Brian wrote the song about his turmoil at the time. He fell in love with another woman (an actress Anita Dobson, who became his second wife and till today they are still together). For sometime he felt that his marriage wasn't working but when he met Anita, his wife was pregnant with their third child.
His father was diagnosed with lung cancer and died in June 1987.
Freddie told the band after Knebworth, in August 1986, that he couldn't tour any more and in 1987 he began to show signs of illness. He was diagnosed HIV positive although he didn't tell band members at first (but they knew something wasn't ok).
So from autumn 1986 to 1988 (when Brian and his wife divorced ) times were tough for Brian. He was torn between two loves, he was separated from his children, mourning his father's passing and the odds of losing Freddie and the band were lurking behind the corner.
Brian explained in 2021:
"In a way, this is the most important song I ever wrote.
It was like a therapy session for me. I was just pouring out all these words because I felt like I was trapped. I was in a place I could never, ever get out of. All I could do is to write about it. It was the only song that I wrote in that period of 9 -12 months.
The things that I struggle with are still there. The song is a chronicle of what is buried deepest inside me. Every word I would still stand for. It's exactly how I am inside. It does sum up life's journey for me."
The audience first heard the song performed by Brian at the Freddie Mercury Tribute concert in April 1992, and was released on Brian's debut solo album "Back To The Light" in September 1992.
Freddie took that song to heart and Queen recorded the bigger version in 1989 with Freddie's vocals. It later surfaced on Queen's 1995 "Made in Heaven" album, completed after Freddie's passing... 💔
The boy is Brian and there are also his father and mother. The other boy has to be a friend because Brian was the only child.
