I made this Pie 4 times now. This last time I had some heavy cream to get rid of so I used about 2 cups of cream and 1/2 cup milk, I added an extra egg because they were small eggs from a farm and about 1 teaspoon of Corn Starch. It was the best ever it was so smooth and creamy tasted like a Chef made it. I have also put Coconut in it for a Coconut Custard Pie I love coconut I also have used Coconut milk and half regular Milk. They have all been great Love this recipe
@@organicinohio5398 hum did you scald the Milk? First time I used Milk and it was not as good. It was not runny but light. Cream and the Cornstarch made it thick and creamy. I think I have always used half and half and milk or Coconut Milk and half and half. First time I used all milk and it was ok but not as good,
What I did was use 5 eggs, nearly a cup of sugar, and 1.5 tsp of vanilla extract and 1/2 tsp of salt to emulsify the eggs. Also I used 2 cups heavy cream and 1/2 cup whole milk. the milk I let it boil til there was a skin on top so I gave a quick stir and it steamed (I wasn’t watching it very closely mostly by accident lol). But it coated the back of a spoon quite well so I took it out and added it to egg mix that had been sitting in the refrigerator pre mixed for like 30 minutes by then. Once I added the milk I added nutmeg and I then put it in my pie crust and baked at 400 until it rose all around and I turned it like after 10-15 minutes and had to take the oven temp down to 350 for the remaining time. I also wrapped the edge of the pie with tin foil. Killer recipe actually!
I made this pie tonight and it was incredible!! I used Lactaid 2% milk + 1/2 c. half and half cream. I was out of vanilla so I substituted it with Pure Almond Extract. I had no nutmeg so I sprinkled it with cinnamon. It was incredible, my husband asked for a second piece. This is a keeper!!
Your bloopers at the end tells me your an authentic person - way to be vulnerable. My favorite pie is custard pie. For the holidays this is a favorite in Hawaii where I live but when visiting the mainland - finding these pies are impossilbe - so I''m going to make one my self. Thanks Amy! I hope these comments brings you success on your channel
Add a tsp. of nutmeg to the mix, and sprinkle some more on top. Also reduce heat to 350f. The lower heat avoids an overcooked top, and too-browned crust edge. I learned that, and most of my other cooking skills from my Dear Granny. My wife is very happy and appreciative of the things I learned.
Robina Anstey I put the nutmeg on, my Brother commented. " taste just like Maw (Grandma ) use to make" ! Robina Anstey, thank you so much Sis! Happy Easter from Canada too. Big internet Hugs!
Thank you my dear friend. This recipe has been passed down through my family. It's one of our favorite pie recipes. Hope you will like it! Hugs and blessings to you and yours!
I use this recipe once a month and LOVE IT! BTW I only use 2 1/4 cups of milk since 2 1/2 cups is too much, with spillage. Also, I often substitute the milk with whipping cream ...what heavenly decadence! Thank you for this video since it is clear and easy to follow. All the best.
Amy, I noticed that one of the first commenters said "my grandmother". Well,,, the ONLY custard pie I remember was made by my grandmother! And that was 40+ years ago. I'm going to make this JUST for YOU and HER! :) And to bring back fond memories,,,,,,,, Thanks so much for sharing this with us!
My family always made custard pie around holidays. My mother always made but been watching her since I could walk. Her passing away four years ago unexpectedly and never could remember how exactly to make it entirely but was close to how Amy made it. Thank tou Amy and this Thanksgiving making for the Family and he tradition movies on. My mother sifted powder sugar on top but not much.
GREAT tips regarding the foil and *especially* regarding how to avoid spilling filling on the way to the oven. Wish I had seen this before making a bit of a mess with a bit of a spill while putting a buttermilk pie into the oven today.
Happy Belated Birthday! I pray you had an awesome day! Thanks so much for stopping by! I hope you can try this pie... it's so good! Hugs and blessings...
Hi Amy! I am happy to have found your recipe. I have been trying out different recipe variation of this egg custard pie and all has been good but I haven’t yet found the one I’m looking for. Reading some of the comments in here also gave me new ideas that I could use in the future. Thanks and Stay safe!
I just tried your recipe ... and didn't suprise me it came out awesome... I'm always trying things from youtube... But I did try your recipe and it came out awesome... thank you Amy great job ...
Excellent video. I love how you clearly gave the instructions and the tip about filling it in the oven. I'm goingbto make it I'd been looking for this recipe.
Awesome I made it yummy. I did something a little different because I husband said egg custards taste too "eggy" so I added a pack of vanilla instant pudding in place of the vanilla flavoring. Yummy no complaints :-)
I can't begin to tell you how many pies I've spilled trying to get them into the oven, lol! Using a pourable container really helps. :-) Thank you for your sweet comment dear Lynn. Always love hearing from you! Have a blessed week! Love ya...
Hello Amy Lynn you are the only one on TH-cam I saw that knows how to make a old fashioned custard or egg custard pie.. everyone didn't scald milk and did not temper its..lol I added nutmeg...I want my in a ramekin not pie but you're the best. HAPPY HOLIDAYS 5STARS
Hi Ana! Thank you so very much for writing in and for the kind words. I truly appreciate it! I'm so happy you enjoyed this recipe! I wish I had remembered to mention adding nutmeg in this video. Some of my family members do not like nutmeg, so I always have to leave it out when I make this pie :-( Thank you again for watching and commenting! Happy, happy holidays to you and yours!
Thank you so much. My mother used to make a really good one that didn't have a funky, eggy taste. I think your recipe may be very close to hers. I may add coconut like she did and make it into a coconut-custard pie. Have a Happy Holiday Season. UPDATE- I did make the pie according to this recipe with the addition of one tsp of corn starch, and it was gone VERY quickly! It was delicious- rather like eating a cloud; my husband and I loved it. I'm certain he's going to ask for it again.
Looks like how mine used to turn out, you can test if pie filling or pies doness with a room temperature butter knife stick in pie it will come out clean that's a new learn for some of yours out there. I would say this is a all right recipe.
Pie came out nice and high but had a eggy flavor. Maybe egg yolks should be used? 2eggs and 2 eggs yolks? Also, baking at 400F is too high. Use 350F for 50 minutes. At 400F within 15 minutes the pie was getting too brown on top. The pie has the right amount of sweetness. I used 1.5 tsp of vanilla extract. If you want a more rich flavor you can substitute some of the milk with half&half. Thank You for this recipe!
I use 1/2 and1/2 also, which take the pie to another level, mother always used can milk which was also Good. its been about 2 years since I've made one, think I'll bake one for Christmas along with all the other wonderful desserts I'm planning to make. Thanks for the tip.
Love the way you keep it simple and glad you didn't cut out your laughing; you made me laugh too & you know that makes for a joyful day. Anyway, I'll be trying the recipe soon because you've made it look so simple… and what a fantastic tip to stop spills!

You can always cook the custard in a saucepan untill really thick before pouring into half cooked pie crust that way you know the custard will set the way you want it
Thanks so much dear Patricia. This pie is really easy to make and is great when you have guests over. Hope you can give it a try. Have a most beautiful week my dear friend. Love ya...
Just made it without the crust. I LOVE it!!! Egg custard has always been my favorite pie. When I was diagnosed with Celiac I haven't been able to find a decent pie crust. This recipe doesn't really need the pastry. Thanks so much!! Love your personality....
Hi Izzy! Thank you so much for writing in and for the very kind words! I'm so happy you enjoyed this recipe. I have not made this custard pie for quite some time (it's my Mom's recipe)... but I'm craving it now, lol. We are snowed in today, so I just might make it! Yummy! I pray you and yours had a very Merry Christmas... wishing all of you a blessed New Year! Thank you again for stopping by!
I don't know if scalding the milk really improves the flavor but it does accelerate the baking process and helps the filling set. I baked it for the full 50 minutes and that was way too much--the pie came out dense and eggy rather than creamy and pudding like. So I made it again, and this time pulled it out of the oven after 32, 33 minutes, and it was much better. I also reduced the sugar to just a quarter cup. I think it's also important to let the pie cool on a wire rack, like Amy says. If you don't want to scald the milk, I would try 15 minutes at 425 then 30 minutes or so at 350.
+Patricia Derrickson Thank you so much Patricia for watching and writing in! I hope you will enjoy this recipe. It's a family favorite here! Happy New Year!!!
+Patricia Derrickson Awww, thank you Patricia for subscribing and for your very kind words! I appreciate it more than I can say! We have a lot of fun filming these videos :-) God Bless you and yours...
