That would be easy. Some kind of over saturated overdrive pedal would get you there. I think with a mandolin, you probably don't need too much high gain distortion, or it might feedback and squeal too much. Might have to back off the treble or highs too so it's not so piercing and draining. A delay or reverb pedal to give it a little bit of ambiance and space would be great too! And if it's just too noisy no matter what you do, definitely get a noise gate.

its good but a i think with a "rat" and an equalizer behind them, you can make colder and heavyer. Eq 100:+9/200:-8/400:0/800+8/1,6:+3/3,2+5/6,4+1
An eq before/after the preamp or distortion can make a world of a difference!
