I see from the comments that the obvious solution to cleaning the bags would have been to turn them inside out. Yep, I missed that! The cleaning part was an afterthought and I should have tried that. Thank you for pointing that out!

Arent they just too tight to turn them inside out? Also, would they be strong enough on the side parts to not get ripped apart?

    • @maireadnic8280
      @maireadnic8280 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

I posted a few tips in a separate post, and personally I wouldn’t turn them inside out as the seam can get quite delicate and can/will tear.
Allowing them to cool them down and the cheese does come out really easily.

The bag holder is particularly good for transferring cereal into gallon sized bags. We also use ours when making Chex Mix at the holidays; it's super easy to dump it from the casserole pan into ziplocs for gifting.

Actually, I live I florida, hurricane central. Lots of people, myself included, fill gallon freezer bags with water and freeze them when prepping for a storm. They serve as ice packs (I've been without power for days) and as they melt as fresh drinking water.
I know you were only joking but it sure would be easier with one of those

I’ve been using toaster bags for years, (unbuttered) so I have a few tips.
1- I find it’s always best to do two rounds on low, especially if you’re using cheddar which doesn’t melt as quickly as mozzarella or Gouda. It stops the bread from burning as much too.
2- It’s easier to remove the cheese when the cheese is cold and you just pick it out.
3- while they last longer when hand-washed, but they do go in the dishwasher. Just open them up and spread the opening across a few tines. I find it handy to weigh it down with a saucepan lid or tongs, especially on the low rack.
3: guess what I use to dry them out after washing. Yes, that very same bag prop! I raise the arms to hold washed bags (including plastic food bags) open upside down to dry!

The bag holder is a great product. I leave one on the stove to put eggshells etc in and the other to help fill zip lock bags. You can use virtually any plastic bag in them, bread bags and so on.

My mom actually bought one of those bag holders a few years ago. It's been great, especially for separating food into different bags, or for storing food in bags to store in the fridge. Although it's cheap, it really is a great product. Also, the arms fold down to store flat in a drawer and save space.

That total rack is honestly a really good thing to have. I reckon the bag holder doesnt need a suction cup because the weight of whatever you're pouring into the bag rests directly on the base and helps to hold it down.

  • @jacayz
    @jacayz 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I just want to say I agree with James' review of the Bag Holder. After seeing this review, I purchased a 3-pack of similar ones (this had arms that folded flat).
My use case is taking 7# bags of ice out of their store bag and putting the ice into two 1 gallon zip-to-close bags to store in my home freezer. Prior to purchase, I would break up the store bag, with a meat tenderizer, open it, reach inside, pull out some ice, and put it into the baggie, repeat until full. Repeat for the second bag. Long & often messy.
But, better than storing the much taller store bag with a bag clamp or something else.
I now put a gallon bag in the bag holder, break up the store bag the same way as before, cut the top of the store bag off, and literally pour the ice from the store bag into the baggie. When the first one is full, I pop it out of the holder, put the second one in, and fill it up. Two 1 gallon bags is perfect for 7# of ice.
Done in about 1 minute, and typically only a few cubes spill out.
I couldn't be happier! Thanks James!

Personally, I was thinking that wouldn't most dishwashers have racks that could be used? Depends on the dishwasher, but a lot of them have to have some design on the rack(s) that would enable you to place them in an open fashion that would let water inside it. Though I wonder about the water pressure possibly dislodging it. Maybe clothespins to hold them in place or something?

I have one of those non-expandable kitchen racks. With just a one basin sink, it works great as a drying rack so as to cover half the sink with drying dishes while leaving the other half open to wash them in. Also saves counter space since the rack covers half the sink instead of half the counter.

buttered cheese sandwich: put the sandwich on a spatula to insert it into the bag. And to put it into the dishwasher, just place it over a glass. Top rack. I've been cooking forever. The rabbit ear bag holders do work pretty well. However I could see my self giving up on the toaster bags , it's just easier to clean a griddle pan or a skillet than get into the bag and get the gooey stuff out. But first before I totally just tossed them away or stored them in a drawer someplace., I'd probably try to use them as furniture sliders or maybe some type of non stick drawer glides they look fairly slippery..

When I was a kid in the 50/60s, our grilled cheese sandwiches were open faced sandwiches. One side was buttered, cheese slice, slice of tomato, cooked bacon put between the cheese and tomato. Placed on a cooling rack placed on cookie sheet. Haven’t had sandwiches that way in years. That green bag holder is great for filling freezer bags with soups and sauces

I know what you mean about having to clean something one way or the other, as you mentioned with the bags v. the griddle. This type of dilemma is the reason why I don't use spoon rests. Sure, you can dunk the spoonrest under water and throw it in the dishwasher to clean it, but, you gotta clean the stove or counters off anyway after cooking, and so a quick little dab with my dishes brush on the mess from the spoonrest, and everting comes off easy peasy. It's the minimalist, easy route. That's why I like shows like yours, because you help us to figure out what works and what doesn't work, what the best choices are, so we can live our best lives. Thank you.

@@xmikeox If it's a flexible bag, it can be pulled inside out just as a sock can be pulled inside out. It is the bag we're talking about not the grilled cheese sandwich. Back as University students, we prided ourselves in being able to turn styrofoam coffee cups inside out. Those bags are more than flexible enough to be turned inside out.

I really love toaster bags, they are a really easy way to make a toasted sandwich. Although it does take a little trial and error before you get the right heat setting on the toaster.

My hubby makes huge batches of soup every autumn/winter but it usually falls on me to pour the cooled soup into quart and gallon zip lock bags and it gets danged messy! Tried using binder clips to clip the bags inside a plastic cereal container but that only worked for the gallon bags. These bag holders could be a huge help at soup making time. 🙂 Thanks for the review!

When I saw the Total Rack sliding mechanism this is the same thought I had - "Great concept... poor execution. After a good dishwashing, the excess rinse water never comes out of the tubes. This can’t be sanitary" The tubes slide into one another so if the smaller tubes have grease or get wet inside the larger tube it's never going to come out again.

I got one of the baggie holders for a gift years ago, and use it a lot for drying baggies that I wash and reuse. Just wash them, and hang them upside down on the holder, over a dishtowel.

The bag holders are something I resisted getting for nigh on a decade because I typically just grabbed a mixing bowl of appropriate size and used it to hold up the kitchen storage bags. Then we had to move to a less than ideal kitchen after having our first kid, so I relented. I have to say, they are definitely legitimately helpful, especially to someone Iike me who has nerve damage in their arms and hands. Thumbs up, would recommend.
The bags from the first segment of the video just make me miss MicroCrisp toasting paper, to be perfectly honest.

That bag holder.....I NEED that in my life along with that amazing multi-use, multipurpose rack. That is so cool! I’d use all 3 of these products and especially enjoyed this video. Very helpful and practical, as always! Thank you for all your hard work and another fantastic, informative and useful review!!! Happy Holidays!!

Thanks for the reviews. The toaster bags remind me of when I used to wrap bread and cheese in tin foil and use the clothes iron on it to toast it. We weren't allowed any cooking appliances, except a hot pot, in the college dorm when I was a kid. Can you do a review of Emeril Lagasse's pasta maker? It looks good but I wonder how well it works. Also, Ronco used to make one that looks very similar.

Just put the bottom of a bag in a large measuring cup or plastic container and fold the top over the edge. It not only holds it open, but it's a lot more sturdy than that plastic contraption.

The toaster bags are silicone coated. If they were wax paper they would melt. I love them. I find they work for toaster pancakes ....they warm them but keep them soft. Also, I reheat chicken fingers in them....makes for quick and crunchy chicken. (I LOATHE and no longer own a microwave).
If you brush melted butter on the bread it makes it a smidge easier.
