Perhaps they should market this device as the “weight loss” version. The portions are tiny and you work so hard for them that it’s probably calorie neutral.
I think even if you use the microwave (I’m not all the way through the video yet), a standard mandolin is the way to go - even a box grater with a slicing side might suffice. Edit: it would also cut down on the cutting time even though the recipe involved additional steps.
I mean, the homemade chips would take you up to 15 minutes to play around with before their done. And let's face it, you will only get about 10 slices or so at a time. But if you get a few of the gadgets, you can prob get up to 5-10 times the amount you'd get from the normal way. Really, just use the recipe AND the device. Gives you better chips and cuts the time from 10-15 to 3-5.
Sp3cial1st i agree with this too, except then it becomes a question of if you want to spend - $5? $10? $15 (I missed how much he said it cost) for a handful or two of homemade potato chips. I think for the number of times you’d actually want to put in the effort to make them, a mandolin and a DIY version of the device along with the recipe (which is just rinsing + oil & salt right?) would be best. Maybe take a cheapo plastic storage container for $2 (or whatever else) and cut a bunch of holes in it to allow the airflow to the slices and proceed as per the instructions.
I didn't know you could make chips in your microwave until I watched this video.. Just tried it tonight and it worked but it's so slow. Maybe I just eat too many chips, but this isn't gonna work for me lol
Definitely go over oven baked, make large batches, then while you eat one batch, you bake the next. If you have a cooling rack that is oven safe you can put em on top of that while baking to avoid the need to flip.
@@Zadamanim Ah, now the fries make more sense, lol. I of course knew of the slang version ("I'll be back in a jiffy"), but didn't think to link the slang word and not the brand with the fries, lol! Brain not working right today.
Hey James first of all my family loves the reviews we always learn something keep it up! I wanted to add something to your recent review that you did on the Joie 44000 Healthy Microwave Potato Chip Maker. The name of it is precisely what I want to highlight which is HEALTHY! We own this and the whole point of it for us, was we could make potato chips without adding any oil to the potato. You did not discuss this on your review your focus was rather on the consistency of the potato slices which granted is not always even. I would not say were lazy for using ours the point was to make potato chips without using any oil/Fat. To make potato chips healthier! Thanks again for your work, just felt like we needed to share.
I really like that it is all in one and comes with the mandoline to slice. I have made them on a regular plate hand cut and they came out good. Havent made em in a while.
I LOVE your reviews. I think that most folks are discounting the HEALTH aspects of home made. You can season them to your tastes and the cost is way less and healthier for you. Please more reviews on chip makers👌
Totally going to try that recipe for me and mom. Curious how well it'll come out for me, and I do kind of like the thicker style chips. Great review as always!
A tip for using any mandoline slicer. When they say to cut a flat and attach the guard, you're supposed to attach the guard to the cut end. For some reason, lots of people get that backwards, and thus stop using the guard and cut the tips of their fingers off.
I used to make these in the 90s with a circle that was 3x bigger than the one you have. I would hand cut them. They reminded me of the dehydrated potato chips you find in boxed scalloped potatoes.
I use my NutriSlicer that you reviewed in 2018 to slice my potatoes. I know you had trouble with it staying connected to the counter, but I always wipe it clean and wipe the counter clean before I use it, and I don't have any problem. It slices the potatoes perfectly for chips.
Really appreciate the usual thorough review comparison and honest I have commentary. Always enjoy the Camino of your "kids" of course !!!😂 Love the outtakes !!!
Could you do a review of the chirp wheel? My girlfriend bought one and she says it helps with back pain but I refuse to believe anything like that could replace a chiropractor visit.
I think the main advantage to at least this product and making it at home is for people that might want a healthier chip. I am not in that camp but I can understand it.
I have a nice slicer so wouldn't need theirs, and since you made the second batch on paper towels on a plate, I wouldn't need that device at all. I never tried to make home made chips, but now I think I'll try it.
I bought the joie a few years back and used it maybe twice. I burned the chips both times (which is why I haven’t really used it again since), but it seems that’s just the nature of making them in the microwave. I actually prefer thinner chips, so the mandolin cutting them super thinly didn’t bother me. The worst parts are the safety guard (like you, I found it difficult to hold on to and at one point nearly cut my finger trying to hold on to it), the bowl not having any non-slip grips on the bottom, and the lid not locking on. And, as useless as it was, I misplaced the safety grip because there was no way to attach or store it.
You could technically stand up the chips by folding the paper towels in a way to compress the chips together with some gap in them, when doing the recipe to fit a lot more chips. Maybe something akin to paper origami (in a FAN shape) can be used to sit the chips on it.
This video inspired me to dig out my microwave bacon maker thingy that I never use. I loaded it with 2 medium sized sliced potatoes. And lo and behold it worked. No salt needed either. Thanks for this friggin review because it inspired me to try my gadget that I already had. What a money saver too. I mean, 10-20 cents per potato vs $3.99+ for a bag of chips. BTW my gadget has no name markings except for the following: Patent #4,933,528 Manufactured under license by Emson UPDATE: My product is apparently called the Emson Bacon Wave. It actually cooks bacon well too. We just don't eat that much bacon to remember to pull it out and use it.
I honestly didn't think the second longer recipe was even gonna work cause they were laying flat but I was surprised. Like when your boy "drops" by to give his opinion. Never made homemade potatoes chips but I make homemade tortilla chips all the time. Everyone loves them more than store bought.
Same here, it seems the blade isn't nearly sharp enough and that is why he is having to push so hard to make the slices. I can already see someone cutting themselves with this thing so I will definitely not be purchasing this product.
Seems about par for the course for a Joie product. They're local to the part of Canada where I was born and raised. They make a whole lot of different kitchen gadgets that you can find at Walmart and most grocery stores. Some of them are amazing, and some of them are just okay. You could have an absolute field day testing a _bunch_ of their products if you felt like it. I like their Roundy Egg Ring. It's just a simple silicone ring that helps you make more uniformly shaped fried eggs.
I wonder if you could combine the two period slice them by hand a little thicker or use a different slicer and then use the little round device to hold them vertically I suspect they might cook better being vertical in that holder
I mean they basically gave you a mandolin and a spreader for the chips, and mandolin is used pretty often for home cooks while making these in a micro wave is fine, but if you want to make a large batch it would be hard to do in a microwave.
U need to make the initial cut at an angle It will make the slicing job easy as simple mechanics with the angle slicing will give horizontal and vertical force making it easy
I have made microwave chips many times. I use a mandolin slicer and lay the potatoes out flat on parchment paper. I do not use any oil and it works fine. I have never tried to wash the starch not sure if that helps. Cooking time depends on how much moisture is on the potatoes some are as short as 3 mins others up to about 6. Another video on this I watched said adding the oil increases cook time as well. Season to taste I like a garlic salt and pepper blend myself.
A good adjustable mandolin (Food Slicer) and a hot pot of Oil works even better than either the product or the recipe. You can use any good frying oil, and then Slice, soak in Water W/ Lemon Juice, then dry & fry. Season and then eat & Enjoy.
I make mine in the oven using a mandolin to slice, paint with olive oil, season and bake at 350 F degrees for 15 minutes. If you want sea salt and vinegar, soak the raw sliced chips in vinegar for about 5 minutes and then sprinkle with sea salt and bake.
Fyi tip you might try a food processor blade slicer for more uniform chips and is quicker cutting of potatoes and works great with skinned potatoes. Once sliced try microwave at 3 min 30-45 sec should work better
I have a foolproof way... it's never failed.... I use a handheld mandolin which has 3 depths and I use the thinness depth (#1 on my mandolin). I use Red Potatoes and they slice easier and fit the mandolin better as well as I don't soak in water. I slice the potato, then spray a microwave safe platter with non stick cooking spray, lay the slices directly on the platter (no paper towel), then put seasonings if desired. then place in the microwave for about 4 minutes to 4 minutes 45 seconds (just watch them when it gets closer to the 4 minute 15 second stage).... the slices will start to turn a little golden color (not brown like the ones in the video) and I do NOT flip them during cooking.... after the time is up, take them out, put them on your regular plate or paper plate (whatever you're using to eat them from LOL) and begin the second batch. I can usually get about 20 chips per platter... They always come out perfect. Sometimes I like to put a little black pepper and onion powder on them, but the spice choices are endless. Super easy. Just a side note... we had a steakhouse around here that made their own chips and I would always ask them to cook them slightly underdone as I like a little chew (not chewy, just kind of a little soft), but not super crispy... they taste SO good with their ranch dressing. So occasionally I like to make these that same way, I just pull them out of the microwave a little sooner. YUM! Great review!
I've done this in a superior lazier way . I just used a potato peeler to slice the potatoes, drenched them in oil and microwaved on a ceramic plate. I wonder how it would work with one of those microwave ready baking potatoes or fried up in that red microwave grill plate thing.
Great video but no way would I by this. Not that the chip cooker didn't work but that slicer looked really dangerous. The fact one you have to press so hard and two that the top didn't lock and you had to hold it it's a no go.
The microwave does a surprisingly good job, it's a bit time consuming but it makes great crispy potato chips which is something that I didn't expect at all.
I think the value of this seems to be in the cooking rack.I'd be interested in seeing if I could make a cheap version of that somehow. Regarding the slicer, they're hard to really get the hang of sometimes, and when they come out as they did for you, it's because you're lifting slightly at the end of your pass. Not by much, but when the slices are that thin, not that much makes the difference!
James. slice. soak in water with tea spoon of baking soda to become crispier before burning. brush with oil and add salt to taste. cant tell time cuz its according to microwave power and amount of chips. bteer use an air fryer.
It's much easier to use a potato/carrot peeler for slicing potatoes for home made crisps. You just dash down multiple times and voila! Mind you, the peeler is not really broad enough for larger potatoes. i found that when making home made crisps it is the thickness consistency that matters most: in a given batch, thicker ones might come out raw and the ones too fine get burnt
My new favorite quote: "I chose this one because it was the only one not to catch fire."
i mean... as criteria goes, i can't argue with it.
Its a solid selling point

It's much easier to use a potato/carrot peeler for slicing potatoes for home made crisps. You just dash down multiple times and voila! Mind you, the peeler is not really broad enough for larger potatoes.
i found that when making home made crisps it is the thickness consistency that matters most: in a given batch, thicker ones might come out raw and the ones too fine get burnt
