I know it sucks to lose a plant, especially a big one like San Juan, but your honesty about the hardships of gardening make me feel that when things don't go right in my own garden, that it's all part of the hobby!

That carrot part had me cracking up 😂🥕 carrot tops are one of my favorite things to eat from my garden!! They are highly nutritious and delicious. You can eat them raw in salads or sauté them. I sautéed them with cabbage last night and they were 👌🏼
Frugal tip: I take the ends or unused parts of the vegetables (carrot ends, onion skins, celery ends, pepper seeds, ends of squash and zucchini) and toss them in a large bag in my freezer. I make a huge pot of vegetable broth with when it’s full.

I love hearing gardeners overseas talk about the critters they have coming through their gardens. We don't have little animals coming through gardens in New Zealand. No racoons, moles, ferrets, foxes, nothing. Just birds and the neighbourhood kitties.

In our little suburban backyard, we have deer, cats, raccoons, squirrels, birds, rats/mice, opposums, birds, foxes, and I even saw a coyote (on the street) once. It's like a mini "Wild Kingdom." 😄🦁

Here in suburban Southern California we have coyotes, raccoons, opossums, rats, gophers, rabbits, feral cats, hawks, owls, snakes, lizards, an occasional salamander, various songbirds, finches, orioles, mockingbirds, and fortunately so far in my neighborhood no squirrels.

Mine bolt when it gets more consistently hot later in the summer. I actually like to plant mine in smaller containers so I can move them to cooler spots in my yard/under trees. I suspect that’s why he’s interplanting his with bush beans to get a bit of shade.
