Thanks for the best said reminder I heard today. Wherever we're all going, at our own paces, being able to live here and learn here is astonishing....every single moment.
Thank you for your excellent podcast. I recently “found you” and am listening to each one (some multiple times) in an effort to absorb the concepts you and your guests cover. I am not a scientist or an engineer or an economist. I am deeply grateful that you have taken the time to explain our predicament in a way that is accessible to me. My goal is to be conversant enough to be able to explain them to others: my loved ones and neighbors. Thank you so much for teaching me so I can help others to understand. At some point, they’ll listen. We’re going to need each other desperately.
Facing collapse can be a lonely path. Thank you Nate for offering us an honest, thoughtful place to gather with so many beacons of insight. It’s affirming and rare. I think this is how compassion moves…
Nate, you are a wonderful human being, thank you so much for what you do. We are all grateful to have the privilege of listening to your podcasts and watching your videos which are extremely valuable.
Nate, I am so grateful for you and the work that you’re doing. I practice this nightly thing called “Three G’s”… basically, my partner and I talk about what we are grateful for and what was good about our day. We recognize every single day that we live better than any king or queen could have ever hoped for. What a time to be alive.
Gahhh!! I wish I could go Amish and have a cold storage like they do: just a mountain of ice blocks in a well insulated shed. But I don't have a car - I ride a bicycle - re-used parts, never a new one. My most recent foray into reducing my footprint has been to try not to use AC. I've reverted to just using the fan, and am currently trying putting jugs of frozen water in the air intake. Reused water bottles with frozen water strapped to s single fan in the bedroom. I'll let you know how the nighttime cooling does after our warm days in Florida. Technically it should be cooler in December, but just getting there is excruciating. I've graduated away from using the stove. My cooking is done in a little ricemaker, and short bursts in the microwave. When I get around to it, I'll be turning off my water heater. There's no reason to have it running constantly when I'm not using a lot of hot water. And that's my current contribution. I hope to get even more stingy with my energy use as I learn how to tolerate less waste! Oh, and I have foregone children. So has my brother. I know, what's that really going to do? Well every little bit helps.
As many have expressed: I am grateful for YOU and your humility, Prof. Hagens, in the face of....well...all we face. In what are surely the "end times," I quote the controversial conservation biologist, Dr. Guy McPherson: "At the edge of extinction, only love remains." And, yes. Happy Thanksgiving. Happy to be in this fight with you.
Well done, Nate. It was great hearing about and seeing your homage to cheap energy. I suppose we Americans should also be grateful for the 1974 National Security Study Memorandum 200 which broadly outlines our policy of extracting global resources as cheaply as possible while depriving the vast populations from enjoying them. C’est la vie(until it isn’t).
Hey Nate, just want to say I appreciate your view point and your sincere attitude of Gratitude. I have had to assess my own usage of energy and make some adjustments in how I use energy. This is the Greatest time to be Alive and also the Greatest Time to experience change. Love you Brother. Cheers, Jim
I don't know who made "Thanks Giving" a day to Celebrate... But it seems to be so much more special this year, even though we do not have that moment in my own history to celebrate. I think this time, it is reciprocated across the world. Congratulations and thank you 💛 which then brings me to something I do however wonder about... Do you think the 5th tier 🤔 inscribes things into stone for the times it was needed?
So, being grateful for the energy we consume at a colossal and increasing rate largely from deposits laid down 65 million years ago is kind of a paradox in that it may lead to our demise. Like Thanksgiving being a celebration of the harvest and well-being when historically it was all about bounty and protection secured by pilgrims and puritan god botherers colonizing the East coast of America namely Pennsylvania and the setting up of Tobacco Plantations, and we all know what that led to. The date changes over the years mark various agendas but I am happy with it despite the ambiguities, as a date to consider our extravagant survival and to be conscious of those less fortunate. Have a good one Nate and much love from here in NZ to you, your friends, and family and those who may need our assistance.
Happy Thanksgiving. Thankful for your channel. I didn't know you lived on a farm, I would be interested to hear more one what you are doing on your farm to further the Great Simplification. If you aren't already, grow some Black Locust for your firewood ... easy to start from seed, super fast grower, good for bees, excellent firewood and fence posts.
In the 1970's,80's and 90''s I didn't NEED a smartphone, the internet or a car. I utilized a car from the ages of 16-18, and then went for 14 years without a personal vehicle, though I did become proficient with heavy equipment and was in demand. I'm saddened to see how much we've demoted our impact.
We alive today are lucky with the timing for sure. Even in the energy descent anyone alive will be fortunate to have lived during the dramatic changes that will occur. Only the most resourceful will be alive when the carbon pulse is finished, should they have been (un)lucky, or tough enough to make it that far. Definitely won't be any of the wealthy people installing bunkers...This will be a generational experience, at least I'm hopeful.
Nate, according to the site The World Counts the mining industry accounts for a whopping 80% of all electricity consumption. I find this number insanely high. Do you think this is true?
@@barbarae. I think you're missing one big point. Sustainable means DEGROWTH nowadays so forget everything about solar energy and moreover electric cars. I was only making a commentary about how we're all schizophrenic about what we think and how we should live. I am perhaps not as kind as you , I just want people to see some reality , gain some perspective and perhaps feel a little more ill at ease (in some cases)
Nate, you're a beautiful individual!

I'm endlessly enthralled learning about the astronomical amounts of energy so many of us use. It's just mind blowing.
