Thanks so much for this video, Mr. Gene. This 73 year-old really enjoyed it, as Bluegill fishing is my favorite kind of fishing! Here's a short story for you on how my Mom turned me on to Bluegill/Bream fishing over 65 years ago. When I was 8 years old, my Mom introduced me to fishing. We went to the little pond across Austin Drive from where we lived in Gaffney, SC. We dug up some worms from under a big tree near the pond, and Mom cut down a couple of cane poles. She showed me how to attach the line and roll it around the cane pole; how to put an old cork on the line to use as a float, pinch a little BB sized sinker to the line, and tie on a little hook (the hook, line, and sinker were all bought at the local hardware store as this was before the days of the "big box stores"). Then she showed me how to attach the worm onto the hook, and how to softly and smoothly swing the line out to the water, so as not to scare the fish. Later, being the farm girl that she was, she showed me how to clean the catch. That day, she introduced me to a past time that I still enjoy today at the age of 73. She gave me a lifetime of precious memories, this is just one of them!
Same here. I am retired now but when I was a child my grandparents had a very smell "hog pond" as they called it. Green sunfish and bullhead catfish only. They wouldn't let anyone eat the fish because the hogs kept it muddy all the time. When I finally graduated high school, I built a 2 acre pond and have enjoyed catching and eating fish ever since.
I'll be 35 this year and I've spent my whole life fishing. Growing up we'd pond hop all across Oklahoma. Back in the 90s and 2000s, most farmers didn't care if you jumped the fence and fished as long as you were respectful, and most of the ones that did care had posted signs. I wish I had ponds to take my boys to like the ones I fished as a kid. By the time I was 10 I had already caught several bass over 6lbs. We had one pond that we could consistently catch 1lb bluegill and redear perch. Another that was loaded with huge channel cat and right next to it was a pond that was spring fed that produced more slab crappie than you could catch. I miss those ponds so bad lol. I wish I lived near fisheries as good as the ones he fishes. I've spent so much time fishing, and my dad and grandpa were so freaking good at fishing, but I still learn new things all the time from watching Richard Gene he is the GOAT!!
When the bluegills get on the beds, it is the most wonderful time of the year for us ultralight anglers!!! Anyone who says they don't like this kind of fishing has got something seriously wrong with them!!! God bless you and your family!!!
I. Really enjoy watching your videos,as they are only about catching fish and what to use and when to use it. The other people with fishing video as a whole are trying to sell you something . Keep up the good work. GOD BLESS You.
Great video! I have caught panfish since the early 60's, and the most productive and fun method I found is using a fly rod with a light tapered leader, and a latex floating spider with rubber band legs. Just lay it out there a few feet from shore and let it sit. You can see the fish swim up slow and suck it in!
Great to see you catch AND release them ! So often people loose perspective on the breeding stock and the big ones have to be released for the future success !
Richard, I have fished for crappie on a fly rod, used a regular old fly, and it was so much fun. I am sure a lot of people do this, but your the first I have seen on YT do this. LOVE IT! Instant sub.
Mr. Gene I absolutely love your videos and your attitude about life. You are an inspiration and one heck of a fine angler. Learn something everytime I click your video. God bless you and the machine family 🙏
Learn something on every video! You are so experienced in this sport of fishing. I am so glad that you are using your experience to teach others what you know. Helping keep this sport alive!😊
I wish I could send you a picture of the massive Black Crappie I caught this morning in Harrisburg, Arkansas (06/14). I've been watching your videos and learning so much about how to catch Crappie. So I.followed your instructions and used a loop knot to attach my jig. Found out the correct depth and "BAM"! It was a beautiful thing!! Thank you! Know I thought of you when I reeled him in!!
Hi Mr. Richard. Fishing from the bank is the access I have, and Bluegill and their cousins are what I target. Thank you for continuing to share your techniques and secrets. For whatever reason that Nikko Stonefly lure is not available in my area, but I will try to find something similar and try it. Thank you again for another great video. God bless you and your family.
"I missed one." Too many shows just edit the missed ones out. Thank you Richard for letting us know we aren't the only ones that miss 'em sometimes. You the man! Whoo! Keep on! Blessings to you and Momma Sue! Thanks for bringing us along.
I love your videos been watching since 2017. You have made me a better bass fisherman. I need more videos with artificial bait for bass.❤your tips work!!!
Thanks, Richard. You are correct about Bluegill being a strong fighter. Putting the grandkids on some Bluegills is God's reward for having children. They don't even know why they catch em, they just want to catch some more. Plant the seed and let it grow. God bless y'all for all that you do for us. Be careful out there around the water.
When I go fishin, I don't target just any kinda fish. And I don't use just any kinda bait either, but watching you, I may need to rethink. Believe it or not, I like using biscuit dough from a can or worms, but panfish magnets got me to thinkin. I'm not one to keeping that fish, just catch and release. I liked the part bout bending the hook up a tad, never thought bout that either. Scent is another thing I never thought bout using.. Thanks for teaching this ol dogs new tricks
Hi Richard. I've been following you since forever. Thanks for all of the great fishing videos you have posted. Just a while back you had a fishing trip targeting a specific type of fish but you caught a number of big GAR just by accident. I would love to see you do a video dedicated to specifically catching Huge GAR please. Also, I would like to start making some fishing videos of my own. What make of GoPro do you use? The sound and picture quality is always excellent. Thank you so much and keep going fishing when you can!!!
Great vid, fished today for first time in a couple years and it was almost a spiritual experience…. Reminded me of the quote “some go to church and think about fishing, others go fishing and think about God”
If you don’t have a dedicated rod, just use a swivel to your main line with 4lb leader to a fly. Attach a clear bubble bobber or foam bobber to act as casting weight. Otherwise it’s too light to cast a fly on its own. I do that when I need Bluegill for bait. They hammer flies off a bobber.
My brother, I love fishing for bluegill and you couldn’t have explained it better. I’m going to get myself. One of them 9 foot poles super sensitive. I’m one fancy fly ride reels. My friend, I was going to get me some of them bait. Go on the Internet. It’s about time here in Illinois. And the way you finished it God bless God bless you, brother. And all fisherman around the world amen.🙏 and take them grandkids, fishing, girls and boys. You’d be the best. Papa in the world out there and get it done.🙏🙏🤠🤩
thanks for this! Nikko seems to be out of stock of these. hopefully they are still making them. I will see if I can find another company who makes them
This is a life cleanse from all the garbage going on in the world! Thanks Richard!

Richard your are the very best! 🎣🫡 🐐
Great bluegills video content. Question: What is the make/model/color/size of the jigs that you use with the Nikko stone fly bait?
You’re basically fly fishing with a mono rig. It’d be fun to see you in a trout stream with this same setup.
Awesome video Richard 🎣🎣🎣🎣 wooooooooooo
Heck yeah man! Love the videos
HOW CAN YOU SEE SO GOOOOOD????
I love how he talks to the fish when they're misbehaving, "Now you stop that!"
