoe trees. Any suggestions on where to find them for a bit less money than the standard $20-$30/pair?
Louis Berry - thrift stores!!! From my experience it’s very hit or miss. The ones around here you can go in 5 or 6 or 7 times in a row, and they won’t have one pair. Then the next week they’ll have 6 pairs. I also get them from Amazon. I like these bc they are very robust. Go to Amazon: www.amazon.com/Ollieroo-Trees-Adjustable-Cedar-10-11/dp/B00WJIRLSU/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?keywords=oilleroo+shoe+treesa&qid=1562438248&s=gateway&sr=8-1-spell
I'm polishing my freshly recrafted shoes as I type. Just got 'em back today! I love a long wing and think you made the right choice not dyeing them. They came out perfect. The piano intro also added an extra touch of class! Cheers :)
Saddle soap will remove some of the natural oils in the leather despite there being moisturizing ingredients in it. Personally, I only soap my shoes when they’re really dirty or after getting them from being thrifted. If it’s some light dirt/dust you can just take a horsehair brush to it and then condition them without using saddle soap (I’ve even seen people get leather shoes caked in mud clean with just a brush). IMO saddle soap should mostly be used in certain circumstances (heavy dirt, salt, stains, etc.) and doesn’t need to be part of a normal shoe polishing routine.
Hugo Gomez - the Park Ave is on the 65 last, the MacNiel is on the 97 last: 1. The McNeil is going to have more room in the instep than the Park Avenue simply because it’s a Derby, vs the Park Avenue being in Oxford. Derbies have more adjustment at the eyestays. 2. There is more room in the 97 last around the outside of the toes. The toe shape is a little more bulbous, where as the 65 last is a little narrower. I don’t think there is more overall width, just more room around the toes ahead of the ball of the foot. So it’s a good last if you have a wide forefoot. Although tight, I can wear an 11.5 E in the 97 last, where as there’s no way I can wear an 11.5 E on the 65 last comfortably (although I have one old pair of AE Hastings that are 11.5e that fit the same as my newer Park Aves and Fifth Aves 11.5eee. I’ve heard a rumor that the older ALLAN Edmonds ran wide?). My ideal size is 11.5 eee both the 97 and 65 last though.
Good video ...thank you. I've purchased 3 pairs of Allen Edmonds since this past Father's Day ,2 on Father's Day and 1 just recently and all had some issue. I've got all of them on sale and noticed that there's something wrong with each of them which leads me to believe that's why those particular shoes were on sale. ... to get rid of them.I could of returned them but they were minor flaws and after all I don't want to pay full price. I do feel like they should state that there are issues with them instead of selling them as unblemished products.A little sly and not forth coming for a "respectable " company and quite honestly. ....not honest.
SickandTired Really - or maybe that’s the quality they’re normally putting out? I’m very hesitant to make any blanket statements about AEs overall quality. As someone running a TH-cam channel, I feel a responsibility to try and be fair and honest. That’s why I’ve taken the viewpoint of sharing MY experience and leaving it at that. I see a lot of people saying that AEs recent shoes are not as good quality of those in the past, but I still wonder, is that representative of all of the shoes they’re producing? I mean am I ONLY hearing about the complaints, while the people buying the shoes with no flaws don’t chime in? I just can’t be certain.
$300 is a great price!! They are very beautiful shoe. Are they as comfortable as they look? I'm planning on a pair of custom-made shoes for diabetic feet I need a little larger for inserts but I enjoy the great leather that this company can offer.
Wow...I love AE's and own four pairs. Seems like all the points you pointed out shows how quality went down...starting with the skilled craftsman performing the stich without using a channel as a guide with a denser thread count to a sloppy stich with a lesser thread count. Maybe $200 dollars is the right price point not the retail $400. They leave out the arch support with some BS about seeing the stitching....come on..look how old yours are and you dont even know its there from the outside. I'm still keeping the faith in AE tho. Thanks for the vids.
Yeah, valid points, but that change (cutting the groove) was made prob in the 1990’s, not recently. Also, these new MacNeils, now that I’ve worn them for a few full days, are among the MOST comfortable and supportive shoes in my collection. They’re more comfortable than the black MacNeils, although the black ones are a tad too narrow at 11.5E, so that’s not a 100% fair comparison. As I write this, it’s 11:30am, and today alone I’ve walked 1.7 miles (3,570 steps) in them.
Bob, you do like your AE! Please check the video and note I think a creasing on the toe cap of the right shoe. I would also suggest making them pop by burnishing just the brogue on the wing tip and just the medallion on the toe cap with a darker brown. Thanks for sharing, I always enjoy your videos
