    Other common names for wild field garlic are Crow Garlic and Onion Grass. The underground bulbs start sizing up in late spring and hold well until autumn. Here's a video on how to find and use the flower stalks or scapes that have a short season: th-cam.com/video/L2EVqUVtuRo/w-d-xo.html Here is a different form of the same species (Allium vinale), that most folks call Wild Chives because you use them like chives: th-cam.com/video/7nUirr-bEKM/w-d-xo.html --- You can see the much larger scapes from Elephant Garlic in this video - th-cam.com/video/eRuadb28-vA/w-d-xo.html
    -- Do you like wild field garlic? I'd like to know. Happy foraging!

    • @HaphazardHomestead
      @HaphazardHomestead  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's what makes it so hard to get rid of the Wild Field Garlic in cultivated fields. Every time a tractor goes through, or a rototiller, or even a shovel, those bulblets break off and there's a new plant the next season. Put that with the dozens of little topset bulblets that shatter in the autumn, and there is no end to these little garlics! I appreciate your comment, Richard F, because you point out how anybody can start growing wild field garlic in their own garden, for absolutely free.

    You got big bulbs there, mine are small. Ah, dehydrating the greens, good idea!
    What did I just put in honey? Well the ants found out, with turning the jar, though nothing leaked out and the jar was in a plate.... those tiny ants.... The jar is in a zip lock baggy now 😆

    • @HaphazardHomestead
      @HaphazardHomestead  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Uh-oh! I'm glad you found those ants as soon as you did, kleineroteHex! Good idea with the baggy. I usually use a moat system, with the jar sitting in a bowl of water. But that takes more counter space, lol. I'm glad you had some field garlic so handy like that. I hope you enjoy your results. And I look forward to your taste review, either way. These wild field garlic bulbs seem small compared to domestic garlic and Elephant Garlic, but I'm impressed with how much energy they put into their tall flower stalk. If only they could get that energy into their bulb instead!

    This was a great video! Also, I'm confused with telling apart the different mustard greens. Their flower stalks all look the same, so how should I go about distinguishing (for example) hedge mustard from field mustard? How about some of the other rocket mustards, as well?

    • @HaphazardHomestead
      @HaphazardHomestead  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm glad you enjoyed my wild field garlic bulbs! There are so many different wild mustards, in addition to all the garden mustards that can spread outside of cultivation. Over 500 species in North America! Some are native with a small region where they live, but others are introduced and thrive in so many places. It's one thing to ID them with their flowers, but it is a harder challenge when you want the early season greens, for sure! You've got me thinking about how to help out with identification more, in a way that lets each person get to know the plants in their own area. In the meantime, I"ll get some mustard videos on my list to do. Thanks, Tommy Nolan!

      These are Allium vineale. It has so many different common names, like all the wild alliums do. The A. canadense has flat, solid leaves and is really an onion rather than a garlic. The A. vineale has hollow stems, with little ridges on them. You can see more of these A. vineale stems in some of my wild salad videos, or this one that's about eating the flower stalks before the seedhead opens up: th-cam.com/video/L2EVqUVtuRo/w-d-xo.html
