Ehehe, this video speaks to my soul. 😂 I made a list of all my started series just over a year ago and vowed to spend this year chipping away at it. Almost 60 series, I even made myself a little game of giving myself points for reading sequels, and then I allowed myself to "spend" those points to start new series. One point for reading a sequel, starting a new series then cost five points. It didn't really help, but I've had lots of fun fiddling with the spreadsheet this year. 😋
I really should do this, I have this annoying habit of finishing a first book in a series and jumping onto another first book of ANOTHER series without even considering finishing the series 😭tbf when I love a first book, I binge the series immediately after finishing it so it Also depends on the book
the benefit of not being caught up on new books: I don't have any unread series! it's partly intentional though because I love a good series binge and my memory is terrible so if I wait too long I end up having to reread books to continue
That's how my husband is - so I only get him books that are mostly completed (with the exception of Brandon Sanderson because he churns out books so dang fast). I'm the complete opposite. I'll start first books as soon as they are released and then never pick up sequels LOL
This video triggered me to make a spreadsheet of the series that I need to catch up on. I used my goodreads' challenges to make the list. I went back to 2015. I have 70 series that I need to catch up for a total of 155 books. This video has also help me come up with a goal for 2022. 2022 is going to be a year that I try to finish as many series as I can, and also to decide what series I am not going to continue with. 2022 is going to be an interesting year.

I went through my Goodreads shelves a few months ago and made shelves to sort series (series-any books in a series that arent the most recent I've read, series abandoned, series caught up, series completed, and series in progress). I've been on Goodreads 12 years and read over 1,200 books. 73% of my read books have been a part of a series. I've completed 104 series I've abandoned 213 series I'm caught up on 32 series I'm in progress on 32 series I was really aggressive on the series I've marked abandoned, so some I might one day resume. I've been making an effort to complete more series this year and managed to complete 12 so far. Over half of the series I start, I abandon before finishing.
Great video!! Also wanted to point out that Mistborn has 2 eras : era 1 "The Mistborn trilogy" and era 2 "The Wax and Wayne series" which i think takes place 200 years after the Mistborn trilogy.
I knew someone would have said this. Agree count it as a trilogy Gav - it's like the edge chronicles but with 100's of years in between each era. So that's only 2 books you need to count as unlike edge chronicles it feels concluded after Hero of Ages.
I'm luckily only in the middle of a couple of series: The Darkest Minds, The Wrath & the Dawn duology, The Inheritance Games, The Ravenspire series and The Wheel of Time. Even though the Wheel of Time is huge, that's still a long way from 198 books, I don't know how you're handling that. I've also read the first book of Crescent city, but the second one is not out yet.

Yes How to train your Dragon! Such a fun series really took off for me in book 3, with each book the world expands. The characters are lots of fun it is NOT like the movie, if you expect tje movie cjaracters and plotline you will be disappointed. The books are like a more gitty itv tv show and the movie is the US Hollywood blockbuster version where toothless is an enormous Dragon Hiccup learns to fly. In the books toothless is tiny and sulky and is amazing! Love the friendship combo of our three hero's (present from bk 4 onwards). How to train your Gavin meets how to train your Dragon vlog would be amazing...Will have to hurry with reading as I am on book 6!
Alloy of law/Shadows of self are the second era of mistborn set years into the future, they're called Wax and Wayne (on a planet with no moon) and the fourth book has just been announced for nov 15th 2022
A Place Called Perfect's covers are gorgeous! I'm add them books to my tbr just on that. It's actually so surprising just how many middle grade series there are. I feel like there were hardly any when we (me and you) were kids. I don't remember reading such a range of books. OMG the worst witch!! I loved that show too. Those Earthsea books are BEAUTIFUL! Okay so the Mistborn "series" is technically three trilogies. But for the one you're on now, there's only two more books left in that trilogy: Well of Ascension and Hero of Ages. The second trilogy has like a 200 year time jump. And the third thrilogy is still only planned.
I love Winterhouse! Finally got to the second this year, so I'm hoping to read the third before the end of this winter. I'm the worst at finishing series. It takes me so many years, even when I have them all lol Some of the ones you mentioned here I have and didn't even realize they were series. I'm doomed XD
It seems like it's pretty common in booktube to start a book series but then not finishing it :D I at very good at starting new series but not continuing them, even if I've liked the first book. So interesting (and relatable) video! :)
Fear Street is completely complex when trying to collect since you have books that are sorta like stand alone stories, then you have a multitude of side series, and then you have the main series which is about the main Fear family (and even that has different series within it). My favorite fear street books were Fear Street Seniors I was able to snag about 7 of them before they shot up in price. I'm now missing 1 book and outside of buying the entire series again it hasn't been easy to find.
I have a two page spread in my bullet journal of all series that I have started and not finished or have the first book if and need to read to see if I want to continue, and if I do continue how many books are in it so far. Gavin, you must continue with the Daevabad trilogy, I am reading the third book this month and am so far enjoying it. If you want to dip your toes into adult Sci-Fi you have to try the Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells, they are mostly novellas except for the fifth book and the seventh book comes out in the summer of 2022. You will not be disappointed, I have read three out of the seven, it is fun.
Actually its best if you read The Unmapped Kingdom books in order because there is a character all grown up from book two in book three. 😀 I am buddy reading the How to Train Your Dragon series next year with a friend doing one a month!
I just read Greenglass House and want to read the rest in the series, too! I need to catch up on Lockwood & Co., The Wizards of Once, Murderbot, and Theodora Goss's monstrous ladies series (name??), and I really should finish His Dark Materials...only about 25 years after reading The Golden Compass... 😬
oh lordy gav that is a hecking load of books. since i started the rule of when i finish a book in series I read the next one in the following month and it seems to be working i have finished the six of crows duology and this month read the first book in the king of scars duology. i've just finished mistletoe and murder so well away on that series. as for lockwood an co there is a 1.5 book i don't know if it is in physical form but most certainly is available on kindle and this series gets better and better i just read the hollow boy. then i have alot of series that I have not started so now I have added a rule that i can only buy the next in series once i read the previous. you got this gav xxx

I'm too scared to do this! I have a lot of started Romance series that I have lost track of though there are also a lot that I have abandoned but only because I had put myself on targets to not buy books and to continue the series I would have needed to buy them! I might see if I can set up a spreadsheet over the Christmas holiday so I have half a chance of doing this video as I do want to do it.
My goal was to finish 10 series this year...and I did and some...but then started a ton too. So I started the year in the middle of 52 and ended in the middle of 53 *awkward smile*
So for the mistborn series. The frist one is era one which is The final empire and such. Then there is era 2 which contains 3 but going to be 4 books soon. Then eventually he's going to bring out era 3. Each era is in the future.
I make a negotiation with myself about series. I did a list of all the series I started and need to finish. If I finish one of this list, I can pick a new one. BUT I have to read this new series in a year or two, so I can keep the the story fresh in my mind and enjoy the books more. There are exceptions of course. If a new release is a first in a series, I can read it without finishing one of the list. I just have to keep up to date. Until now, the thing is going very ok.
I never reread a book in a series in order to continue it. I make do with whatever summaries I can find online. Otherwise I know I'll never get back to the series.
I had 54 series last year that I'd started in 2020 or in a previous year, that I wasn't caught up on. I'm scared to see how many it is this year, because a) I haven't continued all of those series yet, and b) I've read from 277 series this year (though some of those are counted twice for series, and world.) Good luck! And as for the Mistborn series, they're all set on the same world, but follow different eras, with the Second Era of Wax and Wayne wrapping up next year with The Los Metal, which I'm so excited for! But you don't have to count era 2 as the same series as era 1, if that makes it easier 😁
I finished the Cam Jansen series this year; short mysteries for kids, many of which are actually pretty good mysteries, and loved the relationship between Cam and her BFF Eric. I am pausing my Nancy Drew read after 26; they are becoming too repetitive and even the delightful antics of George and Bess are not enough to keep me going. I should be able to finish Animorphs by the end of the year; terrific series and I'll miss it. I need to read #3 of Winternight to finish that series, which I plan to do this winter. Finished the Ivy and Bean series -- 12 short books -- I miss those guys! Finished the Joey Pigza series -- 5 books -- which I loved. Theodore Boone is an excellent middle grade series -- 7 books -- for all you Grisham fans; I loved it and may re-read. The Sunny graphic series for middle grade by Holm & Holm is wonderful; 4 books so far and I hope they keep going. I am up-to-date on the Wimpy Kid series, which I love -- 16 so far. Read all 3 books of The Overthrow (Bloom/Hatch/Thrive) by Oppel; middle grade sci fi/ horror; very good. For 2022, I want to at least make a dent in the Ranger's Apprentice (11 books) and Children of the Red King (8 books). Whew -- def my longest comment on any video ever.
This might be an unpopular opinion but I wish more authors would stop doing so many series. Not every story needs three books. Recently if found myself not even picking up a book if I find out it is part of a series. I really want to see more stand alone. Or even series that the individual novels could be read alone would be nice.
I am also guilty of starting a series and just not finishing it lol. (Still doesn't stop me from buying/starting new series though...) I did a video last year about it and apparently it was over 30 series? No idea what I'm at now though. I swear I like finishing series! I'm just easily distracted lol

If you count the novellas in the Kingkiller Chronicle you missed one (a pretty short one that isn't my personal fave). You missed The Lightning Tree. But I don't know where you can get that one separately. Someone else sent me an epub of that one. I have no qualms sending it to you, if you want it. You also missed the cytoverse novellas (part of the Skyward series). I don't plan on reading that series, but I've seen some of the reviews and at least one of them recommended you read the novellas first (before Cytonic) if you like the crew dynamics of book one a lot and continue because of that. If you read the books for Spensa you can just read Cytonic as it deals a lot with Spensa's inner world. What I gleaned is that she goes into Neverwhere, which is basically a place where you get the life you want the most. I didn't really watch on after that because I wanted to know if I'd find it worth it to try and get into the series and I drew the conclusion it wasn't for me. If you want to check out that specific review it's on the channel: Jessiethesleepykoalareads (I think she put all the words there without spaces in between, but I'm not entirely sure).
My series counter is on 16 series I'm not up to date on and want to continue at the moment. But I did make an effort to either binge or continue/finish series this year and I have a lot of series I want to read. Some are higher on my TBR than others. I'm happy I made an easy to keep/check list earlier. I could just look at it now. I'm actually kinda surprised my number of started series I'm not caught up on isn't higher.
Mistborn is a series of series in the wider Cosmere. Era 1 is a trilogy with a more classical fantasy setting (and a short and novella called *The Eleventh Metal* and *Mistborn: Secret History* respectively. The latter should definitely not be read before The Hero of Ages because of spoilers. Era 2 is a quartet with a western setting (last book releases fall 2022) and another short. The shorts are linked to the Mistborn adventure games and especially the second one is only worth it if you get the annotations as well. Era 3 is a planned trilogy with a modern day like setting and female programmer as a lead. It'll likely be published in relatively quickly succession in the years after book 5 in the Stormlight Archive is published. Era 4 will be space opera with Hoid as an MC. You won't really know about Hoid yet but I have a feeling this one is going to be intriguing. The only thing that bothers me is that Mistborn is the stuff that'll connect the Cosmere on a wider scale and it's my least fave in that universe. I don't really like allomancy as a magic system. Era 1 doesn't have the best characters and writing and so far it's too predictable for my liking. In the first trilogy I had 0 surprises at the ending. I didn't guess all of it precisely but I did guess half of it and it was the half that's supposed to have a massive emotional impact. And I guessed it about 1/6 of the way through The Well of Ascension. Plus it has that pesky trope Sanderson uses too often. It appears first at the end of Well of Ascension and I didn't like it the first time I read it and I still don't like it. But he uses it again in era 2. Spoiler: The trope is fake death and it appears in Stormlight too at some point, modified in Elantris, kinda in White Sand, and possibly in Warbreaker (I've got a feeling it's in there but I can't put my finger on where exactly).
Good luck with reading all those books! Way too many haha. I'm not reading a lot of series, because I try not to start too many, especially the ones that aren't finished yet. I think I'm at 15/20 series. I only have 1 that I really need to continue with, but that's going to be a reread.
The fact that you posted this after I just went through and did much the same thing for my 2022 reading journal set up LOL Altho I focused primarily on series where I owned unread sequels for unfinished series, or where I owned a full finished series and hadn't yet finished it, as a priority. Nearly all my book box books are first in a series and the list was going to get way too enormous if I kept going lol But I have so many unread books om my shelves that I wanted to prioritise my physical tbr. But yeh. Good to not feel alone 😅

Im also terrible at finishing series, to the point where I hesitate to start new ones (specially when they are long or with entries yet to be published) because I know it will take me forever to complete them. Edit: Why not look for a summary online of books you think you might need to reread?
I’m terrible at finishing series! I have so many where I read the first one but then just forget about it by the time the next book comes out. This happened with the Ember in the Ashes series and the Bone Season. I still need to read Ruin And Rising too, I said I wanted to read the books before watching the tv show and then I did neither.
Lol, I’m the complete opposite. The only series I’m in the middle of are the main two I’m finishing this month (Grishaverse, and one of Jenny Colgans series’) and the ones I’m not planning to continue cause they were bad.

My goal was to finish 10 series this year...and I did and some...but then started a ton too. So I started the year in the middle of 52 and ended in the middle of 53 *awkward smile*

So for the mistborn series. The frist one is era one which is The final empire and such. Then there is era 2 which contains 3 but going to be 4 books soon. Then eventually he's going to bring out era 3. Each era is in the future.

I make a negotiation with myself about series. I did a list of all the series I started and need to finish. If I finish one of this list, I can pick a new one.
BUT I have to read this new series in a year or two, so I can keep the the story fresh in my mind and enjoy the books more.
There are exceptions of course. If a new release is a first in a series, I can read it without finishing one of the list. I just have to keep up to date.
Until now, the thing is going very ok.

i felt this on a personal level. the obvious solution would be to read more standalone, but no - i shall not make things easy for myself.
I never reread a book in a series in order to continue it. I make do with whatever summaries I can find online. Otherwise I know I'll never get back to the series.
I had 54 series last year that I'd started in 2020 or in a previous year, that I wasn't caught up on. I'm scared to see how many it is this year, because a) I haven't continued all of those series yet, and b) I've read from 277 series this year (though some of those are counted twice for series, and world.) Good luck! And as for the Mistborn series, they're all set on the same world, but follow different eras, with the Second Era of Wax and Wayne wrapping up next year with The Los Metal, which I'm so excited for! But you don't have to count era 2 as the same series as era 1, if that makes it easier 😁
I finished the Cam Jansen series this year; short mysteries for kids, many of which are actually pretty good mysteries, and loved the relationship between Cam and her BFF Eric. I am pausing my Nancy Drew read after 26; they are becoming too repetitive and even the delightful antics of George and Bess are not enough to keep me going. I should be able to finish Animorphs by the end of the year; terrific series and I'll miss it. I need to read #3 of Winternight to finish that series, which I plan to do this winter. Finished the Ivy and Bean series -- 12 short books -- I miss those guys! Finished the Joey Pigza series -- 5 books -- which I loved. Theodore Boone is an excellent middle grade series -- 7 books -- for all you Grisham fans; I loved it and may re-read. The Sunny graphic series for middle grade by Holm & Holm is wonderful; 4 books so far and I hope they keep going. I am up-to-date on the Wimpy Kid series, which I love -- 16 so far. Read all 3 books of The Overthrow (Bloom/Hatch/Thrive) by Oppel; middle grade sci fi/ horror; very good. For 2022, I want to at least make a dent in the Ranger's Apprentice (11 books) and Children of the Red King (8 books). Whew -- def my longest comment on any video ever.

This might be an unpopular opinion but I wish more authors would stop doing so many series. Not every story needs three books. Recently if found myself not even picking up a book if I find out it is part of a series. I really want to see more stand alone. Or even series that the individual novels could be read alone would be nice.

I am also guilty of starting a series and just not finishing it lol. (Still doesn't stop me from buying/starting new series though...) I did a video last year about it and apparently it was over 30 series? No idea what I'm at now though. I swear I like finishing series! I'm just easily distracted lol

If you count the novellas in the Kingkiller Chronicle you missed one (a pretty short one that isn't my personal fave). You missed The Lightning Tree. But I don't know where you can get that one separately. Someone else sent me an epub of that one. I have no qualms sending it to you, if you want it.
You also missed the cytoverse novellas (part of the Skyward series). I don't plan on reading that series, but I've seen some of the reviews and at least one of them recommended you read the novellas first (before Cytonic) if you like the crew dynamics of book one a lot and continue because of that. If you read the books for Spensa you can just read Cytonic as it deals a lot with Spensa's inner world. What I gleaned is that she goes into Neverwhere, which is basically a place where you get the life you want the most. I didn't really watch on after that because I wanted to know if I'd find it worth it to try and get into the series and I drew the conclusion it wasn't for me. If you want to check out that specific review it's on the channel: Jessiethesleepykoalareads (I think she put all the words there without spaces in between, but I'm not entirely sure).
My series counter is on 16 series I'm not up to date on and want to continue at the moment. But I did make an effort to either binge or continue/finish series this year and I have a lot of series I want to read. Some are higher on my TBR than others.
I'm happy I made an easy to keep/check list earlier. I could just look at it now. I'm actually kinda surprised my number of started series I'm not caught up on isn't higher.
Mistborn is a series of series in the wider Cosmere.
Era 1 is a trilogy with a more classical fantasy setting (and a short and novella called *The Eleventh Metal* and *Mistborn: Secret History* respectively. The latter should definitely not be read before The Hero of Ages because of spoilers.
Era 2 is a quartet with a western setting (last book releases fall 2022) and another short.
The shorts are linked to the Mistborn adventure games and especially the second one is only worth it if you get the annotations as well.
Era 3 is a planned trilogy with a modern day like setting and female programmer as a lead. It'll likely be published in relatively quickly succession in the years after book 5 in the Stormlight Archive is published.
Era 4 will be space opera with Hoid as an MC. You won't really know about Hoid yet but I have a feeling this one is going to be intriguing.
The only thing that bothers me is that Mistborn is the stuff that'll connect the Cosmere on a wider scale and it's my least fave in that universe. I don't really like allomancy as a magic system. Era 1 doesn't have the best characters and writing and so far it's too predictable for my liking. In the first trilogy I had 0 surprises at the ending. I didn't guess all of it precisely but I did guess half of it and it was the half that's supposed to have a massive emotional impact. And I guessed it about 1/6 of the way through The Well of Ascension.
Plus it has that pesky trope Sanderson uses too often. It appears first at the end of Well of Ascension and I didn't like it the first time I read it and I still don't like it. But he uses it again in era 2.
Spoiler:
The trope is fake death and it appears in Stormlight too at some point, modified in Elantris, kinda in White Sand, and possibly in Warbreaker (I've got a feeling it's in there but I can't put my finger on where exactly).

I'm not reading a lot of series, because I try not to start too many, especially the ones that aren't finished yet. I think I'm at 15/20 series. I only have 1 that I really need to continue with, but that's going to be a reread.

Altho I focused primarily on series where I owned unread sequels for unfinished series, or where I owned a full finished series and hadn't yet finished it, as a priority. Nearly all my book box books are first in a series and the list was going to get way too enormous if I kept going lol
But I have so many unread books om my shelves that I wanted to prioritise my physical tbr.
But yeh. Good to not feel alone 😅

Im also terrible at finishing series, to the point where I hesitate to start new ones (specially when they are long or with entries yet to be published) because I know it will take me forever to complete them.

I’m terrible at finishing series! I have so many where I read the first one but then just forget about it by the time the next book comes out. This happened with the Ember in the Ashes series and the Bone Season. I still need to read Ruin And Rising too, I said I wanted to read the books before watching the tv show and then I did neither.
All of my irl friends are series bingers, so i always feel like i'm terrible at finishing series. I don't feel like that anymore.
I read The Land of Roar yesterday actually and excited to read the next one. Greenglass House is on my TBR for this winter 😀

Lol, I’m the complete opposite. The only series I’m in the middle of are the main two I’m finishing this month (Grishaverse, and one of Jenny Colgans series’) and the ones I’m not planning to continue cause they were bad.
