I just loved this presentation. So profound and inspiring. I especially love the thoughts on our judgement at the end. When confronted by God in judgement we each get to see the real you that God had in mind from our conception to the you that presents to God upon judgement with all it's flaws and missteps in life but also with whatever we present in our being which is of love's kind. The pain our our "missing the mark" will be intense but we have a merciful God upon whom we cast ourselves.
So inspiring! Brilliant explanation, just this side of David Bentley Hart.

Fascinating discussion on Bulgakov. I am leaving this comment here because this is what I perceive as Bulgakov's significant contribution to Christianity.
You know, Christianity inherently orthodox with its dogma and traditions. In the modern sense, we call them rules. These are the rules Christians try to uphold. The issue in the modern sense, is that when you are born into a world of rules, you dont quite fully understand the depth of said rules. In essence, you need some underlying wisdom behind the rules.
The issue plaguing Christianity in the modern and postmodern era is the rules have been eroded and disrespected. This isnt some kind of "weak Christian individual" rule breakers either. The point is that the faith hasnt had a deeper discussion about it. In most instances, it has been inherently reserved for theologians and literary authors that try to convey said "wisdom".
For example, in this video there was a big discussion on hell and if it is eternal. Absolutely, a very very deep question that to an unwise Christian speaking to a laymen wouldnt be able to amply articulate to a layman. The truth is, as Christians, we often ignore the wisdom associated with navigating these questions.
This has massive implications with the world we are building too. It's as if we Christians are trapped in this highly structuralized rule book which, while near and dear to our heart, is so distilled and ideal that there isnt an opening to gather to intuition to why said rules are important.
To take a simple example, consider littering. Yeah, it's a 200$ fine in some areas. Dont litter. It's a rule. You know how many people litter? What if they saw the impact of littering? It's like that. So yeah, we need to slap the 200$ fine and follow it, but we also need to know why it is done.
Christianity has a bunch of these things and the WHY is never explained because there isnt an emphasis on this kind of wisdom as much as there should be.
So right, about that hell issue. There was an expression that Dostoevsky used to describe this exact issue. The argument we here all the time is that we will burn in hell for eternity. It's the absolute worse thing. We are sitting in the pits of hell burning an eternal flames with all the fallen angels. And lo behold, the ceiling of hell breaks open and there appears to be a single onion with god's hand holding it from its green shoot. Look at God, giving everyone in hell a second chance to be with him. He is giving us a ticket out of here and all we have to do is hang on....
... But guess what, its an onion. And those people in hell grab onto it, getting ready for salvation, only to have their minds eventually disrespect God's mercy by kicking other's off the onion because of their perception that the onion was fragile and meant for only one of them. Rather than having their hearts with God in them, they start kicking and clawing for themselves...
The onion stalk snaps. God and all his magnificence gave everyone in hell a second chance, and they all ignored him. Those people in hell looked at God as weak for giving them an onion when in reality they should have been grateful. I guess next time the people in hell need a gold escalator, to make them feel less secure, right?
Nope. Therefore, it's understood that people who are burning in hell are usually there for a reason. Could they leave? Sure. Why not. We can put an asterick there. But knowing this kind of wisdom, it's better just to say burn in hell.
It's like Adam and Eve where Adam went to hide after he ate the apple-- naked and afraid. God in his HEART was so nice to even give Adam a fair trial. Heck, God probably would have kept Adam and Eve in paradise if he confessed his wrongdoing in all his heart and embraced God even more afterwards.
But no, Adam didnt.
Anyway, this kind of thinking is sooo essential to having a deeper spiritual connection with God. Obviously it's dangerous though because some people do this kind of stuff without ever wanting to get closer to God and the rules Christians try to uphold.
Some of the things Bulgakov says about Mary are incredibly alarming, at first glance they seem incredibly blasphemous.
What else is church history other than some kind of truth coming to fruition finally & at the same time the revelation of the bad, evil & ugly within the community of believers? And according to Rom 5:20 the good will prevail, because grace always overturns sin, νόμος δὲ παρεισῆλθεν, ἵνα πλεονάσῃ τὸ παράπτωμα· οὗ δὲ ἐπλεόνασεν ἡ ἁμαρτία, ὑπερεπερίσσευσεν ἡ χάρις·
Sergei Bulgakov (not to confuse with Michail Bulgakov, who wrote the famous book "The Master and Margarita") turned from MARXISM to IDEALISM & reflected on SOPHIA, an attribute of God mentioned in Proverbs 8. This is interesting for me to know since I experience as a German Lutheran pastor very often the other way around - the turning from IDEALISM TO MARXISM resp. turning to LEFT GREEN THINKING among many theologians!
But no matter what! In Christ truth is about to forge ahead! Thank you for this show being a reference to Bulgakov reminding me of SOPHIA THEOU 1 Cor 1:30, in which Paul found a picture of Christ, ἐξ αὐτοῦ δὲ ὑμεῖς ἐστε ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ, ὃς ἐγενήθη σοφία ἡμῖν ἀπὸ Θεοῦ, δικαιοσύνη τε καὶ ἁγιασμὸς καὶ ἀπολύτρωσις. And this is for me comfort enough living in a crazy world nevertheless filled with interesting folks like Sergei Bulkakov and - you might have guessed it - Michail Bulkakow too with his fantastic book "The Master and Margarita"! Hello Dear Pastor! I wonder if you could help me understand something. I grew up Catholic in the 50s and 60s, before Vatican II, so I probably remember a much different church than it is today. Although my older sister went on to become a nun and mother superior, I left the church at 17 due to a severe spiritual trauma, and later began attending various different Protestant denominations. My stepmother (who didn't raise me) had grown up Lutheran, but she was very worldly, and left as soon as she was old enough to make her own decisions. I can remember her saying things like they didn't allow dancing or attending movies, and she liked doing both.
My question as someone who has been of the "more reformed" Protestant mindset for such a long time is, where and what is the basis for priests and mass during the New Covenant era? My understanding has been that those things were done away with, that we are all kings and priests now, and that Jesus Christ is our High Priest and we need no other advocate between ourselves and the Heavenly Father.
I definitely have a problem with the "more reformed" protestants in their view of ECT, but what do you understand is their reasoning for being pastors (Eph 4:11) instead of priests?

@Dorina Mary , greetings & love before from Germany! Do you know why Catholics love their priesthood? Could it be that priests consider themselves being closer to God than the rest? Did Christ teach such thinking? Did he not think differently? Does Phil 2 from verse 5 on not tell of Christ refusing to get considered special but as viewed as bloody human?
What does that tell you on the necessity of having PRIESTS in the church? See, that ist the reason protestants have no priests, but according to Eph 4:11 just ordinary humans in different positions without having a special ontological status, that means simply: they are not closer to God! Having a priesthood means generally division of believers. I´m aware that many people like that. And consider this as normal. The general protestant tradition has a different approach. It denies special ontological statuses being actually present with a priesthood. Protestant pastors are no priests. Pastors are not more than being the first under many for practical reasons of order.
You obviously recognize the priesthood of Christ as only necessary mediator between humans & God. You are exactly right, dear Dorina Mary! This is the necessary basis for human salvation! You surely do also recognize those foolish ideas most Christians are infected with, are you not? Foolish ideas on priesthood & Christ & God in general! What if I told you that this seems pretty normal? Because it is deeply human to love to speculate on things appearing unclear & suspicious! God loves humans that He became Himself human in Christ! What about simply tolerate them instead of accusing them of heresy?
Does not the love chapter of Paul, 1 Cor 13, in verse 7 show what love does? Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things! Exactly this told Christ his followers - By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another, John 13;35!

Maybe not in the sense that he is bent on wiping out the population of Ukraine, but undoubtedly he is trying to eradicate their identity. His project is a continuation of a recurring Russian desire to impose a Russian identity on what is regards as illusory or mistaken notions of independence. Tragically the mission of cultural genocide is being delivered through an unjust and brutal war being directed at civilian populations. I speak as a convert to Russian Orthodoxy and someone with a deep love and respect for Russian culture and Russian spirituality, but at this moment, neither Putin nor, alas our Patriarch embody or express that spiritual tradition or the depths of unconditional compassion that is the treasure of Orthodoxy.

@@jonegan6807 Thanks for taking the time to respond to my comment. Personally, I try to look for parallels and the 'story behind the story'. It seems no one is taking into account the countless aggressive advances of NATO into former Soviet regions, even though an agreement exists between NATO and Russia that NATO would not do this.
No one is taking into account the involvement of NATO (and the USA) in the 2013-2014 coup d'etat which overthrew the elected government in order to establish a government friendly to western oligarchs.
The closest parallel I can think of is the proclamation of secession in the south that prompted the Civil War in the USA. The North replied with "Oh no you don't!" Or, this could be compared by imagining that China was funneling money, training and military personnel to communist radicals in Texas and was able to help Texas break away from the United States. Then China establishes a "Kim Jong-un" as leader in Texas. I think it's reasonable to expect the USA to again say, "Oh no you don't!"
Yes, war sucks. But before we go on and on about how horrible this war is on the civilians (which is really a 'bleeding heart' appeal to use emotions rather than reason in our judgment of this war), let us ask ourselves why we said nothing when Ukraine's elected government was overthrown. Let us also ask ourselves why we went along with the Ecumenical Patriarch's involvement in instituting a schism in Ukraine. The EP is, by all appearances, nothing but a CIA tool.

@@choppy1356 Yes, your take is very close to my own re: the Ukraine situation. This "war" is nothing other than the U.S. conducting a proxy war against Russia. Putin's response has been measured and NOT aimed at genocide but aimed, rather, at preserving as much of Ukraine as he can. He views Ukrainians as "cousins" of some kind. But, NATO and the U.S. is trying to make that preservation of Ukraine impossible. It's pretty obvious who are the "genocidists" here. The U.S. military machine cares not one whit how many Ukrainians are dying. It doesn't even care if Ukraine disappears completely off the face of the earth. They want what's under the ground in Ukraine, the earth minerals. Just as Israel wants what's under the ground in Gaza, newly-discovered massive oil and gas deposits. As always, the "surface" official narratives are total BS.
It's the NATO/US military machine that is conducting genocide in Ukraine. For the earth minerals it "needs" to keep conducting war all over the planet. So far, Putin has been very measured, and defensive, in his response. One prays he can keep being measured. This guy should keep focused on Bulgakov and not politics.
