Other names for them are Giant Mackerel, King Mackerel, Narrow-banded Spanish Mackerel, Spaniard, Banded Tuna, Leaping Tuna, Tenggiri and Batang. They may not have wanted to share the name of the fish in Malay as Batang can also mean = the male anatomy.

When I traveled to Phuket, I met a few young Muslim then I asked them about halal food there, it was in bus terminal, but non of them can speak Malay, it made me sad. Alhamdulillah in Pattani they still speak Malay
Thai Muslims in Phuket might not be Thai Malay. There are Muslims in Thailand who are not Malay. The Muslims in Pattani are ethnic Malays and they all speak Malay. It's similar to the Sumatra accent. There are students from Pattani studying in Medan and Padang.
