    Thanks for all of the support on this video! To everyone suggesting to "Simply buy new lights," these are around $750 PER SIDE bit.ly/30I5wwg
    I'll stick to the $20 polish for now! ;)
    To those suggesting to replace the lenses, unfortunately these are not designed to be taken apart (shame on BMW). Because of that, it would be a tremendous amount of work to disassemble them, and there are no official OEM or Genuine replacement lenses.
    For $20 and about an hour of my time, I'm satisfied with the results I got, even If I have to redo them in a year.

    • @keny46
      @keny46 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've done several people's cars headlights including my own and a few things I've learned are that they turn out way better if they're already bad aka the original coating on the lenses is worn off if it's not and the lights are only bad at the top its a pain in the ass to make them look like new.
      As long as you reapply the coating that protects the lenses you shouldn't have to worry about resanding them, just don't forget.

      Look for just the lenses, I think I paid $80 for each lens and they lasted about 4 years until I sold the car and got top dollar for the trade. bmw 3

    • @justinbuice
      @justinbuice  4 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      Very true! I can't afford a new car, so I might as well take care of what I have :)

    • @edgy1rocks
      @edgy1rocks 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Even if you could afford a new car, the depreciation of the vehicle once you drive it off the dealer's lot would make that a poor decision. I didn't have a garage when I bought my first BMW - (a 1982 320i, purchased new) and now, nearly 30 years later, I prefer letting someone else take the first big hit of depreciation. Properly serviced and cared for, these are very desirable rides! It really helps to have a garage though! Nice progress on yours! I'm still thinking about the kerosene heater...

    I'm not sure you got all the discoloration of that light where it was the worst...
    Also, you will always be faster and more efficient wet sanding anything, if you will get the hose and tape the metal end of it, so it does not scratch anything, and set it to drip a little water from the top of the lens the whole time you are sanding it. It will go way faster, and the results will be better.. I always use the highest grit wet or dry paper to finish the lens, like up to 4000 or higher grit and the lens is way easier to compound out what little sanding defects are still there..

    Alright so I just did this and a heads up:
    * I spent about an hour or so on each headlight, by the end of the first headlight, the provided sandpaper was worn out and I couldn't get all of the fog out of the second headlight.
    * I recommend you buy an additional 1k and 3k sand paper so you can actually get it 100%.
    * For the frog tape, green doesn't have as much adhesive but doesn't leave any residue. Blue leaves the most. I recommend yellow frogtape if you can get it.
    * I had to buy an additional spray bottle, glass cleaner, microfibre towel, and a water jug. That was an additional $30 so the total was ~$55.

    Cool video! Now I’ve got to do this for my 2006 325i headlights! I’ve used the Plastx before with just a foam pad and it works temporarily for mild cases but I might just have to try out the more detailed method soon to get them looking brand new.

    Reminds me of my old e90. Bought it with a broken camshaft, replaced it and put 15k miles on it before selling it. I sanded and reclearcoated the headlights, made the car look great

    • @frandanco6289
      @frandanco6289 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, but with glass headlights, the lighting technology was so bad, it was really good, they were not plastic back then.. You get way better technology lighting today than anything on stock vehicles back then.. Yes, there were off road racing driving lights back then with glass lenses, but they could not be used on the street legally..

      It really depends on the type of plastic used. My 16 year old cars headlights still look brand new. I guess it also depends on how much they are exposed to sunlight though.

    • @karollepeto8924
      @karollepeto8924 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not really. Glass headlights can breake if you catch a flying stone from the road. Polycarbonate headligth cover can withstand such impact without damage.

    I restore vintage turntable lids regularly. Some with deep burn marks and heavy scratches. 400, 800, 1000, 1500, 2000, 3000, plastic polish, then a wax...pick one. Surprisingly Pledge is a great finishing stage and buffs to a high gloss mirror finish. The ceramic coat topcoat would replace the wax finish. Depends on your aproach. Money stage is the heavy grit 400, 800. If you rush the first stage you will have poor results. I use hand sanding and polish with a right angle polisher with a white pad.
